| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 2/26/2009 1:14:45 PM | This guy, Demian Maia, is bringing BJJ back to the forefront of MMA much like Royce Gracie did back in the Dark Days.....except Maia is much better than Gracie ever was.
He's 10 - 0, and 5 - 0 in the UFC, all with first round submissions. He's the future of the MW division and will be hard to stop.

| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 2/26/2009 3:36:54 PM | | Well, he made Chael Sonnen look like an amateur, and Chael is no slouch. I'm looking forward to more of his fights. | |
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 2/26/2009 10:11:24 PM | Like I said...shoulda gave him the title shot...there's not too many guys who can pull off what he's doing....not even BJ Penn
It should be Maia vs Marquart for the next title shot...
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 2/27/2009 6:52:15 PM | The problem with Maia, is he has an average, or below average stand up game, not really sure which. If you gave him a title shot, he would most likely end up loosing, because he would try and pull guard as often as possible, and would get knocked out in the process.
If Maia vs. Marquart were to happen, I would go with Marquart getting the victory.

| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 2/28/2009 7:11:12 AM | It's interesting that Marquardt is getting such a good buzz lately. I've heard people say that Marquardt can beat everyone except Silva. That's wrong, IMO. Marquardt's not as good as many people think he is, and Maia would beat Marquardt. What did Marquardt ever do? Got destroyed by Anderson. Went to decisions against journeymen like Lister and Salaverry. Cheated against Leites. Beat Gouveia, but that doesn't make Marquardt championship material, either. Marquardt's only great win was his demolition of Kampmann.
Maia would take the fight to the ground against Marquardt and submit him in the first round.
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 2/28/2009 11:04:30 AM | | Well, I don't know if the Maia/Lister comparison is a valid for Marquardt. Dean Lister is a very good BJJ black belt with an average stand-up game, and Marquardt won. A win is still a win. | |

He doesn't have to pull guard. He's a Judo BB, and Sonnen found that out first hand.
If he can get in close, he could put Silva on his back. And if he can do that, all bets are off on what would happen.

He dominated Jeremy Horn in very impressive fashion.
Ya...he f*cked up against Leites...but I wouldn't go so far as to say he cheated....and either way...he was still winning before the knee...not to mention...the rediculous point for that blow to the side of the head.....I was f*ckin' pissed off watching that fight because Marquart would have won...and he would beat Leites more often than not....
As far as the Gouveia fight...he kinda looked a little awkward in the first few rounds...but he still devasted Wilson....who else is he gonna fight? Bisping? He'd put that 205er away readily too. Think about it....there's not much more competition before Silva....
I'd probably pick Maia over Marquart...I don't think we've seen Nate submitted...but Maia truely is on a different level....then again...give Maia someone he can't take to the ground...and I think he's done....

| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/2/2009 8:24:43 AM | This upcoming MW fight between A. Silva and Thales Leites will be interesting. Leites is a higher level BJJ BB than Anderson, and Maia is a higher level BB than Leites. Will Anderson use his footwork and reach to keep the fight standing? Or will he risk clinching with Leites (and being taken down), in order to work his Muay Thai?
Maia will be watching so he can tailor his own gameplan based on how Anderson deals with Leites.

| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/2/2009 12:38:51 PM | i still dont think anyone can touch anderson silva. he is just too well rounded, too light on his feet, and too fast. anderson is just untouchable right now. infact, i think he could move up to 205 and win the belt by absolute schooling.
he is just on another level. people underestimate his ground game aswell. he is a black belt and people say his takedown defense isnt up to par but i disagree. i dont think he really cares where the fight takes place. i honestly dont ever remember silva really making a serious attempt to defend a takedown. when he threw that flying knee against lutter, he basically laid down after that and the result speaks for itself. silva by triangle.
silva can win the fight anywhere. he has proven it time and time again. i wouldnt be suprised if he tapped leites or maia out with some kind of a submission. he is just that damn good.

| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/2/2009 3:49:42 PM | There is no way in hell does Anderson sub Maia, unless it's from strikes.
He would want no part of the ground against Maia. None at all.
And I don't think he would school everyone at 205.
Even tho they would never fight, I really don't think he would school Machida.
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/2/2009 4:38:33 PM | sure, maia might be a beast in sport BJJ but in an actual fight? its very possible anderson can sub him when you throw punches and kicks into the mix. no one gave anderson a chance in hell of subbing lutter. a well placed up kick caused lutter to fall right into a triangle.
if anderson has proven time and time again is you cant count him out in ANY facet of the game. he has out grappled guys who were supposed to rag doll him and make him look like an amatuer on the ground. he has out struck guys who were supposed to knock his head off. everytime anderson fights, he ends up schooling guys at their own game wether it be striking or grappling.
like i said, i wouldnt be suprised if anderson did sub maia.
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/2/2009 4:58:29 PM | i mean seriously, how many times do we have to go through this?
a guy wins a few fights in impressive fashion and everyone is like OMFG hes going to beat anderson!
anderson steps into the cage with said fighter, a minute later said fighter is laying on the canvas in a busted heap.
rinse and repeat
it never ends.
anderson vs. maia = anderson wins by which ever way he chooses and looks completely bored in the process.
hes on another level folks

Lutter was gassed from his terrible GNP before any of that happened.
And also...Lutter didn't even belong in there with him.
he has out grappled guys who were supposed to rag doll him and make him look like an amatuer on the ground.
Who? Hendo? Dan was gassed by the end of the first round, and got rocked before things turned south in that fight.
he has out struck guys who were supposed to knock his head off.
Who on earth was suppose to do that? He has had the obvious striking advantage in all of his fights.

| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/3/2009 8:16:12 AM | I see this fight going one of two ways:
If it stays standing, Anderson takes it. But if it goes to the ground, it's Maia's fight. While I think Maia has a definite chance on the ground, I'm not counting my chickens yet as to him winning. I'd like to see him fight Marquardt, Franklin or Henderson first just to see how he'll truly fair on the top level of the MW division.
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/3/2009 11:46:28 AM | | Maia would destroy Marquardt. Absolutely destroy him. Marquardt is tailor-made for him. Maia would have more trouble with Franklin or Henderson. | |

well if this rumor is true, we will get to see if Maia is the next MMA giant when he faces the winner of Anderson and Thalas. I don't see Maia beating Anderson, but he could probably pull of a win against Thalas.
|
| Demian Maia = Next MMA Giant Posted: 3/30/2009 10:21:45 PM | | Maia can beat both of them; but he'll only beat Anderson if he can get him to the ground and keep him there long enought to capitalize on an opening. The next few months will be great for the MW division. I see Bisping beating Hendo and jumping into the title mix, as well. | |
