Help with a Math problem.
Posted: 12/27/2008 7:38:31 PM
Someone give me the answer to this.

There are 7 girls in a bus.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat there are 7 little cats.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

I'm arguing 5th grade math with another mother. I need help.

I'm crying already reading this LOL!

Here is how I would do the math, and mind you, i'm not the Math Major.

7 Girls, 7 backpacks = 14 total legs
7 back packs per girl, 7 big cats per bag. 7x7x7 (my calc is broken!)

Total thus far: 14 + 7x7x7 = ???

Each big cat = 7 little cats

....no, i'm wrong, i'm off base here. Just answer "There are as many legs as there are feet" if you want to really confuse things ^_^.

7 girls, = 14 legs,
first 7 cats = 28 legs,
7 cats x 7 cats, x 4 legs, = 196 legs

I got 238. but I didn't include the bus driver.

What numbers did each of the others get?

\/\/ opps right I missed out the backpacks. So you are correct. Thanks.

We got 1,582 legs in all.

That was 7 girls with 2 legs = 14

7 girls with 7 backpacks = 49 backpacks
49 x 28 (7 bigcats' legs) = 1372

Then: 7 small cats for every big cat = 49

49 small cats x 4 lesgs each = 196

1372 + 196 = 1,568

then adding in each of the 7 girls' 2 legs = 14

1,568 + 14 = 1,582

I don't know if that's the right answer, but by the gods, I gave it my best shot.

Edit: I hope we're not counting the bus driver or any other kids on the bus.

14 human legs - 7 girls x 2 legs/person

1372 cat legs - 7 girls x 7 bags x 7 cats x 4 legs/cat

9604 kitten legs - 7 girls x 7 bags x 7 cats x 7 kittens x 4 legs/cat

10990 total legs - 14 + 1372 + 9604

10992 if there is a bus driver

Let's go through it...

The 7 girls have 14 legs.

The 7 girls have 7 backpacks - total 49 backpacks. 7 big cats per backpack - 343 cats.
4 legs per cat - 1372 legs.
7 little cats per big cat - 2401 little cats. 4 legs per cat - 9604 legs.

Add it all up - 14+1372+9604=10960 legs. Add in the bus driver - 10962 legs.

7 girls x 7 backpacks x 7 big cats = 343 big cats
343 big cats x 7 little cats = 2,401
2,401 + 343 = 2,744 total cats

7 girls x 2 legs = 14 legs
2,744 cats x 4 legs = 10,976 legs
10,976 + 14 = 10,990 total legs

7 girls = 14 legs,
7 backpacks still = 14 legs,
7 big cats times the 7 girls times the 7 back packs times the legs = +14 girls legs, =1386

7 girls x 7 backpacks x 7 big cats x 7 small cats = 14+1372+9604 = 10,990 legs
I missed the 49 big cats having 7 small cats each.

For fun here it is as the shortest equation I could think of.

(7 x 2) + (7 x 7 x 7 x 8 x 4)
=10990

There are 7 girls in a bus...7 girls = 14 legs

Each girl has 7 backpacks....7 girls X 7 backpacks each = 49 backpacks

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.....49 backpacks X 7 big cats = 343 big cats X 4 legs each = 1372 big cat legs

For every big cat there are 7 little cats......343 big cats X 7 little cats = 2401 little cats X 4 legs each = 9604 little cat legs

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

9604 little cat legs + 1372 big cat legs + 14 girl legs = 10,990 legs total.

7 girls x 2 legs = 14 legs
7 backpacks x 7 cats large x 4 legs = 196 legs
7 cats large x 7 cats small x 4 legs = 196 legs

14 legs + 196 legs + 196 legs = buses don't have legs, they have wheels. Ha ha.

OK, 79 backpacks then.

How many three-legged cats?

The traveling salesman is talking to the farmer when all of the sudden a blur streaks past. \

What the hell was that? asks the salesman.

That? That was one of my three-legged chickens. Says the farmer.

A three-legged chicken? I never heard of one. Says the salesman.

Yep. says the farmer. I got the idea I could sell more chickens if they had an extra leg, because people like their fried chicken drumsticks. So I bred them special for a few years and finally got the result.

That's amazing, said the salesman, but how do they taste?

I don't know, said the farmer, I haven't been able to catch one.

(Each chicken had a backpack.)

10990 total

7 lc x 4 legs = 28 lc legs

(28 lc legs x 7bc) + 7bc(4 legs)= 1 bp
196 + 28 = 1 bp
224 = 1 bp

224lgs per bp x 7bp per girl
224 x 7 = 1 girl
1568 legs = per girl

1568 x 7g +7g(2 legs) = total legs on bus
10976 + 14 = 10990 legs

10990 total legs

What kind of backpack can hold 56 cats of any size? Why are there a bus full of girls carrying so many backpacks of them. What kind of bus driver would allow this? Where is this bus going? What will these girls do with all of these cats when they get there?

Why would they need 7 backpacks each? Is it even possible for someone to carry 7 backpacks at once? Surely one big bag each would be more practical.

Regarding the leggy question : do any of the cats have fleas? At 6 legs a flea , this could seriously effect the total.
