| Anyone a cyclist on here? Posted: 12/21/2008 8:52:02 PM | I am new to this site and I was curious to find out who on here is a cyclist. Include what kind of riding you prefer and perhaps the bike you ride... I'll start.
I really enjoy some technical mountain biking, I ride a new 243 hardtail... Handmade here in Vancouver. I am thinking about buying an Electra beach cruiser for the summer. I am getting old here so I have to start taking it easy!

Cough, cough!
I'm twice your age and I expect to be pedaling my ass next year, though admittedly not hard-core mountain biking.
If plans work out I'll be replacing my mountain bike with a comfort bike, but even if I don't, either way, that still qualifies me as a cyclist!

I have been in the cycling industry for years now (almost 10 years) and cyclists come from many different walks of life. From the well to do types to the paycheck-to-paycheck types, it's all about the passion.
Cycling is something of an equalizer; as soon as you get on the bike it doesn't matter who you are, just matters that you are out there doing what makes you feel good.
I ride almost year round, I use my mountain bike as a form of fitness and transportation. Since we have gotten this snow, I have put the bike away till next season. :(

Had lots of good bails on it But I stopped riding the hardcore trails a few years ago. Now I just have my Norco Bushpilot that I ride everywhere on. If I'm going on the trails, I have some heavy duty wheels with knobby tires. If I'm just gonna be doing some road riding, I throw on my lightweight wheels and slicks. I need to get out there and ride more often!! That'll be one of my new years resolutions.

| Anyone a cyclist on here? Posted: 12/23/2008 9:55:50 AM | oh ya, I'm currently in the process of turning my old BMX bike into a "cruiser". I have the springer fork, the sissy bar and the ape-handle bars. I'm just lookin for a new banana seat and some white wall tires. I have a 3 speed internal coaster brake rear hub, but I'm trying to locate a shimano 3 speed stick shifter that I can mount on the top tube. My uncle gave me a big ol' bullet style headlight that he found around his house, and my friend said that he might have a generator (that'll run off my tire) for it. | |

I did see a guy riding a mountain bike up the rather steep hill in Kamloops from the town up past TRU in heavy snow and -25c on Saturday. It was very impressive.
What bike would you recommend that I buy once the weather gets a bit better?

Something like a Norco Mountaineer. A local company that builds good quality bikes.
As for the bike generator statement. It's mainly gonna be for cosmetic purposes, with me trying to recreate the look of an old "Stingray" style bike. I'll just be taking it down to Pats Pub for the monthly Grease and Grind shows, where guys bring their primered rat rods and old cars down for a rockabilly show.

Good times. Right now I am on a Marinoni and Epic. Peace K

Now I have nothing against Norco, and own one myself.
However when I was researching for a new bike a few months ago I talked to both local bike shops, one of which is a Norco dealer, the other isn't.
When I spoke to the one that isn't and asked about the "Made in Canada" aspect of Norco bikes he invited me to his shop so I could see the many pieces of evidence (such as packaging with labels) he has, proving that Norco bikes aren't actually built in Canada.
I didn't go there yet but I got the impression that Norco bikes may be designed in Canada and perhaps assembled in Canada, using imported components.
From a brief glance at the Norco website I didn't find any clarity on this. http://www.norco.com

| Anyone a cyclist on here? Posted: 12/25/2008 8:55:45 AM | I have been working in the cycling industry for almost 10 years and I know a lot of the dirty secrets. Norco bikes are designed at their Port Coquitlam location and assembled with imported parts at their secret assembly location.
The reason why so many parts are made overseas is that the technology to make them is very readily available, so much so that their is little to no privacy of company secrets. One of the companies I work for makes their high-end components here in the Vancouver area so that certain information does not leak out...

Now when I go riding in downtown Victoria, it sure turns a lot of heads especially from tourists, and other bikers keep asking where I got them!

| Anyone a cyclist on here? Posted: 11/5/2009 2:02:02 PM | | I mountain bike, I love downhill. I have not biked in years, but I do plan on buying a bike soon. I am interested in the electric bicycles. I saw a shop on Hastings that sells electric scooters and bicycles and found a bicycle that can go 80km on a single charge and only costs like $1200. I only wonder what the bylaws are on taking bikes on the skytrain, so far I have not seen anyone take a bike on the train. You should set something up like a ride or something, I would like to get back into it. I would set it up, but I am new to the site. | |
