| Country music Posted: 1/31/2009 7:45:19 PM | I'm just curious as to how many people in the Northwest Florida region are country music fans. There must be some due to the fact that concerts are usually sold out! However, most people I know can't stand it, and it would be nice to talk with some people who love country as much as I do!

| Country music Posted: 2/1/2009 7:00:07 AM | Most of my family listens to Country music. But personally I can't stand most of it. Sure there is the occasional song that I like, but that can be said for almost any genre.
What I don't like about country: 1. The same chords over and over 2. The same lyrics over and over 3. The fact that it's so damn easy to sing (IMHO, there is no such thing as a GREAT country singer) 4. The annoying little yodel thing that most of the male singers do with their voice when singing. 5. The slow songs (like "Feed Jake" by Confederate Railroad and "The Walk" by Sawyer Brown) are mostly depressing while the upbeat songs (like "Watermelon Crawl" by God knows who and "Chattahoochee" by Allen Jackson) are mostly retarded. 6. Much like rap, it rips off good Rock & Roll songs and ruins them. Here are a few examples.
a. "Mercury Blues" Allen Jackson ripped off the Steve Miller Band b. "Lips of an Angel" Jack Ingram ripped off Hinder c. "Don't Want To Miss A Thing" Mark Chestnut ripped off Aerosmith d. "Hurt" Johnny Cash ripped off Nine Inch Nails (in fact every song on the album was a ripp off) e. "Landslide" The Dixie Chicks ripped off Fleetwood Mac f. "Take It Easy" Travis Tritt ripped off The Eagles g. "I'll Stand By You" Carrie Underwood ripped off the Pretenders h. "Suspicious Minds" Dwight Yoakam ripped off Elvis i. "Shine" Dolly Parton ripped of Collective Soul j. "We've Got Tonight" Kenny Rogers ripped off Bob Seager k. "Desarado" Clint Black ripped off the Eagles l. "Dead Or Alive" Cris Cagle ripped off Bon Jovi
The list goes on and on, but I'll stop there for fear of boring the readers. In the end, there is nothing that I like about country music as a whole, even though I can occasionally find a diamond in the rough.
Unoriginality = suck ass

| Country music Posted: 2/1/2009 7:11:30 AM | | And to the guy above my last post, have you never heard of a cover? | |
|
| Country music Posted: 2/1/2009 8:49:51 AM | And to the guy above my last post, have you never heard of a cover? Sure. But who pays $45 or more for a ticket to see a cover band? The occasional cover song is cool. But with Country and Hip Hop, it's like an epidemic.
I don't feel any different when a Rock band starts covering a bunch of songs. Like Pearl Jam. I wouldn't waste my money on them any more. Sure, they had an album called "Covers" which is one thing. But what about all the songs they tried to pull off before that album that was covers. They desecrated everyone from Cat Stephens to the Beatles, and even the Cavaliers.

| Country music Posted: 2/1/2009 9:03:25 AM | Country was part of RNR till chet atkins became RCA's A&R man in 57 and tunred a roots music in to POP crap and made BILLIONS for his masters. Not a fan of it but saw Hank Wiliams III..CD in the 1.99. Crazy and his Gand PA and rocks harder than most RnR bands.
By the way most Jazz guys do covers
|
| Country music Posted: 2/1/2009 1:59:39 PM | | for any who would like to know i just went to the Chili Cookoff at C.B. Smith Park Kiss 99.9 County radio station and saw Allan jackson, Jessica Simpson, Little Big Town Justin Moore and another singer. But my favorite is kenny Chesney and Toby Keith, and who ever puts on a concert show. | |
|
| Country music Posted: 2/2/2009 3:09:22 AM | By the way most Jazz guys do covers There is a difference, IMO, between covers and standards. Standards are songs that virtually every band has played at some point. Not to mention that there's not much genre crossing with standards. If a song is considered a jazz standard, then you can pretty much bet that the song started out as jazz. The same can be said for most blues standards.
But I do see your point even though I don't think they are one in the same.
But to get back to Country music as a whole, I was taken to a higher level of disgust with Country music after 9-11 when seemingly every country music star had to capitalize on the tragedy by writing a patriotic song and selling it for millions. But the worst part is that they don't even get their facts straight in many of them. A good example is "Have You Forgotten" by Darryl Worley. In the first verse even, he claimed that we didn't get to keep our land by "backing down". Of course not. We got it by slaughtering millions of Native Americans. He also goes on to justify the war (which we all know is primarily in Iraq, and has been since 2 months after 9-11) by talking about Bin Laden and Al Qaida's attack on 9-11. But experts on the war can tell you that America has done more to spread Al Qaida throughout the Middle East than get rid of them. Before we went to war with Iraq, there was no known Al Qaida forces in Iraq. But now there are Al Qaida forces in Iraq. Yes...that fight was well worth it.
Then you have Toby Keith with "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue". He brags about lighting up the sky of Iraq. Once again, we have the problem that it's no Iraq that caused 9-11, but we also have an American icon promoting the idea that the death of more than 80,000 Iraqi civilians due to the use of missiles is somehow not only good, but cool as hell. Idiot!!!
Thank God for that one Dixie Chicks song that they did with Pink. I think it was called "Hey Mr. President".

