| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 3/1/2009 6:02:08 AM | its a term that has many meanings... and because of that should be avoided unless you mean the worst one. it truly only means getting together.. I hooked up with my friend at the mall and went shopping. he hooked me up with a cd I was looking for. but now people are saying they hooked up when they had sex and alot of times yes it is for a once and done kind of fling. easier to avoid using than giving the wrong impression and offending someone. | |

Probably. Without knowing what you know, it's hard to tell you what you don't. Hell... there are terms that are used that *I* don't know.. and my first language is English!!

1. hooking up 1138 up, 218 down An incredibly ambiguous phrase that drives me absolutely insane when people use it. John hooked up with Mary. (so what did they actually do? Did they meet at the park? Did they talk? or did they duke like viagra-injected rabbits? who knows...) by thedon Nov 17, 2004 share this 2. hooking up 470 up, 80 down any form of getting some type of action, such as, making out, feeling things, or oral pleasure or sex between 2 people. "A hook up" is whats referred to as doing those things when your not going out with anyone Guy:"yo, i hooked up with kristin last night!" Guy 2:"Nice, what did you do?" Guy1:"we only got to third" by A jerzy boy Dec 6, 2003 share this 3. hooking up 185 up, 84 down hook up/hooked up
1. To engage in romantic/sexual activity with another at a party/gathering.
Usually, one or both partners are under the influence of alcohol, or another judgement imparing drug. "Hooking up" usually involves little or no emotional attachment.
2. An exchange. To give/recieve/share an asset, or something of value, usually something that is tangible.
"Hooking up" is most commonly used in reference to the sale/exchange of illict drugs. 1. Sally is always hooking up with guys at parties.
2. Sally is hooking me up with some crack later this afternoon.
So says Urban Dictionary. The suggestion that you avoid it's use, unless you intend to mystify your listeners, is well-taken.

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 3/2/2009 5:51:03 AM | | Are there terms you don't know? You bet. The kids make up new terms everday. Then the old terms mean something different now. So hooking up meant you were going steady when I was in high school. Now it means a booty call. Who's supposed to keep up. I think if you define the language that best expresses exactly what you want.... whatever it is you'll be fine. You just have to make sure that the guy YOU are with can read the same page, the same language and understands you. | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 3/2/2009 6:07:22 AM | | OP, I must admit that "hooking up" to me also meant meeting someone, like for coffee or dinner. It wasn't until recently that I learned that in modern dating it means "a round of sex." Guess I'm either showing my age or just really out of the loop when it comes to dating. | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 3/18/2009 10:03:33 PM | Hooking up always meant just that....you hooked up! but i think the younger folks these days consider "hooking up" to be just hanging out with someone. | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/2/2009 4:35:49 PM | | OK...so, I met a 55 y.o. guy at a couple of group functions, the last one being last Saturday. He texted me on most days this week. On Wednesday, he asked if I was available this Saturday because if so, he'd like to hookup and see a movie. He made all of the arrangements via text, even to the point of where and what time we'd meet. So, I figured it was as friends and asked what movie we were seeing so I could buy my ticket online. He told me which movie. Now, I'm thinking he actually wants to hookup for sex after the movie, which is at 7pm, especially after reading this thread and the fact that all of the communication was solely through text messages (less personal, less invasive in his life, etc.). Any opinions? | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/2/2009 4:39:45 PM | I'd not assume the sex part.
Hookups for sex don't usually involve a movie!!
I'd say, especially considering his age, he is using the term in the sense that it used to be used......which is just meeting up.

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/2/2009 7:10:36 PM | | It means having a sexual encounter without any emotional attachment or long-term expectations. Depending on the circumstances, hook-ups can be just good fun or something pretty cold and ugly. | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/2/2009 9:46:26 PM | | It depends on who you are talking to. To me, it means sex, but I have heard it used in the manner in which you are speaking of as well. | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/3/2009 5:21:09 AM | I think it's a matter of inflection and/or context used. Kind of like terms such as "gay", "tea bag", "service", "package", etc., etc., etc. "Hooking up" has meant getting together for the longest time. In recent years it has been used as "hook me up with" when someone gets something for you. It's only in the past few years it has meant to have sex, so I wouldn't stop using it to mean "to get together". | |
|
| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/3/2009 7:33:31 AM | | I think most men would use "hooking up" as a synonym for sex, if the woman is sexy. If she's not so attractive and psychotic, it could mean, "meeting at a 'certain' location." | |
|
| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/3/2009 7:49:16 AM | | It seems to me that about half of the words in English can be used as sexual innuendo, including "innuendo." | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/3/2009 8:15:42 AM | English, is probably the hardest language to fully master. Words like "would, wood and horse hoarse". Two different meanings, yet sound totally the same verbally. It's a persons perspective of those two words "hooking up". Personally, I call a spade a spade not a shovel. That phrase, is totally innocent to me and sounds more "Amercanised" being that I'm British. Or is it because I'm just a prude? . | |

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/3/2009 1:08:23 PM | I must thank the OP and posters...I was always wondering about that "phrase" , now I know better not to use it. I am also not raised in US, so as much as I try and master English, some words, slang escapes me.

| what does the term hooking up mean Posted: 10/3/2009 1:21:28 PM | | Yup, yup yup. I really wish we could start some kind of wikipedia-like sex/dating glossary on here. There are new terms and phrases being created all the time, and old ones being redefined. Not to mention, that when people are writing their profiles, having a glossary to use to see if they said what they meant might help improve some of the nonsense and misunderstandings out there. | |

i think the younger folks these days consider "hooking up" to be just hanging out with someone. Don't any of you folks have teens?
To "hook up" means to have sex. To "chill" means to hang out.
