Does your religion or superstition prevent you from donating? Do you care? Are you giving it all to science?
Posted: 2/26/2009 10:53:33 AM
I'm an organ donator, BUT I'm very superstitious about donating my eyes. If there is a life hereafter, I don't want to be blind (as silly as that sounds). I WILL NOT donate my entire body to science because I just don't feel comfortable having med/science students staring and probing me after death.

Does your religion or superstition prevent you from donating? Do you care? Are you giving it all to science?

This has always been a topic that I have questioned in my own life.....I dont have any disorders, illnesses, or diseases......what will sience do with me? Although I am fairly young yet, maybe that will change if I do contract or end up with any of the above.

I am a blood donner, stem cell and marrow donner if ever need be.
I am also working on becoming a live donner for whatever need be........I have been healthy and tried to take care of what I have , so why not give back. I have also thought about plastinization as well....but the chances of that happening are few....as for medical science after death....I would like to donate what ever is left.....so that someone else can have a second chance.

I think that only if my body has something that science has never encountered or needs investigation and research would I donate to medical science.

Hopefully I get the chance to make those choices......

Kudos to any and all that will give up a portion of there body to save another.

Blood donors are exemplary, every 60 or so days, off they go to get their cookies and milk after getting stuck and drained!

Organs or a bit tougher, with some of them, you know you aren't coming back to see life as we knew it! BUT, someone will see life in a new way, either with a healthier heart, lung or with a renewed sight.

There are some of us that would love to be able to do this, but because of certain illness contracted at an early age, are unable to give any part of their body, and of course then no blood. So we find other ways to "give".

The hereafter, or being reincarnated would mean giving up our bodies as we know them. The bible says that we will be made whole and therefore not need the needs of this earth. Won't that be nice!

Choice, a small word with a huge meaning at times, and if the choice is made to donate, just think of the joy you will pass on to the recipient.

and to those that do it without needing compensation.

When I’m dead I’m not going to need any bodily parts, so I’ve specified that they can take whatever they need. But I have to agree with Sammy ... I don’t want to be a medical cadaver!

I’ve always wanted to donate blood, but I’ve never been able to meet the minimum weight requirement so they won’t even consider me.

When I am gone I hope anything useable get's used, otherwise burn the rest. The body is just a vessel and once I have passed on I will not need it anymore.

im not giving anything to anyone.
why would i want to prolong the suffering of someone else?
why would i want to give freely of my organs so that some dr can sell it to someone who may or may not need it?
i dont care if i do or dont need them in the afterlife or whatever you c alled it
. call me selfish but really.i dont give a crap if someone else needs my organs i dont use. they were mine and they will remain mine
if i let them start harvesting my organs now, whos to say they wont find a way to off me in order to harvest thema lil prematurely.
we are given one set of organs to live with, take care of em or die
thats your only option
if my organs fail me , i aint sittin on some list waiting for another one, and every day thereafter to be addicted to some non-rejection drugs, extra surgeries etc etc. screw that . they can just put me to sleep and get it over with.
i dont care if its a baby , a teenager or an old person , i aint giving any part of my anatomy to anyone but the ground. after im dead, i really wont care about anyone or anything so why would i want to help anyone after my death?
PLEASE Touch -----> my organ! (gals) LOL

Here, here Trub! I agree with most of what you say myself, but a couple small differences. For openers, yup, I ain't about to cling to life on fancy machines and such. In fact, once I overheard the prognosis following my accident, (in one of my rare, brief, only semi-cloudy states) I made up my mind that I wasn't gonna live like that and if need be, I'd take care of it myself. (I was supposed to be the one-legged guy strapped to a wheelchair with a drool-bucket attached. luckily I almost heal like a starfish)

Also, I don't sign anything saying my parts are there for the taking after I'm done with them. Like you say, who's to say that they might not harvest them a tad prematurely if ya put your name on such a list. Heck, the way the world's going, they might not even need said piece of paper one day. (if it's even absolutely necessary now for those with enough money)

However, I do feel that once I'm ACTUALLY done with them, I have no problem with somebody using the pieces that're still useful if they can as it really doesn't bother me if the worms hafta get by with a little less vittles and like I said, I'd be done with them. I just hope it doesn't become a corrupt money thing one day. (yeah right)

Not a religious person here so I believe that once this body "shuts off" it becomes a bit of many things. (grass, trees, worms, critters, dungheaps, dirt, eventually rocks, etc.) Like I said, "I'm done with it".

WOW! I figured this day would come eventually, if not already occuring once in a blue moon. I never suspected it could already be a huge industry itself.

Be happening "just around the corner" before we know it by the sounds of things.

Creditability of this source, or at least some of them is a tad iffy though

I'd be scared to actually!!

