I'll be attending a week-long conference in New Orleans in early to mid January and I'm looking for recommendations for must-see activities and places to visit. FYI, the conference is at the convention centre with the hotel in the immediate vicinty. Thanks!

Hi Sweetest. The list of must see and do activities in New Orleans is way to long to list here. I am a native and still a resident and find it hard to do all that I love to do here. But, any visit to N'Awlins must begin with food, food and more food. Then music, art, history, shopping, etc. etc. My favorites near the convention center are in the French Quarter and in no particular order: Acme Oyster House, Napoleon House, Chart Room, Palace Cafe, Coops, Port of Call, Pat O'Brien's, Mona Lisa, Preservati0n Hall, Cafe du Monde, and this is crazy! Drop me an email and I will gladly chat about more. Have fun!

One more suggestion...take a look at our weekly newspaper at www.thebestofneworleans.com for some insight. Sounds like you will be staying in the Warehouse District, so check that neighborhood's listings as well as those in the French Quarter. Good luck!

Hi...

I'm 'lifting' a couple of posts I placed at other forums. It's a way for you to do some 'looking'... and, hopefully, find things you'd like here in the "Crescent City."

**********************************
Here are a couple of sites that might be helpful:

www.neworleanscvb.com

www.neworleansonline.com/calendar/

www.bestofneworleans.com

www.nola.com

http://www.frenchquarter.com/events/

I'm a 'native'... New Orleans born and bred. I love this city (sometime I don't know why, because of all the problems -- crime, politics, etc.). But I guess that's the cool part of loving her... it's "just because." It's great to meet people from other areas who say that they really enjoyed New Orleans. That's such a pleasure. Plus, even though the French Quarter and the downtown area seem to be 'back to normal', there are LOTS of areas that are still greatly damaged after Katrina. So, I hope that this information is helpful to people who might want to visit us... and thereby help our economy. If you do come... I hope you have a BLAST!!! "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez" (Let the Good Times Roll).

I live in a neighborhood called Algiers Point. It's just across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter. At the foot of Canal Street and the river, there's a free ferry that will take you to Da' Point (that's what we locals call it).

We have a few 'bed & breakfast' businesses that would make it easy for you to have a sweet place to stay and still easily get to the French Quarter and anything else that's going on.

Here are a few more links for you to check out:

http://www.algierspoint.org/anfy/bedbreakfast.htm

Here's Tom Fitzmorris' web site (he's a New Orleans food critic):
http://www.nomenu.com/
So, food recommendations, great New Orleans recipes... yum!

Enjoy!!!

Hey, one more...

Do a GOOGLE search: "Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Brad Pitt, filming in his new 'home town.'

Make a point to see the movie before you come here. You'll get to 'experience' New Orleans before you get here. It's a beauty!

Fave TIMES!!!

I'm a New Orleans native. I love my hometown.

Well... the 'Carnival' season in New Orleans always starts on January 6th (Kings' Day). A group called Phunny Phorty Phellows (men AND women... and more than 40 of them) proclaim the beginning of Carnival with a streetcar ride. Check it out for yourself:
www.phunnyphortyphellows.com

And 'Mardi Gras' (french for "Fat Tuesday") is always the day before the Catholic holiday of Ash Wednesday. Since Ash Wednesday is 40 days before Easter, the 'Carnival' season VARIES in length! Remember... different years, different lengths of the 'season.' Short season... parades overlapping each other!!!

Years ago, the weekend before Mardi Gras day was dull. Local (New Orleans) businessmen decided to create a couple of 'super krewes' to get some life into that final weekend and, hopefully, get more tourists to come into town a few days BEFORE Mardi Gras. Guess what...... it worked!!!

So, the weekend before 'Fat Tuesday' is always a monster. GREAT parades. LOTS of activity in the French Quarter and all around town.

For 2009... check it out for yourself:

http://www.nola.com/mardigras/parades/

http://www.nola.com/mardigras/about/

http://blog.nola.com/mardi_gras_faq/

Now, get the hot dogs & chili... and sit you'self down and WATCH some Mardi Gras:

A little more from GOOGLE:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22mardi+gras+2009%22&aq=1&oq=%22Mardi+Gr

Mardi Gras has been called the greatest free show on earth. If you ever come for a visit, I hope you have a WONDERFUL time!

See Ya'...... Hal