| Country music Posted: 2/2/2009 4:02:39 AM | Well, apparently all you RnR people just really can't read... probably too busy staying stoned... regardless, I think the OP was pretty clear in her opening post when she said:
However, most people I know can't stand it, That would be people like you so most likely the OP has already heard all of your bashings which is why she very clearly stated:
and it would be nice to talk with some people who love country as much as I do! Which, obviously is not ya'll.

| Country music Posted: 2/2/2009 5:18:51 AM | While I'm not a huge fan of some modern 'pop' country, the classic artists are just fine......& I'm smart enough to know that both country AND rock are ripping of the same sources: Delta Blues & Appalachian Folk.
Arguably, Country has been around longer than Rock (at least in it's Western incarnation) & has a more direct lineage to that early gold mine of Po' Folks music.
|
| Country music Posted: 2/2/2009 5:57:11 AM | It's strange how people can appreciate other's points of view and this applies also to the music industry. At the Grammy's, you'll notice all clapping for every winner no matter what catagory they win. They are all artists.
Now, we have a poster that professses to know all about music, but, cannot stray away from his own selfish form to appreciate other forms. May you find a way to stay in your small world and surround yourself with your small group. Build a wall. Will keep all other artists that might even appreciate your form of art. Yes, build a wall.
Now, to the OP. Do you realize that you are in Milton? Milton is considered "LA"....Lower Alabama!!! I spent 15 years in FWB and retired there. You are not getting out and about LOL. There are plenty of places and people who like country music. Only problem with where you live is that it's a dry county. Make a trip down I-10 to either Crestview of P'Cola and you'll find country music. Down Fla 87 might land you at the Holiday Inn in Navarre Beach and they sometimes have bands playing country music.

Very well said C!
My Dad listened to opera while my mother was in to Loretta Lynn, Eddie Arnold etc. My older brothers rocked with Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Penguins etc. while I found MY first rock and roll song (magic carpet ride) in 1968.
I have, over the years, come to like many, many forms of music but I always stay true to my core roots which is country. Some singers I just dont like (alan jackson, shania twain) while others have some great songs that simply can not be duplicated anywhere else in any other genre.
There is probably more country music in north FL than in SE... there is one country bar down here where people wear polo shirts (not any kind of country bar I have ever seen) and one radio station that plays non-stop commercials!

| Country music Posted: 2/2/2009 5:03:02 PM | | I use to live in the Pensacola area of Northwest Florida. Many of the people I knew there were into country music. As for myself, I like it as well as other types of music but really had more fun dancing to it. Moved to the Pensacola area from Dallas TX where country was really big from the Two Step or Three Step to the Cotton Eye Joe, I loved it all. I tend to like the more, what I consider, modern country, like Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn, Sawyer Brown and others. Down where I am now (New Port Richey) the only country is line dancing. | |
|
| Country music Posted: 2/5/2009 5:02:14 PM | | I loathe country music...can't stand it. However the whole cover thing, I can deal with. No matter who is covering the song, if it's done well and maybe with a new spin, it's all good. It's like remakes of movies...or movies based on a tv show...or a tv show here based on one in Great Britain. Happens in all mediums....not just music. | |
|
| Country music Posted: 2/6/2009 3:58:23 AM | and it would be nice to talk with some people who love country as much as I do! Which, obviously is not ya'll. But she never said that she would ONLY talk to people who love country.
And hey, I may not like country music, but at least I know how to spell "y'all".