I imagine they are pretty quick to remove the useful parts, what if I'm not REALLY dead yet and my heart's going to start beating again in a few minutes????

When I kick the bucket I won't be needing any of my organs so why not let someone else use them if the organs are in decent shape. If I live a long life and the only thing my body is good for is medical research then they can have it for that. You're dead. You'r gone. Why not do something good with your body.

As for the possibility of maybe needing an organ, I don't think anyone can say for sure what they would feel until someone tells you you are going to die. Troub .... do you think you would still feel the same about receiving an organ if you had a wonderful women in your life and a couple of young children that need you?

If you want more info about donating eyes-or part of the eye-the Lions' eye bank does lots of this work. They will take just the cornea which is in great demand and there are good prosthetics available.

Turn this around...

What is your child, your parent, your sister or brother was disagnosed with a disease in which a transplant could save their life?

How do you feel about organ donation now?

I have signed my card. But Trubble, while I don't agree with the sentiment, is absolutely correct about one small detail that you aren't made aware of when you sign that card.

If you are in an accident and unconcious, they still have that right to take your organs. If you are in a coma, they can take your organs. While you are legally alive, they cannot take anything that would change that but could take a lung or kidney if needed while you're in that coma. Nowhere does it say you have to be deceased before they have the right, signed over by you, to harvest your bits.

Something to ponder. I've signed mine with full knowledge. If I can help someone who wants to stay alive do so, then super!

I'm of the mind that when I'm not using it anymore someone else might as well. I've told my family my wishes. I make sure my kids know what I want...I sing the old Johnny Prine song to them "Please don't bury me down in the cold cold ground, I'd rather have them cut me up and pass me all around. Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes, and the deaf can take both my ears if they don't mind the size".

There was a time when I had signed my donor card, but was unwilling to give my body to medical science, I've since changed my mind. I really really don't care what happens to my body once I'm done with it. If med students can learn by dissecting me - have at it! Besides, funerals are expensive. Why would I want my loved ones to spend all that cha-ching on a dead person?

If I'm dead, I don't need my body. If my organs can allow someone quality of life, or life itself, then they can have at them.

I was unaware of the specifics involved in signing the donor card though. Of course the idea of someone getting at them even if I'm not dead is scary! Also, I don't like the idea of donating anything for scientific research purposes.

My one question always have been:
If we all mean to die, why should we still save a life ? Who cannot live without who - that particular someone ? If I should die for a failed kidney it should be no different than to die instantly in an accident with no chance and no need for an organ implanted? I am sure my children would just have to survive and live without me even I died during their young age.
Remember Erma Bombeck? She has the privilege to jump ahead of the wait list for a kidney transplant, but she declined the offer for she knew no one life should be more precious than the other.

My second question: how do they know the organs they took would immediate suit those who are waiting? Would it possible that even the organs were not completely matched, the doctor transplanted it anyway ( so not to waste the piece of organ ), and leave the luck to the patients and resulting them in more sufferings ?

But a time ago, I did say I want to donate my organ after I died, I am now somewhat change my mind. Maybe I will donate only my corneas , so that someone can see. There was news couple days ago about a 72 years old woman donated her corneas and gave sight to a young man.

I don't know. In the movie 7 Pounds, everything seems to work out just perfectly. lol

Something that at first, seems like one of the greatest acts of benevolence does give reason for pause when given all the things to consider.

Alright people. Stop your whining and worrying and just learn to beat the system. Be proactive.

I fully intend to destroy my body so my organs will be of no use to anyone.

Starting tomorrow, I will eat nothing but greasy fast food meals. I will also stroll down 118th and utilize the sexual services of the crack whores there (after all, the government advocates we shouldn't worry about the economy and we should spend, spend, spend !). I will also give up any form of exercise and my sports activities to help my body deteriorate quicker. Additionally, I'll take up smoking and heavy binge drinking. Don't want those slimey **stards taking my lungs nor liver.

Am I missing anything else on my checklist? I want to be proactive on this one...

yup, you do. You miss the one condition that you must be very happy and fully enjoy doing all as listed.
I, myself cannot enjoy all greasy fast food; so it is not that I don't want to but how and why? And BB, not all men could enjoy experiencing the 118th, that is, until they try it ....... Oops! You tried and you liked it..... (of course I am joking here, no offense)!

Don't forget to sit reeealy close to the TV when you're watching it. Or better still, maybe take up welding, but don't wear them sissy goggles, gloves, aprons, respirators and junk.

Finally, haven't ya heard that earplugs are bad for ya and really loud noises (tunes cranked, uaing power tools, and gunshots, for example) are good for ya? You're kinda slacking BB. Still a goldmine of spare parts if ya only take up bad dieting/exercise habits and hos.
