Can you smell a vegetarian?

I was visiting with some friends this morning and the topic of discussion was diets and eating healthy. One woman said she can smell a vegetarian. I asked what she was talking about. She explained and her husband promptly agreed.

As soon as a vegetarian enters the office of their accommodations business they can tell immediately if the customer is vegetarian, for they having a distinct odour, described as herbal and earthy. Similarly when entering a guest cabin they can tell by the smell of the room if the guests are vegetarian.

What are your experiences with identifying a vegetarian by odour? Can one vegetarian identify another, or is it only non-vegetarians that can make that determination?

My friends travel to Asia often and went on to say that whites (Caucasians) are considered to stink by the Chinese, though not by people in Thailand, at least not to their knowledge.

Would this offensive odour of whites be a racial characteristic or perhaps caused by something in the typical western diet?

Have you noticed other patterns of odour specific to people having a particular diet or belonging to a particular race or from a particular part of the world?

Please. In no way would I want this to develop into a derogatory racist thread!

Oh boy this thread has the potential to become very um, racist if you will,....... DIET-wise of course .

Hm what things do I smell when eaters of certain foods enter a room??.not going there.

"Have you noticed other patterns of odour specific to people having a particular diet or belonging to a particular race or from a particular part of the world?"

Absolutely! Through my travels in Cuba I noticed (and confirmed by the locals) that all tourists smell foul. I think it's the diet.
Cubans on the other hand have the most amazing sweet (non-cosmetic), delicious natural scent in their skin and I attribute that to their food which is all locally grown and free of pesticides, organic, etc. etc....and, they eat "in season" produce! nothing imported.

On another note, I noticed that people who eat meat tend to be more aggressive...and the more meat the more aggressive ...ouch! nasty!

Well you know the old saying ,"you are what you eat".I've never noticed a person to have a certain oder or scent in accordance to vegetarianism, but I have noticed it through spices .I guess it only makes sense that what you eat combines with the chemicals in your body and comes through pores .The same is true for taste,as the sweat of one woman will taste different then another. The same is true with ,um,ah,other bodily fluids , and I'm sure most woman will tell you the same about men.

Being able to smell a vegetarian is the hokiest thing I've ever heard. Our family was vegetarian for about 8 years then went back to eating meat 10 years ago. Both my boys have since decided to become vegetarian again, one when he was 14 & the other when he was 22 & they don't smell any different from their carnivorous friends or family members.

I can sometimes spot a vegan, not by smell but because many tend to get quite lean from the lack of dairy in their diets. If heavy meat eaters are more aggressive, it's likely due to all the hormones in the meat (or milk) they're ingesting.

My friends travel to Asia often and went on to say that whites (Caucasians) are considered to stink by the Chinese

Yes, Caucasians have had a reputation for having bad body odour for as long as I can remember. Having grown up in Singapore myself, I can tell you that this is because some Caucasians (both North Americans & Europeans), don't bathe or shower daily, especially during the cold, winter months. Many of the elderly people I know bathe once a week. Even if they sponge their important bits during the week, it still leaves their hair & the rest of their body unwashed until their weekly bath. Most Asians, on the other hand, tend to shower at least twice daily due to the warm climate.

energy08: I agree that bodily fluids taste different according to diet, medication, smoking, etc.

^^^ As far as being a "VAGatarian" ... I see someone has a good memory about those yogurt postings.

I haven't been a vegetarian for about 10 years but I don't eat tons of meat either ... except I do hog out on Tony Roma's Louisiana ribs with California honey bbq sauce ... yum!

Back to body odour ... I looove the smell of babies because they all seem to have a similarly distinct odour about them, not unpleasant ... unless of course there is sour milk or poopy diapers involved.

This may be an uninformed opinion, (OK, a totally uninformed opinion), but doesn't the vegetarian diet include a lot of beans, broccoli, cauliflower and other explosive high-fibre items? I would suspect this would be cause for a certain distinctive smell........

The Foods you eat affect your Body Odour esp. when perspiring. And yes, its true, they can smell it, but never heard of it in Reference to a Vegetarian Diet.

As mentioned previously, Booze, Cigs, Medication also scent BO.

I don't think that you can "smell" a vegetarian. I suspect that possibly this might be more of a lifestyle thing. IE I have friends that are veg that are mainstream and friends that are veg and hippy. My veg and non veg hippy friends all have a smell. And no not because of lack of hygiene or pot for that matter (as some I know never smoke it). I have however often wondered why the scent. I think possibly because of a lot of incense burning. I dunno.

So if you can smell a vegetarian, then you would able to be able to smell a meat eater? If a person can tell what another person eats from their diet, then wouldn't they be smelling the absence of the meat odour?

I eat very little meet, but I am not technically a vegetarian. However, I am always asked if I am. I kind of thought it was because maybe I am a bit pale in the winter, but maybe it is the way I smell.

I personally don't think humans are that good at sizing others up based on scent. Dogs are masters at it.

I think there are other visual clues that vegetarian people give off. Some tend to be natural looking and wear sensible shoes and so on.

Yes, my own. I eat Chocolate, yet smell like Vanilla.

It's very strange.

I think it is possible to have a smell based upon your diet. I mean your diet affects other things like the taste of bodily fluids. I was once told it tasted like a super sour... Oddly.

Then if you go the route of vegan for about 6 months, I heard that your stool sinks instead of floats. Then that other things can also change how badly it stinks.

It actually floats, instead of sinks, because of the increase in fiber.

I get the distinct impression that diet will influence a person's odour, even that of a person who is clean and healthy.

I've heard of people who consume lots of raw garlic that the garlic smell comes out of their pores.

Bingo! Diet and state of health...think Gingivitis! Infected tissues, even though clean, are not yummy... Excessive alcohol consumption changes the quality of the tissues, so do prescription drugs, etc.

Tyeee I have seen the use raw garlic applied topically to treat infections , and it too is absorbed by the body and the aroma come out through the pores! BTW very effective treatment!

I have a friend from high school, who is mostly vegetarian, after years working/living on a farm. She tells me she can definitely tell the
difference, in the way people sweat.

I have been dating/involved with a vegetarian for over 3 years & I have noticed that his sweat isn't as stinky (as most men's). Although
since I didn't know him before he became a vegetarian, it might just be an individual difference.

One thing about smell/scent differences that I have noticed though, is not all smokers stink!!
My 3rd husband was a smoker & Yuck! Yellow hands & teeth & smoker's breath, even after repeated brushings. But my last husband
was also a smoker; but his hands & teeth were not stained & his breath was very pleasant. I also noticed when I briefly dated a smoker
from POF 3 &1/2 years ago, that he also smelled nice. And when I smoked as a teen, my hands & teeth weren't stained, either. I have a
theory on that, perhaps some people are simply more porous/ or more absorbent of certain smells than others.

I think I'm going to start a new tactic. When I see hawt woman I'd like to become acquainted with I'll go up and ask if I can have a sniff to see if I can tell the difference between a vegetarian or meat-eater.

If she agrees I'd nuzzle in close and take in a deep breath or two and tell her that I can't determine anything about her diet, but she smells really, really nice (hopefully she does) and then invite to join for me a drink and talk about it.

Who knows, maybe she'd want to sniff me too. While I eat a lot of fresh produce I confess to being a meat-eater.

Meat eaters are easier to smell. I know I can be outright nasty after eatting a big meaty meal.
