Is my profile too weird for plenty of fish?
Posted: 2/6/2009 9:57:38 PM
I'm a few standard deviations off of the norm in personality and I believe my profile reflects this and the kind of woman I'm looking for. So I ask, is my profile too out there? I don't want to water down my profile because I think that would a) be deceptive and b) not be conducive to attracting the kind of woman I want. However if I'm too atypical for this site, I'd like to know that.

Evaluate my words, pretty please.

It's very well written and I imagine it explains exactly who you are to the right person. But I'm guessing you're somewhat atypical and probably don't get many responses.

I think you're best bet is to dumb it down a little. Either that or start posting in the Science/Philosophy forum and dazzle the women there with your brilliance and wit.

A very good profile in deed, I found it entertaining. You absolutely have to find several synonyms for "geek". You overuse geek even for the geekish in taste. Maybe a few variations, like "supergeek", "a classical geek philosopher", "El Geeko", etc.

This, however, I don't buy:

"And finally regarding regarding the elephant in the room, I require a friends first dating process with a slowly developing relationship resulting in a strong emotional connection before sex. I categorically refuse to deal with the Oxytocin headslap of physical intimacy unless I'm already strongly attached on an intellectual and emotional level."

If what you wrote in this quoted paragraph is true indeed, then you're not only not a human male, but you're not even a male biological protoplasm of any earthly species. You are a... a... I don't know. Alien? Robot? Automaton?

But don't change it, because women are not men, and they might buy this. In that case they'll be on their guard even the more, for signs that you might be gay. Or else they'll be happy to write to their mothers, "I finally found a real gentleman. Oh, Mom, I could die, I did not know real gentlemen were so cute." It will be a bit harder to keep up the lie on the long run, like beyond the third hour or of the second date with a tall, willowy blonde, a Cheryl Patterson look-alike, but that's a risk you're willing to take I take.

Dear Bec -- I LOVE your profile. I want John Cusack to play you in his next film. If you lived on my coast, I would definitely contact you. I have a degree in English, so I am a critical reader, and aside from one or two typos (only shows you're human), your description of yourself and your needs cannot be misconstrued.

That being said, I've made a living in technology (the English thing was just for fun), am an NPR junkie, and love to learn. I put credence in the intelligence of Myers-Briggs -- used for years, it's still one of the best tools out there.

Leave your profile alone! The right woman will stumble across it, and she will be as special as you are.

Take care,
Leigh

I just read your profile cuz I was looking at your libido post, and I happen to think you are super-cool! =)

I can relate to a lot of it because I'm an INTP too. Yeah, the SJs freak me out. S is usually boring, unless they can wield their knowledge of complicated systems in order to create new systems, i.e. for games, LARPs, software development, building projects, sociological critical thinking, organizing large companies in a single bound, etc. The Js just plain freak me out, and give themselves too few choices. And want to give ME too few choices! Stupid and boring! Run away, indeed.

I think you'll do well on here and find someone who will appreciate you and like you for who you are! There are lots of different folks here. It's not easy being us, but I think we're pretty special!

I would take out or rewrite the first sentence, unless it's an absolute deal breaker for you. Its a turn off to most women.

I would also shorten the writing. You have one minute to catch their attention, & if you fail to do so, you lose them.

I wouldn't use "geek" so many times. There are a lot of repeated information in your writing, which is unnecessary.

Well, here's my two cents---exactly what it is worth!

I wouldn't say that your profile is weird in any way. Your profile clearly states who you are and what you're looking for. What's weird about that?

But I would condense it for two reasons:

1) The Twitter culture has shortened the world's attention span. Get you message across quickly. You can check mine for a fairly brief example.

2) Don't give sooo much information right away. Everyone likes to peel the onion.

There's my 2 cents. And you'll get your money back if you're not satisifed!

Yeah - let the elephant keep hiding in plain sight.

Other than that, you know what you're looking for and she'll like what you have to say.

Cheers.
