Does the music buying public think music should music be free ?

Ok , im a musician , and ive put untold hours into creating something that never existed before , and its something im proud of , something that i hope will outlive me and give me a tiny sense of immortality maybe , and its something im truly passionate about.

The flip side

Many big name artists are choosing to give away their music with sunday newspapers , sending out a message that music has no worth .
What a lot of people dont know is that those artists have signed very lucrative deals with newspapers , as they in turn promote the paper , and recieve a percentage of the sales , plus an upfront payment.

however , the damage is done , in that the message is out , telling people that prince , or radiohead etc....are giving away their new album for free , even though they will recoup on their live tour with merchandise etc...

Thing is , they've made it , and they screw it up for the up 'n' coming musicians behind them , who see it as potentially giving them a bit more income.

what do you think ? should music be free ?

Meh...I hate Prince nd I hate Radiohead.

My fave band at the moment are The Duallers..a SKA band who used to busk in and around London..nope..they actually still do busk..but they also play paid gigs and supported The Beat aat Dingwalls in Camden just over 2 years ago too.

I hope the likes of Radiohead aand Prince don't stop up and coming artsts from being able to make anything out of their work. ..but they won;t for me anyway..never bought nything of theirs and wouldn't want it if it were free..so I won;t be buying their merch either.

No music shouldn't be free. It's not easy creating anything from scratch, it takes talent, recognition, development and application of that talent and hard work to put something decent together. Artists should charge for it and if it's good enough that people want to listen to it they'll buy it - it worked like this for many years.

I see your frustration with the freebie's and have always hoped that people don't believe for one minute that the artist is getting nothing out of it - let alone the recording companies.

I'd hope that music lovers still have some respect for musicians and would attempt to support up and coming bands by buying their music and not just settling for a collection loaded with freebies.

I think the damage was done on t'internet long before Prince did this deal with the paper.
People really confuse free sometimes. Is it as in beer or as in speech?
Sadly, they think the former is true, because of said t'internet.

I'm all for a good pay for creative work. Good luck with that, mate.

If I buy a book, it is perfectly alright for me to read it aloud to others.

I see nothing wrong with them photocopying it to enjoy at home, because otherwise, they might not have been tempted to read it if they had to buy it first.

The same goes for a cd.

It is perfectly acceptable for me to play it to others. I see nothing wrong in them making their own copy of a cd which they wouldn't have bought in the first place.

In that same vein, I have no problem in sticking a cd on my pc and allowing others to listen to it over their computer. If it is necessary for them to make a copy of it first ( in the form of a file) then so be it. The artist was paid for his efforts in making the album and producing a cd. He might not have sold further cds if people hadn't been able to hear it on my cd player.

Prince never does anything for free. You won't even find a clip of him on Youtube

In my sideline business I use a lot of copyrighted music and I apply for licence and pay what I have to to use it. I could easily try to get away with it and not be honest about the use of it, but the way I see it is that I'm being paid to make a product for someone that is personal to them and often means a great deal, so the person who created the music should get his/her share of the cake too for the work they did to compliment and bring to life my work that I'm selling on. I charge on the occasions when I've written and recorded the music so fair do's.

I don't think any artist shouldbe denied a fair living from their work, but I resent funding the fat-cats and exorbitant life-styles of the Simon Cowells and other assorted parasites that make up the bloated Music Industry that exists today , and is quite distinct from the talented artists and musicians that actually create the stuff we listen to, and love.

I think that musicians are so creative, and provide so much pleasure to the rest of us, of course they should earn a fair wage for what they do , so no, music should not be free. that said, i have been known to copy the odd cd if I cant get hold of it (guilty) .

I even think that the impressarios such as cowell should earn a crust from the music industry, as without these people, we would not be aware of half of the great music around at the moment. The size of that crust does seem to be obscenely excessive , however, and I do object to "talent shows" designed to line their pockets even further....

No it shouldnt be free, but people can get it free and if they can get it free why would they pay when they get screwed in other walks of life by pay cuts, bill increases etc etc.

If the world was fair then everyone would play fair. Musicians just unlucky that the internet has provided free access to any music you want.
