| Pictures above the forums from different local than above inbox Posted: 3/1/2009 9:18:20 PM | | I did a search on this and only found one thread and nobody had the answer. I live in Las Cruces, NM, I live no where near Albuquerque or Santa Fe but that's where all the pictures are from. So is there a setting I'm missing that would change the people they show me to be from somewhere close to my area? And yes I made sure my profile had the right city, state, and zip code, I even re-entered it and saved it to see if I could make it change. Nope, I only get pictures from Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas. It's useless if it can't be changed to the area you want. | |

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/1/2009 10:24:50 PM | That is wierd -- is your zipcode large and bordering on those areas?

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/1/2009 10:35:35 PM | | I think it means just that there aren't enough PoF users near you, so the default is the next major city. Las Cruces is a pretty small town, from what I remember. | |

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/1/2009 11:02:10 PM | It's 80,000 but I'm very close to El Paso, TX so you think they'd be showing me something from there, and no my zip isn't close to Santa Fe or Albuquerque, they are several hours away.
Thank you for the link. | |

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/2/2009 9:24:54 AM | | I live in an area that is heavily populated, and has lots of Fish, but often, the pics. are of people that are two hours away. Go figure. | |

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/6/2009 10:05:36 PM | I am pretty sure it has to do with the physical address of your internet service providers (ISP) server at its point of presence (POP) on the internet.
Are you on dialup? Are you calling a number for your ISP that is in the other area? The pictures will be from the area in which your ISP is located?
When I access POF from home, I am accessing the internet from my local ISP that has a POP close to where I live. While at home, the pictures are from my local area. When I access POF from work, the POP is in our home office in a state 700 miles away. The pictures I get while at work are from that area.
For more information on POP look up "point of presence" on Wikipedia. (This definition of POP should not be confused with the "post office protocol" used by email.)

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/9/2009 5:05:16 PM | | I don't know, how do I find my IPS (I use to know that but brain fart)? I'm not on dial up my internet is cable...if that makes sense. | |
|
| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/9/2009 5:39:34 PM | Your ISP is your internet service provider. Mine (unfortunately) is Qwest. When I set up the internet, the ISP had a series of phpne numbers to choose from. So I think what he's saying is perhaps you've chosen access numbers that have a different area code from the one you live in...?
Now, I didn't set up my cable internet, I paid a guy to come out and do it. So maybe a call to whoever provides your internet service and ask them.

I noted that you mentioned above the forums, and I do believe there is a difference between the thumbnails that appear above your profile and inbox, than what appears above the forum pages.
As an FYI, the only place you’ll see pictures above the forums are when you are viewing your regional/local event forum, unless you are logged out, and then you can see them whenever you enter any forum. If you are logged out, the system can only discern what the IP of the visiting computer is, there’s no way it can determine what your actual local may be, other than when you are logged in.
As far as your profile zip and other geo particulars are concerned they are accurate because when I view your profile, members are appearing from the correct local you reside in – so no worries there.
Consequently, and as far as the forum pictures are concerned, I do believe it’s IP based, because I will get radically different results from home than I do from the office, because my office IP and ISP carrier are different than at home. I’m not talking just a few miles but a 4 or 5 hour drive away, so I’m betting that the pictures you see above the forums are based on wherever your ISP carrier is from.
It shouldn’t matter that much in any event because what you see at the top of the forum, seem to be members in a +/- 5 year age range different from what your stated minimum and maximum age ranges are that you specified in your preferences based on these instructions Set Your On Line Match / Search Preferences
So is there a setting I'm missing that would change the people they show me to be from somewhere close to my area? Check the members across the top of your inbox for more accurate results and do set everything up as mentioned here Set Your On Line Match / Search Preferences.
In any event, being on cable , your IP will or should stay relatively static, not that that matters anyway. There’s not much that can be done about that if the forum display is IP based. There is a thread somewhere, but I’ve forgotten to bookmark it !

| Pictures above the forums Posted: 3/9/2009 5:59:17 PM | Here's mine, but that's just what you've already confirmed: http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts9028383.aspx
Basically the DNS record for her IP will indicate information about the parent company or upstream provider of her ISP, so the forum pages get the location wrong. I still get NYC/New Jersey at home, but Toronto at work. Good dig - thanks - Trapped'
