I had never heard of them before a movie I've just seen a few days ago called "Control" About an English band called Joy Division.....HBO also has a documentary out on the band..

The lead singer hung himself in 1980 at the age of 23 and just the night before the band was making it's first tour of the USA...They had 2 albums out...

I think they would have been right up there with the top rock bands of that time and plan on buying the CD's tomorrow...

Question is, have you heard of this band before? Have you seen the movie 'Control' and what did you think of the band and more so the lead singer....By the way having seen live footage and BBC footage of the real band on the HBO documentary and the movie about them I can tell you the actor who plays the lead singer is a dead ringer for him not only in looks but his mannerism's and voice are a dead on impression..

Cool band. They later became New Order. I'm more into punk than post punk, but these guys were ok. I think I heard the name 'Joy Division' came from a Nazi prostitution service provided to members of the party...

i personally love joy division. im really into the post-punk era of rock...theres nothing like it..and the singer ian curtis suffered from epilepsy..his death was so sad =/

unknown pleasures and closer i believe were the two albums the released..definately check them out..specifically songs such as "Love will tear us apart" transmission, isolation, digital, and, disorder. those are my favs!!

if you like the post=punk era of music, be sure to check out the chameleons, echo and the bunnymen, and siouxie and the banshees..soo great!!

Joy Division, huh?

(((cracks knuckles)))

First time I heard them (back in 1985 or 86) I HATED them. Thought that Ian Curtis sounded monotone and lifeless. I'm still sort of that opinion, but that’s only after cycling through all the countless bands that were either directly influenced by Joy Division, or were outright imitators. For quite a long time, Joy Division were essentially the pole star around which a TON of bands revolved. These days, you don’t have to look much further than a band like Interpol to see an example of Joy Division’s lasting influence.

I can't really remember the exact moment when I changed my mind about JD. I can remember that there was a really good college station in East Stroudsburg, PA that used to feature a show called "The Gotham City Underground," and the DJ played JD often. He played JD's version of "Sister Ray" on his show (maybe he needed to visit the WC, as that is a looooong number) and I was intrigued, if not exactly hooked.

I liked New Order much more on first brush, and that was what probably the "event horizon" for me, as far as liking Joy Division was concerned. After all these years, it doesn't surprise me one iota that I find Joy Division's music much more compelling than New Order's stuff (which is still quite good, mind you). You can attribute that to whatever factors you like: morbid death cult fascination, the diminutive discography, nostalgia, better songwriting, fewer synths ... whatever. I figure that at the heart of it, there remains the fact that Joy Division was frozen in time like a snapshot once Curtis hung himself, and were never afforded the opportunity to get old and put out music that wasn't up to snuff with their very best. That song and dance jibes with almost any artist that dies young, never mind the medium of expression.

As far as the recent slew of films (Anton Corbijn's "Control," and the eponymous documentary ... does two count as a "slew?" In Joy Division's case, I'd be inclined to say that it does) are concerned, I've enjoyed them very much. I got a real kick out of the actor that portrayed Rob Gratton in “Control.”. What a plum role! “Alle-f*****-Loo-Ya!”

All this exhuming of things from the past has me getting a bit dewy-eyed. Ah … nostalgia. What a bummer that we all get old and die.

…unless we hang ourselves on the eve of our band’s first major US tour.

I’ll settle for obscurity and old age, thank you very much.

One last tidbit … since watching “Control” and the JD documentary, here is a mental game I’ve been playing with myself:

Take your favorite band or artist and assume that they died at 23 years of age. What sort of discography would they be left with? Remember, Nirvana’s Cobain made it to 27, right? What would that leave you with? Not much, I’ll wager. It all underscores just how much Ian Curtis and Co. accomplished so early and on such a short timetable.

Other members of CLub 27: brian jones, janis joplin, jim morrison, tim buckely, jimi hendrix...

Joy Division isnt to my liking, never have been. I couldnt stand any of those lame voiced British post-punk synth bands of the early 80s. Wire wasnt too bad though, but they had a lot of guitar along with the synthesizers.

