| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/2/2009 8:36:30 PM | I work in an office of 12 women, all either the oldest or only child in their families. We are all really detail-oriented and classic "Type A" personalities. Mercifully, we get along well in our work environment.
When I was married, we were both Oldest children. Our closest friends are also couples made up of Oldest children. I wonder if Birth Order has any bearing on work or personal relationship.
The Oldest child is stereotypically the more rigid, ambitious and responsible child. The Middle child is stereotypically the most vocal, dramatic and troubled. The Youngest child is stereotypically the 'spoiled' one, the 'baby' of the family who gets whatever they want.
What is your Birth Order, and do you feel this affects your work or personal relationship? What other adjectives would you use to describe the Oldest/Youngest or Middle child from your experiences?

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/2/2009 8:40:18 PM | I am screwed up when it comes to this whole Birth Order business.
I was an only child for 8 years....then my parents adopted an older sister...and my mother had a baby brother...within a 4 month period I became a middle child.
Soooooooo.... I am confused.....then... 5 years after that.. I found out that I was adopted.
Sooooooo you tell me....where do I fit in? Makes me want to I kid you not!

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/2/2009 8:46:54 PM | | ^You are the oldest child at least according to theory - gaps of more than 4 years do not count. It is also relevant if there are several children in a family if you are the oldest female or male. I am the oldest child period in my family, but I think my brother may be more rigid than me, but who knows. | |

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/2/2009 11:40:04 PM | I am the youngest of my mom and dad's 3..... and am in the middle when you add dad's younger 3 to the mix. I definitely fit the middle child stereotype.
My bf is the baby of four..and sorry babe....he fits smack into the youngest child category.

Posted: 1/3/2009 7:04:55 AM | I am the oldest child, I am certainly more rigid and responsible than my middle child ex was, and oh boy was he ever vocal, dramatic and somewhat troubled. My best friends are also the eldest child in their families.

Posted: 1/3/2009 10:51:17 AM | when reading books about this subject matter i think what the authors state it pertains to your own immediate sibling group that you and your siblings share the same set of biological parents and does not account for blended families. Many may dispute this as when this birth order phenomena did not take into consideration of blended families as it is attributed within psycho social parameters.
Ok, to answer the question... I'm the y0ungest of both sets... between my brother and I and the youngest of all 4 of us. Yes, I'm spoilt rotten to the core and freely admit to it. Do I take advantage of it ?? at times yes ... then again my siblings think I'm immature and don't have a brain in my head.

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/26/2009 11:27:12 PM | I'm the middle child, which as you said it the most vocal, dramatic and troubled. My older brother's girlfriend thought my younger brother was so cute, so the two always hung out together.
When my Older brother got Married, my Younger brother was his Best Man, and vice versa when my Younger brother got married, while I was told to just stay out of the way.
As for me and relationships.... I'm on POF looking and hoping.

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/27/2009 12:39:12 AM | I'm the oldest and the definition doesn't fit me except maybe I'm ambitious. I'm not rigid (at least, I don't think I am. Maybe others feel differently).
My sister is the youngest and she's the definition to a 'T'. Although, I get almost anything I want from my parents too - most of the time. I'm spoiled lol but I appreciate everything they've done for me, and I show them by trying to repay them (i.e. taking time off when mom was recovering from surgery, taking time off when she got her dental implants, etc etc).

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/27/2009 1:08:33 AM | Middle children are the poster children. The 1st never had a chance. Had to break in the new parents. 2nd kid, parents think they know what they're doing. You take care of your little brother. 1st kid still gets all the blame.
3rd kid, we know what we're doing. You guys, take care of your little sister. 2nd kid knows how to get the 1st kid nailed.
I, of course am the 2nd child.

Countless Service, Performance and Achievement awards from a early age onwards are a constant reminder that
1-I am smarter than them 2-I am better than them 3-Their opinions matter very little if at all 4-They need to listen more and challenge less 5-Questions will handled in the correct fashion if they are asked from a want to learn position or that they are being lazy and looking for a easy way out of a problem 6-Reminders that I can be an ***hole and a jerk are not required, I already know this
Running to mom and dad complaining about any of the above will result in a harsh retribution.
The therapy invoice for the entire family should be 10 times the size it is.
Considering I am the only one that goes it is quite small.

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 1/28/2009 3:14:08 AM | Stereotypes must be recognized for what they are: stereotypes. I'm the youngest in my family and the most accomplished academically. My brother is the eldest, and he is by far the most irresponsible and immature of all. If anything, one could stereotype the eldest child as extremely selfish. I'll never forget prior to my father's funeral, my mother commenting while shaking her head in disgust, that my brother recieved far too much attention as a child. Needless to add, he even confessed to his psychiatrist that he was traumatized when my sister was born. I bet quite a few eldest born children experienced this as well.
As for relationships, I recall how alarm bells went off in my head after my last gf informed me that she was 10 years older than her brother while on our second date. It turned out that my fears were well founded, as she was a spoiled daddy's girl who was far more immature, irresponsible and selfish than her brother.

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 10/22/2009 8:05:31 PM | My sister is 25 I am 19 my brother is 16
I found out a couple years ago that my sister was an accident, my brother was a surprise and I was the only "planned" child in the family. However I always had the feeling growing up that I was never treated fairly.
My sister being the oldest was mostly independent and it seemed like she always got away with more. Being 5 and a half years ahead of me I felt tried to mature faster, too prove that I too can earn the same responsibilities that she had.
Being in the middle of a 9 year gab between eldest and youngest siblings there was always an ovbious degree of seperation. It was rare to find an activity that we could all enjoy togeather, and at times can be more isolating then being an only child.
I always wanted a twin...maybe thats why Im a gemini?

| Birth Orders - Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child? Posted: 10/22/2009 10:32:22 PM | I was the youngest of three, dad had 3 more so I became a middle child. Being the youngest of the first I was no more spoiled than anyone else. My oldest brother fits the oldest child stereotype to a "T", as does my 'middle' brother.
I don't fit any stereotype I don't think...I'm just me :)
