DO WE WATCH TOO MUCH TV ?
Posted: 11/17/2008 7:25:34 AM
Okay not just as title says....do we watch too much TV? like childern are either siting on Computer or watching TV ? Most of adults spend alot of their time watching TV. Now do you believe we watch too much and depend on it too much ?

Like when do you just turn it off and not go to it anymore. When does a book become a much better venue ? What do you think ?

Not here to argue just get some feedback.

When do you just turn it off and not go to it anymore:
1. When you simply MUST watch House MD at 10pm on every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
2. When it takes you three months to watch everything you've recorded on DVR
3. During supper, because the family is talking about the day they had
4. When everything on the news is ugly, mean, and full of nothing but shock value
5. During homework
6. When the radio is on
7. When you're cooking supper with your kids, because the radio is on
8. When you're going to sleep -the TV definitely makes sleep more fitful
9. When you're cleanin up the house -music will help you get it done faster
10. When you calculate in one week how much you could be enjoying the company of your family instead of enjoying the company of Family Guy back to back episodes.

Not saying I don't love some of the shows, but I refuse to plan my life around the tele. If watching tv will prevent anything else in my life from happening, it's not worth it.

I watch too much bad TV. You can never watch too much good TV. There just isn't enough good TV. TV is my surrogate life. Without TV I would be sitting staring blankly at the wall, my pockets bulging with unspent money. The TV gives me emotional experiences and lets me know which products to buy.

I don't watch any TV.

But do I spend wayyyyy too much time in front of this darn computer?

Haha. I'm afraid my computer and I have a codepency relationship. It waits all night for me to turn it on in the morning, only to turn me on (or into a zombie) all day long...a perfect match made in hel...err... I mean heaven.

So that says it all, people will never be off TV? do we take everything TV shows us as fact ? do we accept it as truth ?

Sure it seems funny but think about the hours ppl spend sitting in front of the TV instead of talking with their kids or spending more time as a family, you would rather sit in front of TV like a zombie who is addicted lol.....like crack.

As for computer that is another one that is becoming a hour stealer...time fly by on computer

I actually watch much less tv these days (though it seems the computer tends to take up where the television left over). I'm of the generation that grew up glued to the tv set (60s sitcoms, Disney every Sunday night, etc.) and it became a part of life. There's not much on that I enjoy watching any more though, other than Dexter and the odd movie on the Movie Network. My problem now is the computer...I intend to sit down for ten minutes and, two hours later, can still be at it. [However, this does tend to be mainly in the colder months, because if it's nice outside I'm nowhere to be found indoors.]

Oh, forgot to add (to address the question a bit better), there have been times when I've been in front of the tv and just sat there even though nothing interesting was on, simply because of laziness...too much bother to get up and do something else, especially after working all day. That would be a defining moment for me of 'too much'...and that would be the time when opting for a book or some other hobby might be a much better choice. :)

Speaking generally though, I have no idea whether this generation spends too much time in front of the tv; I suppose it depends upon the definition of 'too much time'. I tend to think the computer trumps television these days though. And for either medium, there's advantages and disadvantages to both.

I'll watch it on the very, very rare occasion that there's a good movie on. I'd never pay for a TV license though. I think you'd have to be a bit stupid to do so, to be honest. TV is 99.9% brainless drivel.

But yeah, i think most people watch too much TV. I'm pretty confident that the world would be a much better place without it.

Funny, you just seemed to be waiting to say your piece, since the posts prior to your "So that says it all" really don't support your supposed "conclusion." Heck, one of three says "I don't watch any TV."

Just saying, is all.

It really isn't about how much TV we watch but how you process what you are watching and what you take away from it. TV has the capacity to create national and global awareness where otherwise, we would be limited by what information was available in the community where we live. It can also be highly addicting, especially if you are using it as an escape device to avoid conflict in your life. However, I think that the same thing can happen with the Internet and video games so it is silly to single out one medium as bad.

If your sole source of information is the TV, then I would be concerned. If children are watching TV without any structure and/or guidance, I would be concerned. One of the first things we taught our daughter to do when she was a toddler was to turn off the TV. She really liked that power! LOL! Now, she is 12 and we watch TV together. We have some shows we like to watch but if we miss one, we aren't destroyed. I enjoy this opportunity to test her ability to reason and we will comment on whether we think the show was well written, if the plot was believable, and if the commercials were successful in their attempt to create a want, etc., etc. She is very perceptive and I hope she will carry this analytic behavior on to other parts of her life.

I don't watch TV per se at all. I spend about 1.5-2 hours per night watching either movies or TV series on DVD, and that is all. During the time when many would watch TV, I read, paint, listen to music, etc.

I have the TV on for sound more than for viewing - I am usually doing something for work - or on the computer doing work - while it's on. The only time I actually watch it is when my hubby and I watch a program together - usually news or documentary!
Most people I know have specific shows they watch one or 2 nights a week! Gone are the days when I think people are really glued to the set! TV really isn't what it used to be! It's all reruns and boring crap!!

Personally I don't think I watch too much, I watch about two hours a week. Computer time on the other hand... I might have a problem there.

hi... TV is like any other thing in life>> it can be good or bad depending on its use or abuse... I love the food network, documentaries and biography, nature shows but even then I barely watch it some day, even going days without turning it on... reading is my passion, nonfiction at this point in my life... blessings, warmly Mona

I spend less than twenty minutes on front of a television a day, but I spend hours on front of a computer. I play video games, socialize, etc.

It's all part of the fact that the computer is replacing more and more of the activities that used to take place in the "real" world - finances, mailing, entertainment, etc. As a society we're going to have to find a means to balance the greatness of these machines with the sedentary lifestyle it encourages.

If I had a choice I would have a tv, radio and computer funneling 'garbage' into my brain with the flick of a switch, anywhere I was.
The old man by the sea, has gotten so good at filtering through garbage, he eventually made a mansion out of treasures he'd found. lol

I know I watch to much TV. I have a TV plugged into my PC which I watch TV shows from DVD or online while programming, writing, or working on digital artwork. It's not often that I do sit down in front of the TV and watch cable broadcast when I can just build a play list on my PC and watch the shows I like with very limited commercial breaks (the websites I watch TV shows on do have commercials but only 10 to 30 seconds while the video stream loads).

No, we do NOT watch too much tv (hey, someone has to stick up for those poor, beleaguered and downtrodden TV executives, advertising big wigs, marketers, local station folks and production people).

I would love to stay and chat more about this, but I have stuff to do....
...click...seen it...

...click...oh god, what's Lindsey up to now....

...click...Alright, I've seen this episode of House - three times - but it's a great one...

I don't watch much tv, except maybe when I watch my sports, and even that's not too often, b/c my work schedule is inconsistent, so sometimes I miss my games. I could take time away from the computer though, like right now.

Well, i would have to agree something are not as bad as others on TV. It does connect us and allow us to know what is going on. Even thoe sometimes what we see is not really what is going on over there. I think they pick and choose what we see or allow us to see to give our ideas about countries or people.

So im sure there are good things but im very sure there are way more bad then good on TV and do you think it really had the ability to re-wire someones brain to think certain ways they normally wouldnt think ?
