Thanks smiley ... they're all great too!! Love that quote from Kenny Rogers with your addition lol .... so very true!

I have a friend who just LOVES "I am woman" and always grabs a mic to belt it out, wherever we are lol. The best one was when we were on a boat cruising back from a winery and she got the driver to give her his mic and belted it out to a boatload of people as we all sang and danced along with her .... bloody hilarious!!

Amongst those already listed, gems, gems, gems everywhere....although underated, Aussies have some of the most poignant songs ever crafted. Beautiful pop music, such as (in no particular order):

The Go-Betweens (16 Lover's Lane, 1988) - Could it get anymore beautiful than this album? My god, why is this not overplayed on the radio....every song on the album screams perfection! My pick, 'The Streets of Your Town', but really, I'll take 'em all! That backing vocal and chorus just transport me to another place, every time.

The Waifs (Up All Night, 2003) - You cannot get past the sentimentality and sincerity of this album...not bad at all for a three-piece outfit. The song closest to every Aussie backpacker's heart 'London Still'....

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (The Good Son, 1996) - Not his best album, but by golly, one of the most clever! The 'Ship Song' brings about a terrible longing, and you can almost say, one of the best songs to come out of that fella Nick.

Dirty Three (Dirty Three, 1994) - Listening to Warren Ellis' violin in 'Everything's F u c k e d' (excuse the expletive, theirs not mine) stirs all that chaos that may have formed within you to melt into one beautiful piece, such as this....it really is a love song without the words, never fails to stir the heartstrings, especially on a rainy/ stormy night...then followed up with 'The Last Night' wraps it up very nicely for me.

The Church (Starfish, 1990) - The biggest album seller for this band and why not? Great songs, the instruments and the mixes an almost ethereal quality about it, and that hit 'Under the Milky Way' if only 'The Unguarded Moment' was on the same album, it'd be perfect.

The Howling Bells (The Howling Bells, 2006) - The makings of a modern classic, so very textbook-like. A perfect debut....'Low Happening' and my favourite 'In the Woods'.

Giving away my age here!
Little boy lost.. never knew the name of the singer..
I remember YOu .... Frank Ifield.
Some of the Smokey Dawson songs....come to mind,,, and also some of the music people Chet Atkins, etc who used to tour, with Slim Dusty, going to outback towns where the main people in the audience were the natives (locals, and some stockmen from the stations)
The sheik from Scrubby Creek.
The Pub`s Got NO Beer Slim Dusty . I remember that one especially as Neeralyn Pub was dry...Publican walked out one day, never came back, no bills were paid. Out near Wagain..

And Who can forget ,,,, The redback on the Toilet Seat???/ Having been in one horse towns
where the dunny was way down the backyard of the Pubs,,,, and there was`nt any lights in the yard!! Some country pubs had the best Lemon trees too, right outside the men`s toilets...

those are classics and will be remembered when some of the ones the rest of you are mentioning are gone and forgotten...............

I'd add pretty much anything by Stars or Choir Boys, Evie parts 1, 2, and 3, and "I Remember When I Was Young" by Chain. Mia Dyson hasn't risen to the prominence she deserves yet, but I think she'll get there sometime this decade. I'd add my vote for The Waifs too. I saw them as support act for someone and they were very good. Just goes to show you can do good things without going on Idol!

~Pedro Sanchez~ - I had the thrill of Warren Ellis buying one of my tenor guitars. He never made a big thing of who he was but organised some tickets and passes for the Grinderman/Cave show here in Adelaide last year. True gentleman, musical genius, and looks like a friendly werewolf!

You lucky man (and he with your guitar!)....I've only ever seen Warren from a distance but from where I was me thought the guy was loco! Its true though, the difference between a genius and a madman is but a hair's breadth. I'm a fan!

Were they as good as their album? The Americans love them to bits....a mate had seen them live but he went there cos he thought the girls were hot, lol!

Just to stay on topic, more classic Aussie songs (and albums...sorry am an album rather than a singles man )

The Saints (Stranded, 1976) - Classic album, tremendous historical significance. Even the Sex Pistols acknowledged ‘(I’m) Stranded’ as the first ever punk single. Hey that says plenty coming from Johnny Rotten!
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=64kAK0CZjdk&feature=related

Midnight Oil (Diesel and Dust, 1987; Earth and Sun and Moon, 1993) -I reckon two of the Oils ‘classic’ albums. When I start to wonder about Peter Garrett’s new incarnation as a politician, these two albums put me at ease. A smart thinking band, under the guise of rock and roll. How do we sleep while our beds are burning? And did i hear you say,
my country right or wrong.....

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=QyeTuoWCqUE&feature=related

The Clouds (Penny Century, 1991) - Girls who can play guitar....what more do you need? And girls singing about umm ‘moist vaginas’ and stuff....

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=eDjWz31pSRc&feature=related

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wle6jFjIP4&feature=related

Def FX (Light Speed Collision, 1992) - You can sneer at this band all you like, but that fusion of metal, electronica, rap, industrial music works quite well for me...and Fiona Horne! This band is missed (especially their live shows). Stand out tracks are ‘Surfers of the Mind’ (on the american released Light Speed Collision only), as well as ‘Feels Good’, ‘Space Time Disco’ and ‘Sex Game Sucker’.

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=1lim4eLkXgM&feature=related

The Go-Betweens (16 Lovers Lane, 1988) - Just can’t help going back to this, did I say I love this album? I played it again and again last night...fell asleep with the headphones on! ‘Dive for your Memory’, ‘Quiet Heart’ and ‘Love Goes On’...dammit every single track! A desert island album for me.

Yep! My brother went to school with Chris from the Saints, garage band that blasted out of Brissy & went supersonic when folks thought it wasn't possible.

But then again classic Aussie song -
....but you know, and I know.... Better - Screaming Jets

I love the traditional ones - And the band played Waltzing Matilda always brings a tear.
And the rock!

At the moment listening to the Whitlams - lots of people dont like them but the lyrics hit a spot for me.