Wow, someone's low self esteem is showing. May want to zip that thing up.
I would love for you to show me where anyone in this thread has professed "to know all about music". I would like you to also point out what that poster's own "selfish form" of music that he can't "stray away from to appreciate other forms" actually is. If you can't do this, then your argument is completely invalid since you are only making assumptions.
I for one, not only listen to many types of music, but also play many types of music. Some of what I like includes different forms of rocks such as alternative, adult alternative, progressive, indie, grunge, and more. I also like many forms of jazz including west coast and east coast styles, dixieland, and lounge. Classical is another favorite of mine (John Williams, Bach, Tchaikovsky, etc.). I also like reggae, ska, punk, new wave, tribal, Brazilian, Celtic, and many more.
...........But country just doesn't do it for me.
|
| Country music Posted: 2/6/2009 5:50:44 AM | Go read your own dang posts earlier. I don't know a thing about music. I know that my parents did not like Elvis or the Beatles. I know I don't like Hip Hop (Rap). That does not mean that they are not music. Music is to the ear of the person receiving. You have cut down country music and might have just pissed off a few people including me. The lady (OP) asked where, not your opinion. You know what they say about opinions. You sure have a "big" one.
One more thing. Who performed "Desperado" first? Janis or the Eagles?
Also, Toby's song was not about Iraq. Man, you are smoking something I don't want to smoke.
|
| Country music Posted: 2/6/2009 3:26:01 PM |
One more thing. Who performed "Desperado" first? Janis or the Eagles? Since Glenn Frey and Don Henley wrote the song, I would say that the Eagles performed it first. But even if Janis had performed it first, Clint Black would have still been ripping off Rock and Roll. So it's really a moot point.
By the way, Chris LeDoux also coverd it.
|
| Country music Posted: 2/6/2009 3:42:31 PM | Also, Toby's song was not about Iraq. Man, you are smoking something I don't want to smoke. I do apologies about this inaccuracy. After listening to the song more closely, I realize that it really never makes any reference to Iraq. But there are still many other reasons for me not to like it. One reason would be the line "We'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way". What?
Also, I think it's ironic for a man who has never served in the armed forces or displayed any other method of "justice serving" to say: "Justice will be served And the battle will rage This big dog will fight When you rattle his cage"
I think we can all consider 9-11 to be a pretty big "cage rattling". So why did Toby choose to shamelessly make millions off the tragedy instead of suiting up and signing up to serve his country in some way. Did that "big dog" have too many bills to pay? The phrase "All bark. No bite." comes to mind here.
|
| Country music Posted: 2/6/2009 5:38:53 PM | | Maybe you just don't understand what he's saying. Now, as for the military, I approve of him. Of course, my 21 years in the USAF might have some weight. Now, can you say anything bad about Lee Greenwood? | |
|
| Country music Posted: 2/7/2009 3:41:51 PM | Ah, Lee Greenwood. "Proud to Be and American" was a good song. The context was great. That was the only song, outside of the National Anthem and the Marines Hymn that we got to hear in Boot camp.
He came to my area last year in concert and one of the local radio stations got him to sing it on the air. It was horrid. I he hit a sour note about every third word. Fortunately, some friends of mine who went to the concert said he did a great job there.
I can only imagine that they had some really poor quality monitoring system in the radio studio that resulted in his foul rendition.
That song is indeed one of the "diamonds in the rough" that I was referring to at the beginning of this thread.
|
| Country music Posted: 2/7/2009 4:26:17 PM | | I have not seen Lee in over a year. He does not perform well without his band. Of course, he is getting up in age and hard for him to hit all the notes of yesteryear's voice. BTW, since I'm Cajun, what do you think of Cajun or Zyedico? My son plays 5 different instruments and I can't hold a tune on anything. I only listen and find joy in different types of music. It's my ears that enjoy it. | |
|
| Country music Posted: 2/9/2009 3:11:17 PM | I like Cajun music as a nostalgic ambiance more than just music to sit around and listen to. With that said, I really do like some Cajun music, just not quite enough to go out and buy the CD's (even though I do have some downloaded). I really like some stuff from Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. They have a great sound and the singer has a really nice voice.
As far as Zydeco goes, it's a bit too polka-esque for my taste. In fact, I would consider most of it to be a near perfect combination of Polka and Dixieland Jazz. And while I love many types of Jazz, Dixieland is by far my least favorite form. And I've never had a strong stomach for Polka.
So I guess that would be a thumbs up for Cajun and a thumbs down for Zydeco.

I'm just curious as to how many people in the Northwest Florida region are country music fans. - original OP
I'd have to say that I am NOT a 'fan' per say, but like MOST music, I enjoy certain songs, certain artists, and different aspects of most ALL music!
THIS will 'date' me, but I remember YEARS ago going to see Olivia Newton John (who was JUST becoming known as a 'crossover' artist) and I had to WADE through George Jones and Conway Twitty BEFORE she performed! I remember being MORTIFIED and calling my mother the next day to tell her the 'ghastly' experience that I had just had since moving to Memphis!! I think one of the songs was 'Country Bumpkin' *** GRIN***
However - just GOES to show you....looking back.....that I WAS indeed not particularly 'open-minded'!! NOW - I listen to ALL kinds of music - and I don't judge based on whether it is 'classified' as country, contemporary, pop, etc.! I either LIKE it or I DON'T like it! It's kind of like ART!! ........In the 'eyes' or the 'ears' of the BEHOLDER!
