| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 2:49:54 PM | i was wondering if there would be enough interested fish out there in the pond would care to start the new year off by joining me in giving blood and if we managed to get a good response maybe we could make it an annual blood drive at this time of year and then develop t shirts for each year ,
it was just an idea i had that would allow fish to get together and also show we can join forces and help save many lifes at a time of year when blood supplys get low due to most fishes gearing up for the party season
if your interested at all i imagine if we have sufficent numbers we can arrange with the blood transfusion service in glasgow for example to have staff available to support our efforts thank you all for taking the time to read this and i wish each and everyone a very very happy and peaceful 2009

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 2:54:53 PM | It's a marvelous idea, encouraging us to give blood.
I've never done it, yet I know many people who have given loads of the precious fluid away - they make me feel small.
Bless each and every one of you!

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 2:58:59 PM | All the way to Glasgow to give blood? Sheesh! Not likely! I shall stick to trotting up to my local village hall every few months, ta. | |
|
| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:00:24 PM | Giving blood is simple and painless plus you get a feel good factor and a blood check! Just giggle 'blood' and your local centre will be pleased to arrange an appointment.
Bit cheeky but I consider it a good way of maintaining diet and iron levels.
|
| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:00:26 PM | Brilliant idea, maybe you can contact all the different people who organize the meets on Pof and they can do something nationwide?
I have been giving blood since I was 18 and my children do too.
It is no big deal and it does make a huge difference to a lot of people who would otherwise die.
Good on you. x | |

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:07:21 PM | | I have considered giving blood but not sure if I can. Can you give blood if you have got pernicious anemia? Who would want my useless blood? | |
|
| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:09:33 PM | | i am not sure but as one writer suggested your local centre can advise if your not in or around the glasgow area ,,if nothing else i guess it may raise a little awareness and if one person who had not thought about doing so its one person more than this time yesterday | |

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:12:26 PM | can you donate if you have been over the limit for a week -
not really - but perhaps this isn't an ideal time of year to collect , especially in (wait for screams of "typecasting us scots")Glasgow. I would love to join in ,but it would have to be a bit more local - last gave blood 10 yrs ago - stopped due to constantly moving with jobs.

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:14:33 PM | Giving blood is really easy and the people are always friendly and they will always look after new donors, so if you have any doubts...... forget them and find your local donor centre tomorrow.
I gave blood for decades before I was diagnosed as diabetic, and it is one of the few things you can do regularly that has no downside.
It must be one of the few times in anyone's life when they can be quietly proud of themselves and no one can possibly disagree!!
Don't delay, go save a life!
|
| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 3:15:47 PM | Diabetes in itself isn't an exclusion for blood donation... As long as it is properly controlled..
I can't see why a meet that includes blood donation would contravene site rules, so go say hi to a moderator and see what they have to say ...
Good luck and great idea..

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 4:21:55 PM | I've been a blood donor for years in between pregnancies. I've a rare blood type so only donate now when called in to do so as there's no point in wasting it if it's not needed - supply and demand and all that. When I lived in London it was a more regular thing - greater diversity.
I'd encourage people to donate, it's something that is in great demand and something we may all need one day. My life has been saved twice by the donated blood of others and so I feel bound to give some back.

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 4:49:58 PM | | Every time I planned to give blood something happened and I couldn't get to the place in my local area on the set dates. However it's been a while since I tried and you have now encouraged me to go do it. I googled and I'm going on the 18th Jan. Thankyou xx | |

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 5:01:57 PM | i was wondering if there would be enough interested fish out there in the pond would care to start the new year off by joining me in giving blood and if we managed to get a good response maybe we could make it an annual blood drive at this time of year and then develop t shirts for each year , Do i have to provide names,IP addresses, and details of greaviences of those who simpathised simply to keep in with someone? It is the mindless ones who i would subscibe to being got rid of rather than those that had emotion that dictated there thoughts. But i would not want to see anyone blood driven. Just a bit of a wake up call would do!

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/29/2008 5:28:03 PM | Anyone who is not sure what to expect this is the basic procedure and a few bits of info:
-you go along to a donor session -you complete a simple questionnaire that has things about your own health and exposure to disease etc which you only do on your first visit -you complete another short questionnaire every time you visit after that which checks your exposure to certain blood borne diseases since your last donation - this is confidential and you are advised that if you answer yes to certain questions that you do not give blood on this occasion -your blood is ABO typed and you get a card with your blood type, name etc on it -you recline on a bed and a canular is inserted and blood flows into a bag on a rocker device which keeps the blood from coagulating -just under a pint is collected -afterwards you are given a drink and a snack and you rest for a short time -you can feel light headed afterwards -you are advised not to smoke, drink alcohol or operate machinery for a couple of hours after -sometimes you get localised bruising where the canular was inserted -if you have any problems health wise afterwards go back to the centre or give a call - you'll have a number on your card -you can give blood between ages of 17 and 70 -if you are not sure you can call the national blood service or pop into a static collection centre or mobile one -the website has useful info too -it takes a few days for your body to make up the blood taken -you can donate whole blood (platelets and red blood cells) or you can just donate platelets if you donate whole blood you can donate a max of 4 times per year for platelet donation you can donate more often -you can make an autologus donation - which means if you have an operation coming up and you may need blood (for all operations it is essential to have blood on stand by of the correct type should you need it) you can donate your own blood a few days before and have that given back to you should you need a transfusion (obviously this will only be for the amount you donated) -all donations are tested for certain blood borne diseases including HIV if your sample tests positive you will be informed and offered advice and counselling all done in a highly sensitive and confidential manner and infected blood is destroyed -you can find out where your donation was used, if it was separated into components and what it was used for (names not given cos of confidentiality etc) if you wish -if you receive blood and want to thank the donor you can do this too all blood and its components are bar coded and traceable from donor to recipient -blood has many components and one donation can possibly help many people
hope this helps make up your mind, it's worthwhile and can feel quite rewarding. Donor numbers have decreased significantly and it is something we all could need. Blood has a short shelf life so keeping stocks replenished is important.

| this time of year! a blood drive Posted: 12/30/2008 12:50:53 AM | I became a blood donor about 10 years ago when my wife was going through chemotherapy. She needed to have 3 or 4 units every time she went into hospital and it made me realise that I should put some back into the system.
I was terrified the first time I went but found that everyone was incredibly friendly and made the whole process very easy. They are also always extremely grateful and make you feel as if you have done something really worthwhile.
Once I had done it (and survived ), both of my children became donors and in turn they have persuaded some of their friends to do it.
I now feel really guilty if I miss a session.
