PSA: Poisoning by fish (no, not fugu)

I am hardly one to be called a worry-wart (or is it wort?), nor do I act like Monk when it comes to everyday things. In fact, some people might consider me somewhat reckless in certain instances. However, this is one of those odd situations where knowing is half the battle.

For those of you who eat fish such as grouper, sea bass (without lasers on their heads) and snapper, be aware of ciguatera fish poisoning. Essentially, it's an incurable illness caused by the accumulation of coral algae toxins in large tropical reef fish. The symptoms may seem like food poisoning but can be much worse.

For the full story, see:

most of my "seafood" comes from the murky waters of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico...

Slow news day at MSNBC .... note that the link story is totally surrounded by peanut butter/salmonella items ....

Key word is be aware , been around forever . Mainly Grouper , Snapper , Mackeral are the "consumables" .
Barracuda taste great , but have long been "off the table" , they're the biggest toxin carriers by far if I recall .

Less alarmist story/data here : http://www.whoi.edu/redtide/page.do?pid=14276

key is getting the docs to check for it if other tests show negatives .

I worry a lot more about mercury , etc . , in freshwater fish .

from the University of Miami : Lethality is usually seen with ingestion of the most toxic parts of fish (ie. the liver, viscera, roe and other organs).

article : http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/groups/niehs/science/ciguatera.htm

enjoy your seafood (seriously) .

it seems like almost everything you get from the wild...be it ocean...inland lake...forest...whatever...is contaminated in one way or another...the mnr here has placed a "safe" limit on the amount of walleye and lake trout etc that come from the great lakes...too much mercury...no more eating wild game liver...moose, deer etc...again...cadmium and mercury in the liver...who is responsible?...duh

Colorado has a warning for fish. Something about little ones ok to eat........

That cheap Chinese crap we have bought..... Clean coal.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD is the biggest problem with Colorado big game........ Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease does not encourage eating game. The Chinese didn't cause this...........

Agree with you blues. Mercury is definitely a high concern, especially if you eat a lot of fish.

I do enjoy my seafood though it's generally limited to shrimp, clam and (technically) salmon. On occasion I'll find something else from the sea to eat when the mood strikes me.

I think in this case, it's because the symptoms mimic something not necessarily serious that people won't think about checking if there is something more serious going on. If you wait a week, it's too late.

Better to be aware than oblivious.
