Relocating to Arizona advice

Hello Im in the process of relocating to Arizona and am looking for a nice place to live.
My job will either be located in the Tempe or Gilbert area (south of FWY 60)

Im looking in the Gilbert, Tempe, Mesa,Chandler areas.

Im a single 36 year old man who likes to go out to a sports bar or night club. on the weekends.

From my visit it appears Gilbert is more family based with grocery stores and restaurants but didnt really see any bars or night clubs in the area. Drove around Mesa a little so didnt really get a feel for the area.

Okay, in my opinion only...

Scottsdale -- high-priced, trendy, lots of beautiful people and expensive stores and restaurants. I could never afford to live anywhere near it. Some people won't go out anywhere else. Classy bars, trendy drinks, botox and collagen beauties galore.

Tempe - Mostly college-y, more on the funky side, lots of fun, less-expensive things to do, especially around downtown Mill Avenue. On the minus side, you may feel like the chaperon at a high school dance. Great if you like to date those much younger than yourself. The further away from ASU, the less infested with fraternity-types it is.

Mesa - Lower budget, more religious, some shopping malls, some scarier neighborhoods. A lot of good thrift stores. A giant KMart is out there. I lived there for a while. Had to go elsewhere for fun.

Chandler -- doesn't really have a well-defined personality. Family-oriented mostly; grocery stores, Home Depot, that kind of thing.

Gilbert -- it is a (relatively) newer part of town, so yeah, a lot of car lots, fast food joints and grocery stores. Nice place to live if you're near the freeway.

Thanks UM

yeah, Scottsdale sounds like its similar to Miami or LA and that is not me at all.

So from it seems like there is really no nightlife in the other areas? (except maybe Tempe but more college based)

Where do single 30 somethings meet?

Im coming from Michigan from the suburbs outside Detroit and there are a ton of bars night clubs around here.

Are you looking to buy or rent?
I had an apartment on Gilbert /Baseline for a year.I loved it.It was in The Woodcreek Apartment complex. You can google it to get to their website. It was clean, residents were nice, management was great and the price was very reasonable.Full size washer and dryer in the apartment and a balcony off the livingroom, balcony off the bedroom and a fire place!I think at the time I paid 600.00 a month!
I have a very heavy dislike of The Children Of The Corn,so I personally try to never venture into the east valley.
To each their own though.
Woodcreek was my sanctuary while I was stuck in Mesa.

Downtown Phoenix sounds like where you want to be. Start with Cooperstown and go from there when you start to meet people. Most of the guys get together at the golf courses and decide where to go out. There are some low key places in Chandler but they aren't places to pick up women.

Since you will be working in the East Valley, unless you want to deal with the drive and traffic, you are pretty much stuck around there. Maybe check out central phoenix area near the 51 freeway and see how far it is from your work. The light rail will be running soon, that might help with transportation.

I have always lived in North Phoenix and love it. I even drive downtown to go to work. There is so much to do up here, movie/shopping/eating plazas, all within 10 min to each direction of me.

I used to live in Scottsdale and N Scottsdale, just as someone said earlier..its the real trendy "keepin up with the Jones'" part of town. I am almost 40 and I have no desire to hang with party animal (been there done that in my 20's), so I wont go near Tempe except to work, Mesa is just not really my cup of tea, neither is Phoenix (East, West North or South). I have been in Chandler for the past 4 yrs and I love it here. More family oriented and just far enough away from it all to not get unwanted or uninvited visitors from time to time and just close enough to hang out in all of the more happening places. Gilbert is much of the same as Chandler, just newer and a little smaller. Hope this helps!

Any suggestions regarding what is close to Oro Valley? I am being pressured by family to move there.

Sure wouldn't miss this cold and snow.

Uh, isn't it just a bit north of Tucson? Wasn't planning on moving into Oro Valley, looks mostly like a retirement place, but within a reasonable driving distance to visit would be good. Like a couple of hours or less.

Chandler and Gilbert are the places to be. If you are near the 60 for work, there are plenty of freeways to get home. The san tan area is fairly new and has the loop 202 that just barely opened. Just don't go as far as the city of Queen Creek. It is pretty out here, but close to nothing! We were excited when the walmart opened 2 years ago! Pathetic!!!

I have been in Gilbert 5 years now relocated from Seattle. The best parties here in AZ have been at my friends and neighbor’s back yards. But there are a few nice places in Temp, Mesa and Chandler, check http://www.grahamcentralstationtempe.com/ you will love this place. The ASU bars in downtown Tempe are very nice too. Also I can not stress this enough.. If you’re drinking get a DD or taxi it, the DUI laws here are tough.

Best of luck and welcome to our fine state.

There are bars and sports bars everywhere. Even in Gilbert and Mesa. A lot of them offer off track betting (if you are into that kind of thing) As far as the night club scene in the valley. It sucks even in Scottsdale, overpriced, too crowded and watered down drinks.

Seems most of these places are in the northern areas. Is any of the south tolerable at all? I was just told not to go any further south than Tucson.

Hey liljester,

Imagine if you had the time and the money you'd come down and poke around a bit and check places out for yourself. Southern Arizona is growing so fast. I-10 is like a parking lot from Phoenix to Tucson. Red tile roofs are springing up everywhere. Tucson is booming. Phoenix suburbs now reach to Casa Grande.

Some places you might wish to check out are Vail and Benson SE of Tucson, Tubac south of Tucson. Sierra Vista area is strongly military but that also makes it less rural. Folks from all over the world..

You might wanna check out Safford, East of Tucson...many hot springs and rural.

Really, its so varied you really need to come out and get a feel for it. Tell the family if they want you so badly help out with the expenses of a survey trip.

I have lived in either Mesa, Chandler or Gilbert since 1984. My advice is to rent until you find an area that you like. There are numerous sports bars. Some are even hidden inside cantinas and those are on every corner too. Welcome to AZ and do not drink and drive. You will get caught and you will be sorry!

get a sunday copy of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC or their website: azcentral.com. and look for career builder. -may look like there are lots of jobs, however the valley is quite populated and streatches for miles -you dont want to live in glendale and have to commute to work in mesa or vice versa.
if your thinking of relocating here in maricopa county (phoenix) take into account: jobs dont pay very well, our public schools are rated 49th of 50, dont spit on any sidewalks cuz the sheriff wont be happy until he has everyone incarcerated in a tent, it costs a fortune to register your car, lots of illegals committing violent crimes here. and the air/water isn't really that healthy, -however we do have nice warm weather and Vegas is less than a half days drive away.

Eclipse,
I moved here about 4 years ago from a winter state and I'm not ever going back. Despite the negatives, there are lots of things to do here and I'm staying. You might want to check out meetup.com. I've joined several groups from there and its a great way to really get to know people all over the Valley. Plus there are several singles groups. Good Luck and welcome to Arizona.