Bit of trivia: joy division was the name that the nazi's used for a camp of jewish women who would give the nazi's sex in exchange for things like their survival and the survival of their family. Real cheery bunch, that joy division were...

yeah ian curtis like many young brilliant rock minds, was also very troubled..having dealt with his epilepsy that in those times was possibly not very well under control, as well as depression.

it really is a shame, but at least there is his music that still carries on. it is great however that in his short time he was able to make some great music..not many bands i dont think are able to do such a feat at such a young age..

I'm was going to add that Ian suffered from Bi-Polar but purple touched on it I see in her second post.....
To get specific about the name yes it was the name the Nazi **stards gave to the place they kept women specifically for them to use and abuse...lets not call it prostitution when the women were brutally forced to do this stay alive.

But as for Joy Division I am an instant fan and wish I knew of them in 78-80 when the two albums came out....

Check out the movie '24 Hour Party People'. It more or less about the guys who started Factory Records, who put out Joy Division/ New Order. Whether or not it is completely factual, I'm not sure. Not a bad movie, kinda funny.

They released 2 studio albums in their time (the 2nd album a few months after Ian Curtis's death) but have released several compilations/live discs since then.

Their two studio discs were remastered in 2007 with a bonus cd of live material from 1979/80.

there is actually a movie called "Joy Division - Review"
its all about the music, how the band got started, how the songs were
written, what the meaning of the lyrics are, plus the story about one
of'the best album covers ever. Try reading the lyrics as you listen
to the songs, all i can say is WOW. Joy Division have had probably over
half there song's covered by other bands, and im not including New Order.
yes, they had 2 album releases, but they also had 2 with unreleased music on them too.
New Order actually did an all Joy Division setlist at a show back in 2006 i
think it was..
cheers

I'm a big fan of the band, I first heard them on the excellent John Peel radio programme on BBC radio 1 around the time Unknown Pleasures was released. I was in my early teens and would stay up late listening on headphones in the dark, and when I heard tracks like Day of the Lords it'd send shivers down my spine - still does in fact.
Control is a great film and well worth watching, even if you aren't a huge fan of the band.

love JD, thought Control was a great movie - also thought it was neat the actors all played their actual instruments and sang the vox, very cool!

Fantastic band, they will always have a special place in my heart.

In fact, I was a DJ/promoter at the time, & was responsible for the first gig New Order performed as they rose from the ashes of Joy Division after Curtis's death.

Their manager, the late great Tony Wilson, was also a pleasure to deal with, although he drove a hard bargain!!

I actually recorded the gig, & have often thought about putting it out there.

I've only recently gotten into the Joy Division, after watching a documentry about them and the film Control (everyone should see it). After listening to just a few of their songs She's Lost Control, Dead Souls, Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart. I have come to the opinion the Joy Division were an amazing band, with more talent than a lot of the 'hottest' groups today. It was a shame Ian Curtis killed himself so young at the age of 23.

Joy Division is a great band, dark cold and awesome. The remaining members went on to form new order which is pretty good considering that there lead singer hung himself but due to health problems. with out the joy you'd poropaly wouldn't get goth music like luna coil, the cure but the cure came out around the same time as the second album

Oh yes I've heard of them. They're one of my favorite groups ever. They only had two albums because lead singer Ian Curtis killed himself. They are called "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer" and are worth checking out.

Like a lot of British post-punk groups of the 1980s (i.e., Bauhaus, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, New Order) Joy Division released some of their best songs as singles, not on any official release. If you want to hear stuff like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere" you need to pick up one of their singles collections. I recommend "Substance: 1977-1980."

As far as the movie "Control" goes, I thought it was very well done. I had actually started listening to Joy Division around the time the movie came out, and I thought the lead actor captured Ian Curtis' spirit very well. It's just like I'd imagine the guy to be, a total manic depressive.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE 'em. They've helped spawn many recent bands (e.g. Interpol, She Wants Revenge) who don't hide their affinity for the J.D. sound.

Insight, Isolation, and She's Lost Control give me shivers.

Loved Joy Division. Saw them once. Ian Curtis was just a very troubled guy, had a lot of problems and was clinically depressed. I wasn't surprised when I heard of his passing. It's funny though, now when I listen they kind of seem dated. New Order started out great and then got very boring, in my humble opinion. Somebody mentioned Wire - now they stand the test of time... and nobody's dead yet!

"Existence— well, what does it matter?
I've existed for the best use i can
The past is now part of my future
The present is well out of hand."
