| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 6:29:33 PM | Just curious and partially bored...but...
I'm at the bar last night, see a regular she comes up and says HI we go out side for a smoke and I'm wearing a sweater cause it's 30 below and she's wearing a short cut top with no sleeves.
Just about to go back in and I somehow get on the subject of the sweater and apologize for not giving her the sweater. Then for some reason, I explain to her (trying to justify in my own head who knows) that had I given it to her, I myself would have been cold...
I always do that...it's my life story...like I'm trying to be a jerk or I'm scared she might get the wrong impression...which impression I have no idea. I can't say I like her but she's alright. I have done this a million times in my life, as a way to almost compliment someone, then retract immediately with a insult almost.
Assuming what I said above wasn't so much an insult as it was just being ghey...are "foot in mouth" moments like this easily over looked by you? Are they signs the guy is partially retarded?
Should I be working on changing that and keeping the compliment, dropping the follow up?
Cheers, Alex | |

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 6:41:36 PM | A "foot-in-mouth" comment is definitely easily overlooked, and can be good for a laugh between you and whoever you say it to. Sounds as if the comment you made was funny more than anything.
Besides, it doesn't sound as if what you said was too bad at all. Putting your foot in your mouth for sure, but nothing that could be considered rude or thoughtless. There's no law that says you have to give a girl who's wearing a sleeveless shirt at -30 your sweater CB. It's nice and chivalrous to do so, but you don't have to feel bad about it that you didn't think of it.
Work on it if you think you should, but you can always use making a follow-up comment like that after a compliment as something to laugh about when you do put your foot in your mouth.

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 6:42:56 PM | CB I don't why you should have given her your sweater......... Yeah, it would have been a kind gesture.
But.....
Did she not wear a coat out that evening? If she didn't then *shrug* she must have ice water in her veins.
No, I don't think you're "retarded" You tend to over analyze a bit and think too much but hey, that's you.
If someone would have said that to me I would have laughed. And if I'd gone out in that type of weather without a coat then who would have been thought to be not so bright? 'Eh?

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 6:53:21 PM | First off, you're in Winnipeg - its friggin' cold. I wouldn't worry about not giving that chick your sweater. She could have been prepared. Its not like a cold snap hit or she just took up smoking. Why should you freeze your ass off 'cuz a woman didn't dress for the weather... why be chivalrous (shiverless?) if she passes out from cold, you can run for help... remember smoking doesn't kill... hypothermia does.
Secondly, your gaffes are probably more in your mind than in others. We all magnify the dumbass things we say... I once told a Judge I drafted on the KISS theory... anyone who knows me knows open mouth insert foot, but I sincerely doubt that the Judge will remember me personally.
Maybe chicks think you're sweet, not bumbling... oops... heck. If you learn the art of verbal editing - post it.

Sounds as if the comment you made was funny more than anything.
It was never meant to be hurtful or insulting, more a tease...but...she didn't talk to me anymore after that...and when I tried with her...her friend pulled her onto the dance which is like a force field for me.
Did she not wear a coat out that evening?
Coat check
If someone would have said that to me I would have laughed. And if I'd gone out in that type of weather without a coat then who would have been thought to be not so bright? 'Eh?
She sorta laughed...but like in a "your such an ass" kind of way then walked away.

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 7:02:17 PM | I wouldn't worry about it really. Maybe its just nerves. Besides, she really should have went outdoors with something a little warmer on if she were that concerned.
I just realized this was the " Ask a Girl " part of the forum and I'm the third guy to respond in the thread. Oops..

Well, maybe some people are more sensitive than others. But really, like Clasact and Candid said, she should have worn a coat if she didn't want to freeze.

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 7:18:30 PM | Foot in mouth disease occurs when you realize that thing you thought was really important to say...isn't nearly as important to other people. You can cure it by thinking before acting (and what you should be thinking is, "am I going to have to explain what I'm doing?") and if that doesn't work, then explaining yourself less. Of course, the odds of accomplishing either, about one in.....
So, if you meet a woman who isn't a deep thinker, or is too wrapped up in herself, you may find...you're the only one who realizes where your foot went. Like someone else posted, roll with it. Don't try to impress so much, and when you goof, just laugh it off. That would show confidence, and hopefully she realizes that, hey, people make mistakes. Maybe you didn't hand over the sweater b/c you were too captivated by her, and maybe she'll find that sweet...if you deliver it correctly.
People tend to take a cue on how to treat us...by how we treat ourselves. Laugh it off, move on like its nothing...and she may follow the lead.

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 7:39:59 PM | LOL
I think it was funny...and would have thought it was cute and endearing.
If she's standing outside with no coat on CB...you sure she wasn't drunk and feeling no pain???
|
| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 7:41:58 PM | Concerning the sweater: She is probably well aware of the temperature and it is her choice to go out for a smoke.
Really, stop over analyzing every little thing you do and just "be"...

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 9:19:18 PM | At 30 below, you were probably blinded by the headlights. Your a funny guy from what I have seen in here, I am sure the people that know you, like that about you.
Seriously....how bright were those bad boys?....lol

Did someone bounce one of those volleyballs off your head today????
CB.. you know all I could think about while reading this is the many many posts you had last summer about attempting to catch the up skirt view while women are out and about in the summer and thinking of ALL the things you could have said this is nothing and actually kinda funny

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 9:27:44 PM | Because I've read some of your posts I truly believe that you are a decent guy. If she's a regular at a place you frequent I'm sure she realizes it too. Don't sweat it. Honestly she probably never gave it another thought. I don't think she'll be telling her g/f's "OMG you know that guy, the one at the bar? He said, he shoulda given me his sweater but then he woulda been cold. Can you believe what an inconsiderate jerk he is". Don't sweat the small stuff.
Ummm hey how come your profile says you're not a smoker but you were outside when it was -30 smoking????????

Fairly bright...not quite blinding though...not that I care...I don't subscribe to the theory "anything more than a handful is a waste".
However I also believe good things come in small packages.

| Will you pull my foot out of my mouth? Posted: 1/4/2009 9:49:53 PM | I'd think it's funny, especially if you had said it with a smile on your face - a tease.
But then I like to tease and I've gotten quite fond of the taste of show leather ;-)
If there's an elephant in the room, then I believe in introducing it. Meaning, if I put my foot in my mouth I would probably follow up with pointing it out : "could you help me pull that foot out of my mouth - the sole is kind of stuck." Breaks the ice and kind of puts us on the same level as everybody puts their foot into their mouth at one time or another.
