| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/29/2008 3:46:22 PM | Just a thought but do they?
Have just come back from a day at the sales and have to say was appalled. All the clothes seemed to be in dark, drab colours. The choice (clothes, shoes, etc) was DULL,DULL,DULL,DULL,DULL!!!!
Do you have certain items of clothing or certain colours that you wear for reasons other than because you particularly like that colour etc?
I have noticed whenever i go to a party, meet or night out about 90% of the women resort to the LBD and it's become such a bug bear that i try to avoid wearing black with a vengeance (could also be because i wear a fair bit of black in my job too).
We have a Christmas conference every year and the whole company attends and nearly every woman there has on a black business suit. Again, i flatly refuse to wear black to this and try and wear something bright (I have a bright red business suit that tends to get dragged out).
So as i said other than because the colour is one you like, do you sometimes go out of your way to wear something that you know will differentiate you from everyone else in the crowd and why?
I know it must be difficult for guys as your choices are more limited but i would still be interested in your answers.

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/29/2008 3:51:17 PM | I think its something to do with the winter colours or summat like that .. but you are right - everything is dark and dull and dismal :)
I was out today in my jeans and yellow / red / blue / black / white t shirt (aka Rossi 46 t shirt ) quite quite colourful judging by the people who were throwing up around me ...

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/29/2008 3:53:16 PM | I agree with you there I had exactly the same impression. I went shopping with my daughter at the weekend, she wanted something nice and sparkly and dressy for a party and we couldn't find a thing that wasn't drab, dull and just serviceable. Everywhere we looked - jeans and jumpers, short sleeved blouses and cardigans. Ended up coming home and recycling something she already had. We were most disappointed. Whatever happened to the lovely frocks and dressy gear that you used to be able to buy at this time of year - particularly between Christmas and New Year ready for NY Eve parties?
Shoes were in short supply too, all black nothing sparkly or remotely dressy. I thought it was just because we live in a small town and didn't have a lot of choice this year. The 'sales' that are going on just seem to be shifting their old crap that nobody wanted before Christmas but people are now going crazy to buy because it's in a sale with a quid off what they were charging before Christmas.
I wear a lot of black in the winter and wear mainly black for work but add a nice splash of colour with a nice bright top.
In the summer its a different story - I'm a shocking pink lover and I love dressing in red and electric blue. Red shoes are my thing, just love them.

Also I wear a red hanky hanging out of my back pocket when I'm cruising the gay bars !!

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/29/2008 4:27:23 PM | ^^^^ I love red too. If i have a meeting to attend and am feeling nervous, wearing red seems to make me feel more confident.
Also, because i tend to have to wear dark business wear for work i will always try and add colour by wearing a brightly coloured jacket, belt or shoes. I have a brown dress that is quite businessy but i team it with my leopard print stilletos and then i don't feel quite so dull.
I love colour on the dark winter days, it makes the world seem brighter.

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/30/2008 7:42:15 AM | It depends what kind of look I want to create - I have clothes, shoes and bags in all colours and if I do wear black, I'll accessorise with something sparkly or a bright, contrasting colour. I'm extremely glad to be female because we have so much more choice when it comes to the colours of our clothes and the variety we have too.
I love to see men in colours other than black, navy and brown but it take a stylish man to carry off certain brighter colours.

My favourite colour to wear at the moment is red.....for many years I couldn't wear it as I was infact a red-head and it clashed but now i'm blonde I can wear red yipeeeeee

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/30/2008 8:42:38 AM | Ha Ha, no, clothes definately don't make the man. Yes we notice what people look like, or are wearing, and we may make a judgement, at the end of the day a business suit is your work clothes, your job should not define you, nor the way you dress! | |

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/30/2008 11:42:56 AM | | Most of my wardrobe is black but I do like to throw in a few brights (sod Trinny & Suzannah's advice!) to cheer things up...red being a particular favourite. | |

Posted: 12/30/2008 12:13:00 PM | | I wear red for football, white for cricket, a multi coloured hooped thing for rugby (which makes me look huge and intimidating and quite ridiculous all at the same time) and for everything else, summat that is clean and doesnt take much ironing and actually fits.

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/30/2008 3:19:17 PM | I guess Im usually fairly boring and 'safe' with clothes, there are a few things though that I really hate to see go because they are so unusual and just look and feel right..
I had this brown skirt with cords running down the back in the middle that you ruched up and tied in a bow so the gathers hugged your figure and it went down into a fishtail. It even made me sorry that I lost weight! That was from Peacocks, so it isnt necessarily about having to spend.
I also recently had to get rid of a dress because it was getting too worn and faded, but I almost had to mourn it! I dont ever wear big bright patterns or flowers, but this was both, in red, black and white. I got it in USC where I never before or after saw anything else I particularly liked, but this was really nice and unusual and I'd have the same again if I could - of both!
New Look skinny flair jeans but not jeans as they have pockets and seams like trousers get me loads of compliments and as such are like gold dust to me... but do they EVER have them in my size in any of the 3 shops I go near or online??? Aaarghhh! lol
If I cant see anything I really REALLY like, I tend to go safe, but I love to get something unusual if its unusual in a way that fits my style and shape.

| Clothes maketh the man/woman............. Posted: 12/30/2008 3:24:04 PM | Well since I haven't worn a dress since about 1992 (and even that was under protest) I don't do the LBD. I tend to wear jeans/pants and then a top to go with my mood. I do wear alot of black, but then I do suit it as my hair tends to over take whatever top I wear anyway. But I love blues and greens as a rule...anything aqua. I quite like orange (bright) in the summer too.
As to the question...clothes hold little value to me. They are to cover me up, keep me warm etc. But I do think they can aid/hinder your mood too.
