| Aimee Mann Posted: 1/18/2009 8:08:52 AM | | Back a few years ago, I saw a film called "Magnolia." It's various dramatic story lines were based in part on the songs of Aimee Mann, and indeed her music is throughout the film. We bought the soundtrack and then I got just about her whole discography from her website. I caught a video of her on Youtube where Aimee plays the role of Scrooge in a Christmas Carol, telling band mates to suck it up and tour. I realized she had sung "Voices Carry" which Prince had written for, gack, Cindy Lauper. So glad Aimee did the song instead. Aimee later redid the tune much, much slower and more depressed sounding. I don't know, I really dig that woman's music. Not all the time, otherwise I'd have to slit my wrists. Ha ha ha. | |

The 'Til Tuesday album that has "Voice's Carry" has a much better song called "Winning the War" which I constatly play all the time.
She also has a great cameo/line in Buffy the Vampire Slayer saying how much she hates playing vampire towns.

| Aimee Mann Posted: 2/6/2009 1:58:53 PM | If you like Aimee Mann, might I also suggest Michael Penn, if you don't already know about him.
He not only has a double "n" in his last name, but he also has a similar music and writing style to boot. Of course, she's married to the guy so I'm sure they influence each other that way, but they both were pretty similar even before they started collaborating. I've always been more of a Penn fan than a Mann fan, and was into Penn before Mann started making a name for herself, but they both have the ability to give me goosebumps.
He also happens to be Sean Penn's brother. You know... the one that ISN'T dead.
