There was a pic with the news byte with blonde Barb in black net hose, mini-skirt, black boots, not Goth, but definitely a creature of the night! I saw the Chuckie movies, but this Barbie phenom has grown waaay beyond her doll dimensions.
Does this move symbolize some new outbreak in the sexual revolution? Might sound silly, but I know of at least one lady on here, a smart one, too, considers Barbie the personification of evil. Now that she's the personification of, uh, night life, is the new Barbie a harbinger of change? | |

yea but those Bratz dolls are on the way out ...Mattel won the law suit and the courts ruled that after the first of the year they cant be produced unless Mattel does it ...you see the designer of the Bratz dolls worked for Mattel and made the sketches for the Bratz dolls while on the clock at Mattel then he sold them to the competition ..so the courts ruled that Mattel owns the copy rights to the Bratz dolls ...so the company (i dont remember who it is ) that makes the bratz dolls cant make them anymore after January unless they buy the copy right or pay Mattel a royalty...and because of the competition to Barbie ... that royalty would be steep ..this was in the news a couple weeks ago

Throughout Barbies history there have been complaints about her body - clothing - careers - you name it! The popularity of the doll has been her playability and appeal to young ladies world wide. There are collectors clubs and businesses all over the world who depend on her continued popularity and the controversies only add to her appeal!
Barbie will live on forever!!

With the current economic slump,a new "controversial"one will pop up on the market so folks like myself will make the investment.I have the gay Ken.He's wearing a lavendar vinyl tank top,freedom rings around his neck,has blond frosted hair and his right ear pierced.He's "Earring Magic Ken".
I also have "Butterfly Barbie"who has a big buterfly tattooed across her stomach,and is wearing a low cut,high cut top paired with daisy dukes.She also came with temporary tattoos to use on yourself.Yep,she got pulled off the market.
I also own the talking Barbie who utters the phrase'Math is hard".
Through out the years,friends have added to my collection some even customizing the dolls,so I have a Goth Barbie,a Wendy O Williams (the late singer of the Plazmatics)Barbie,and a Domininatrix Barbie among the collection.
Are they Hellspawn?
Gods,I hope so since I purchased timeshare in Bungalo #7 by the fiery pits.I also have a first class seat in the Handbasket.
What I won't have is one of those "Bratz"dolls.Does no one else think there's anything controversial about the messages they send?Or am I the only one to point at that elephant in the livingroom. | |

Posted: 12/12/2008 8:58:00 AM | I played with Barbie (I had just one) and I'm okay - my daughters played with Barbies (they had many and also had the camper and the house and everything I could get my little hands on)...and they're okay. My granddaughter never played with Barbies or any other dolls for that matter, and she's okay.
What the hell...it's only a doll and even I, a self proclaimed feminist (dirty word around here I know) don't care about the Barbie controversy.
I have more faith in people and in humanity as a whole than to assume than a doll can ruin anyone ...to me, that's completely ridiculous.
If a little girl or boy get their sexual/social/ identity - sense of self from a doll or a cartoon or any other fictional character/story/fairy tale books, it seems to me that there's some serious issues at play that have nothing to do with whether little Mary or little Johnny played with Barbie or G.I.Joes or with guns or anything of the sort. In my opinion anyway.

In recent years, Barbie has come out with adult versions in their Silkstone collections. They are all in lingerie, heels, etc. So if she's going to hell, might as well look sexy.

They've done other super hero characters, I don't see what the big deal is. Wonder Woman had on less clothes, so I don't know why people think the Black Canary Barbie is all that much sexier.

It's 2008 and we just now have our first minority prez, after First Nations were declared "real" people, blacks have been out of slavery since before we all were born, and most of us don't remember what it means to not eat grapes. And the new Prez's slogan was "we can do it", not si se puede. We are the sum of our learning, and that learning is heavily influenced by pop culture and our toys and play as children.
If we lived 100 years ago the women here would be wearing corsets. 200 years, the men would wear the finery, 300 years and we'd be dealing with FN savages and black slaves on a daily basis. These ideas were the given, and not examined then. To not understand in the some way we are governed by our "givens" now, such as Barbie, is to live the unexamined life, and to live it less fully.
