Most of us know that exposure to very loud noise, or prolonged exposure to loud noise, causes noise-induced hearing loss. If your ears are ringing the next day it is a sign of permanent damage, however significant or slight that loss might be.
There are numerous kinds of ear plugs, some made of foam, to protect your hearing in such conditions.
To prevent or reduce noise-induced hearing loss do you wear ear plugs to a concert or other public places such as club, dance, or perhaps motor sports event such as the Indy 500?
If you don't wear ear plugs at such times is it only because of what others might think of you? If more people wore ear plugs at those times would you do so then?

Retarded response poster 2. I wear ear plugs at work because things tend to get quite loud, but not at the bar or anything like that. For one, it would look ridiculous.

What is stupid about protecting your hearing when you can wear ear plugs and still enjoy the music?
Perhaps those that will need hearing aids in their senior years because they didn't protect their hearing will be proven to be stupid?

Posted: 12/1/2008 2:25:44 PM | I am inclined to think if these Concerts are capable of creating Hearing Damage, they should also have Safety Measures in Place such as Volume Limits. But that may be hard to do, esp. since some sit closer to the Audio Source than others.
I never go to any Concert or Performance that is so loud that I need to wear Plugs.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 3:08:56 PM | The question was:
Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert?
The answer is no and poster #3 ....if you think wearing ear plugs to a concert is good then all the power to you....I have been to hundreds of concerts and not once did I waste my money on ear plugs so I could get a bit of the sound from the concert....I paid good money and I came to hear the concert AS MOST DO not muffle an awesome artists music with something so silly as ear plugs......and that is why I thought the question to be stupid as I think those who go to a concert and wear earplugs is halarious....who wants to hear a muffled sound ...LOL! ....If your worried about your hearing....Dont go to concerts, they are meant to be LOUD.
Dont get me wrong, when I drove heavy machinery I always wore my ear plugs to protect my hearing but when I go to listen to an expensive concert I want to HEAR it Clearly ! not muffled and Tyee I just had a hearing test done 3 weeks ago and guess what ....my hearing is perfect...however it is selective if you know what I mean...lol !

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 3:30:29 PM | i've seen hundreds of concert's...in my life time... but in the last couple of yrs i've been concerned about the noise levels...
i now where ear plugs at concerts... i love to people watch at concerts ...that's half the fun for me ... it's not just about the music for me..it's just as much a social thing..as it is the music..
i went to ac/dc on friday and everyone i was with and spoke to all said it was way to loud..... i had ear plugs in and still have a little trouble hearing in my left ear right now 3 days later..
so when i went to Disturbed on sunday i made sure they were in there good and tight.. and i could still hear them clear as a bell..i'll be taking them with me on tues. to metallica...for sure..
i'll bring them with me on friday to cheech and chong and play it by ear..lol..;) if put them in or not... there's no band or function worth losing my hearing over...:)

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 5:51:38 PM | As I have suffered a profound hearing loss , I have learned that hearing protection is critical in any situation that threatens to damage your hearing. when your hearing is gone, ITS GONE FOREVER! People that think it won't happen to them should think again. | |

