Should Ronnie biggs be a free man now?

Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs will be released from prison this summer.
The wheelchair-bound lag is expected to get parole in July/August.

It means Biggs, who can’t speak or walk after a series of strokes ,will be a FREE man in time for his 80th birthday. Parole and police officers looked at two private nursing homes in north London to inspect their suitability for the robber when he gets out.

What do you think? The man who helped steal 2.6mil (even though he was a minor part of it) escaped jail, got a new identity, had plastic surgery, escaped from Australia, managed to make money off his name in Brazil.

I think his a legend and should go free, and I hope his health allows him to see his 80th birthday although I doubt he will get that pint of bitter he wants in a margate pub!

No, crime is crime no matter what age he is.
He enjoyed his youth on the money that he stole and his notoriety.
Now he's old and not in the best of health, he has served his time and quite rightly so.

I don't wish the man any harm, but people must remember that the guard died.

I believe firmly in justice and abhor injustice...why should he go free?

But...there are far worse criminals getting much lighter sentences these days some would argue Biggs has served his sentence and its time to let him free.

yes I beleive he should go free, he has learnt his lesson by now and is surely not going to be doing anyone any harm.
Infact keeping him in prison would be a waste of money and giving him the chance to experience the world again before he passes away could be benefitial.
My father experienced prison life for 4 weeks and found it terrible that old people who cannot cause any harm because of their condition where being kept in. Not only did my father get a long with them but he also saw them for what they have become after all these years of prison life.
Infact the world has changed for these people so coming out into the world can be a scary thought for them.

Biggs should be left rot in prison without the medical treatment which was his only reason for returning to the UK in the first place.

well said vwulme.

Maybe sentences are lighter these days but thats no excuse to let off a man who had a sentence back then and adsconded.

I was attacked at knifepoint back in July in my previous job and the druggy had been let out on day release and he went into hiding. God knows how many other evil deeds the scumbag did before they caught him.

If you break the law, you should serve the full sentence.

After all they won't be among the pentioners to freeze to death because they cant afford the heat their homes. Plus they get 3 square meals a day and a doctor to see them when they need it.

He should be set free in my opinion. He is not a danger to society and with the lack of prison places at the moment common sense should prevail.

He's certainly not a threat to society, that much is obvious. I think at 80 and having served 10 years , its probably the right time to release him. I don't see any good in keeping him locked up any further.

I agree except that I believe he should receive the medical help he needs...

He lived the life of Riley in Brazil and had his freedom for years while the others in the gang served long, long jail terms....

He should serve the same amount of years as the others did as they are all guilty causing a mans premature death....

Maybe Ronnie is proof that Karma exists........it gets you in the end.

Some may say that in death there is hope.

But there are many people in Londons west end who lament the days of the old fashioned underworld, and i can understand there logic to some degree.
They will point out that during those times if some toe-rag burgled someone defenceless they would be delt with by the Krays and there goods returned as well as any damage paid for.
As the old prison saying goes- if you can't do the time don't do the crime.
In Biggs case he took the chance of escaping and in doing so he lived the prime of his life in Brazil and elswere so i would imagine that he can not have any complaints about paying for that when he is so restricted by what he can do in his last knockings.

Before you judge a man try walking in his shoes.......
ok he managed to get away and live a life of luxury after he did his crime, but he has also served his time. Unless you have experienced his life or know him well, or experienced the prison system then you haven't really got a good view on life and have a bias opinion.

If the thieves ha not stopped the train, the man wouldn't of died, but I dont think we can punish a man for his death as it was not intentional.

The locomotive fireman Dave Parr went to call the signalman only to find the telephone cables had been cut. Upon returning to the train, he was thrown down the embankment of the railway track.

Stan Agate's participation in the robbery was Ronnie Biggs's only task and when it became obvious that they were useless they were banished to the waiting ex-army truck to help load the mail bags.

He didn't really play much of a part, he was a silly young lad who wanted to get rich quick.

I reassert my point the family of the man whose death he was involved in have no parole. Having been a victim of crime, my experience is the support for victims is in the voluntary sector, bless them, while the amounts of money time and expertise that is thrown at the Ba$tards that commit the crime seems to grow and grow.

Not just my opinion, but that of the police who dealt with my case.

If you don't want to go to prison then don't commit the crime

My father went to prison...he didn't commmit the crime, but served 4 weeks.
The family of the "victim" where behind us.
He saw first hand experience of the lives of those in Ronnie Biggs situation, not only has my father served more than 15yrs in the forces but is also a highly accomplished IT technitian.
I should think he has a better view on it.

In that case then none of us, including you, should dare to give an opinion one way or the other in this thread.
And nore should anyone who holds the responsibility of granting him his freedom be allowed to make any choice at all!!!

This is a man that committed a crime, then went on the run until he needed medical help, so 'turned himself in', right??

In a word, no... he should be left to serve the sentence that was issued to him. Seems he will have only served a third of it if he is released early, which is a lot less than most serve (disregarding the length of sentence). So, he should remain behind bars to serve at least half his time.

He played a part and then served only 2 years before going over a prison wall... The others stayed and did their time....He came back in 2001 but only because he could get better medical care here in the UK.. So he has served a total of max 9 years to date....How many years did the others serve...for their part in the crime, however big or small their part was?

I know of people who have been given longer prison terms for burglary of commercial premises ...NO weapons ,no one assaulted or killed so why should he be any different?

Had he stayed in prison and served 9 years way back then ...I would say hey ho he has done his time ...maybe let him have his parole...

But he thought he was cleverer than the system....His time to pay back what he owes society........

Exactly-There lies the flaw in your reasoning that as we have not walked in his shoes then no one should comment.
PS
Personally i have no real opinion about him being released or not.
But was he not expected to have had only a very short time to live about 6 years ago or so and on that basis they fought for his release back then?
I have read many gangster bio's and autobiogrophies-his included.
Probably too many becouse ive been scratching my head trying to remember the details of his past criminal record.
But i guess it was quite substancial.
