| Google: this site may harm your computer...on every search?? Posted: 1/31/2009 7:16:27 AM | Ok recently I have been getting the 'this site may harm your computer' on google searches, which redirects me to another google page.
Now every search and result comes up with 'this site may harm your computer' no matter what...bbc home page for example.
Use another search engine and it's fine. Which I dont mind doing to be honest. Just curious...
Any idea what is causing this.
Appologies if covered on another thread

| Google: this site may harm your computer...on every search?? Posted: 1/31/2009 8:02:23 AM | I had this happen this morning, too, when I was checking on a reputable news source. When that page came up that said, "This site may be harmful to your computer", I exited out right away without clicking on anything.
I checked what I had typed in my search, realized I had only put in one set of quotation marks. Tried it again and was able to get to the news site.

Are you saying that, every time you try and search something on Google, you get that error message and it redirects you to another Google site? If so, what Internet browser are you using? Also, you should clear your cookies and temporary files as well as cache and any other garbage like that, then try and do a Google search, making sure that you typed the URL correctly.

| Google: this site may harm your computer...on every search?? Posted: 2/6/2009 3:19:45 PM | The problem looks like it was a google thing anyway.
Why though if that site is known to carry malware why would google offer it as a search results option?
Also, since when did google decide that it wants a nanny state on the internet, shouldn't it just stick to being a search engine and not tell me what I can or can't look at??

| Google: this site may harm your computer...on every search?? Posted: 2/6/2009 3:27:16 PM | | Actually, Google is a search engine and therefor, results include all types of websites, even those that are not legit. That is what a search engine basically is and in some places, for instance, China, search engine providers like Yahoo and perhaps even Google, have restrictions on search results. An example of this is in China, if you type in Christianity, it will just shut down your computer. | |

This isnt about if it is a legal web site, it is wether the website that google is recomending, in their opinion, will 'harm' my computer. Not sure what that actually means...lol, is it going to burst into flames, hardly, it might 'try' to place some malware on my pc or something equally silly but why is google deciding this? usually some coding error on the web site is usually at fault.
People with websites pay google A LOT OF MONEY to come up on the first page of a google search.

| Google: this site may harm your computer...on every search?? Posted: 2/6/2009 4:55:58 PM | | Actually, that is not always the case. I don't think Google censors anything in North America, and people don't always pay Google to be on the first page...it also depends on what type of metatags you use on your site, so Google can find it easily and put you as part of the results for the search. | |

Bullshit. They can block stuff, but they cannot actually shutdown your computer unless there your system has been majorly compromised by government malware.

Posted: 4/22/2009 1:27:36 AM | Google does offer the service of blocking suspicious websites if you register an account (which is free) and set your preferences accordingly. However they aren't always right in their detection algorithms, though it is reliable most of the time.
The thing about yahoo and google shutting down your computer is a load of crap that sounds like it originated from ignorance about how computers actually communicate through a web browser. Maybe in windows 95/98/me or even xp pre-sp1 that would be possible, but not after all the stuff they've tossed in since then, it'd trip a warning that you'd have to confirm for it to actually shut your pc down. That is of course assuming your not running a web browser as the admin (which vista and windows 7 wont allow you to do without knowing your doing it in the first place).

| Google: this site may harm your computer...on every search?? Posted: 4/26/2009 2:53:55 AM | I use google every day and no problems here, if you're open to suggestions you can consider the following ( I do Home/Business Computer/Network stuff for a living) Summary: Get Firefox- http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ >Use firefox instead of internet explorer (a couple nice optional add-ons are NoScript & Redirect Remover) Get MBAM- http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and either Spywareblaster- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html -or- Spybot- http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html then Run Windows Update-or-switch to Linux ;)
Explanation: I bet you're using internet explorer (internet exploder), try firefox (by Mozilla) as your primary browser and download MBAM from Malewarebytes along with either Spybot (safer-networking) -or- spywareblaster, and use them both (they are all free & effective) Spybot/Spywareblaster have the option to immunize your browsers (including IE) from known bad stuff and it's important that you UPDATE & RUN them at least 1time a week. -Your computer is likely infected, I recommend a Windows Update after doing a complete scan w/MBAM & Other *Spywareblaster is easier to use for the average person but I personally think Spybot is more effective and if you do choose to use Spybot, avoid the Advanced Options unless you really know what you are doing ( you can break Windows if you dont know what you are doing in the Advanced Section)
Avast is a nice free antivirus if you don't have one already -or- if you're using Nortons expired free trial (FYI: Not protected on expired Norton and imho norton should be sued for coming preinstalled as a trial version on every new computer and make it a royal pain to uninstall) -For paid security, I think ZoneAlarm Security Suite and Kaspersky Sec. Suite are excellent (Do not install 2 separate Antivirus Programs on your PC, they will conflict with each other and become less effective as a result. You can install more than 1 AntiSpyware Program on your PC and I actually recommend using at least 2 because I have yet to find a single one that picks up everything, so have a primary & secondary but don't run a scan with both at the same time)
There is always Linux when you guys get tired of messing around with windows and pouring money into it like there's no tomorrow. -a good starter distro is Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/

I did not say that just because of ignorance, because I don't live in China or have anything against Chinese people. You guys seem to be very sensitive.