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 6:05:25 PM | I wish I were at the AC/DC concert the other night, but I've been spoiled already having seen them twice.
With the cost of tickets so high now, it is rare that I would go out but did get to see the Stones when they were here last and, yes, took along the earplugs. But then hey, they wear ear plugs, dentures, bifocals and pacemakers, too...... It's easier to 'fake it' for women with longer hair so why not!
So far as earplugs for the Indy - no way.... need the sound of the motors for the rush.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 6:22:20 PM | I for one think that this is a great thread and Idea to do when going to a concert.
I have to admit that I don't use ear plugs at concerts for the purpose of protecting my hearing, (even though it does that too!) I started doing this when I was told that plugs cut down on the distortion that can happen depending on the location of the concert. And have enjoyed said concerts much better ever since.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 7:53:00 PM | Why would anyone choose to go to a concert that they know will be so deafening that they will require ear plugs? When I go to a music concert, I too want to hear the music clear as a bell, not a muffled version, mind you I don't normally attend heavy metal concerts so the volume isn't that bad. I think people should have been wearing nose plugs instead of ear plugs at the AC/DC concert 'cause all you had to do was breathe in the air around you to get stoned.
Some people wear ear plugs to air shows but I don't 'cause I love the sound of the jets ... that's part of the excitement of the show for me, although if you're working around aircraft regularly, you have to wear them.
I usually keep an ear plug under my pillow so I can stick it in if the "spooner" snuggled up behind me starts snoring in my ear. The other ear is usually protected by my pillow. I should really wear them when I sleep alone too so my own snoring doesn't wake me up.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 8:28:05 PM | As Rings said, there is no band or function worth losing my hearing over. I have a few friends that need to wear hearing aids and that is a fate I wish to avoid.
Perhaps I should have made more obvious the other parts of the original question that wouldn't fit in the title along with music concert.
"... or other public places such as club, dance, or perhaps motor sports event such as the Indy 500?"
The only reason why I might subject myself to loud volume music would be to have fun.... such as dancing. I've been to dances at pubs or other venues where typically the dance floor is right next to the speakers and sometimes it is inevitable to end up dancing right in front of them. I've learned that when the music is excessively loud my ears actually hurt and I cannot enjoy myself. By wearing ear plugs I hear the music clearly and at a tolerable volume. It is awkward to dance while jamming a finger in each ear.
I agree with Spud too, the ear plugs reduce the distortion.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/1/2008 11:18:41 PM | I purchased custom made earplugs many years ago for $70.00 and was that ever a worthwhile investment. I just can't take loud music and I am out listening to music and dancing pretty much every Saturday.
I think the foam ones do distort sound, but my custom ones don't. I have no idea what happens to the sound when my friends put screwed up bits of paper napkins in their ears for particularly loud bands.
I have read that noise over 80 decibals for 30 minutes or longer will damage your ears.

it's true i've been exposed to levels well over 80 decibals for more than a half an hour....... and i can't hear a thing you're writing.....what's that i can't hear you....lol....j/k..
i know after ac/dc on friday i can never go to another concert of any kind.... without at least having ear plugs with me...
i think that there is a very small chance i won't use them ...depending on what band it is.. but i will always have the option to wear them or not wear them... because i will never go without them again..i can't afford too!!!
i'm finding the older i get... that old people didn't get to be old people ..by being too care free with anything...

Where did you get the custom-made ear plugs?
I've tried various off-the-shelf foam ear plugs and not experienced much distortion. If the music is loud enough to motivate me to wear the ear plugs then the music I do hear is still plenty loud.

Yes, that is what I do... bring the earplugs. I don't to wear them but have the option to use.
In fact at some events there are times when I do remove them, such as when the band takes a break and its a better time to socialize and conversation is possible without having to shout.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/2/2008 10:52:53 AM | Growing up in Edmonton, I went to hundreds - yes hundreds - of concerts. I never wore ear plugs. I sure wish I did, though. My hearing has been irreparably damaged and I can assure you, most of, if not all of the damage is due to listening to loud music.
So yappy, just because you choose not to protect your ears, doesn't make this a "dumb question".
You'll understand once you grow up.

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/2/2008 5:59:51 PM | I have. I want to be able to enjoy music for my entire life, so I try to take care of my hearing.
If you want good sound, listen to a studio recording.
Most of the concerts I frequent require no hearing protection. Besides, the mezzo doesn't sound that loud way up in the nose-bleed section where I sit. *ch*

| Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert? Posted: 12/3/2008 2:08:29 AM | Tyeee,
I got the custom made ear plugs at a store that also sells hearing aids.
I am lucky, I have hair long enough to cover my ears, so the earplugs are never visible. I think some of my male friends would like to wear them but don't like the idea of them being visible. I think they should wear them anyways, vanity isn't worth damaging one's hearing over.
I did see a couple of men at Firefighter's Club recently with foam earplugs in.
