i don't know what's with the USA and demonic spiders on a rampage. i lived in romania for 30 years almost, no european i ever met got taken down by a spider bite, but seems to be common in the states?

i was delusionally unaware, and a black widow has been keeping me w open holes in my leg for almost ten days now, not to speak the couple weeks i looked at the weird sight letting it get out of hand

i didn't know what it was, i mean i saw ttwo lil sets of double teeth marks, but wasn't sure, until it got me in the ER three days in a row w ivs every 12hrs, antibiotics, and open disgusting looking wounds, pumped w morphine .

am i the only one that didn't know about spider bites, is it just an american thing, or am i just unaware of its commonality???

i tried to go to work first time tonight, a week after my ER drama, and i had to come home early,t it looks almost as bad as last friday, i started feeling really sick again, and the wound reopened too, i am just freaked out because i just can't believe i still have a hole in my leg after all that medication and time??????

what the heck??? how long this gonna take?????is it is normal, do they all take this long, anybody know? why can't i work still? is that normal to still feel sick?

sorry if i sound like a cry baby, am just taken by surprise in how poorly i seem to be able to handle a simple friggin bug bite, it can't be normal?

OP
My best friend just went thru this....so she thought.
She woke up one morning and thought she had a spider bite on her backside..a week later another one on her stomach...7 days later finally went to a DR.....turned out it was MRSA and not a spider bite.
Very nasty wounds, flu like symptoms, swelling & pain at site and when you do internet searches the pictures of MRSA and spider bites some look the same. She had to do 2 rounds of antibiotics and get the wounds drained...shes finally feeling better but has deep purple scars...Dr says those will fade with time..and is a result of a deep infection.

Good luck to you. Hope you feel better soon.

Like sweety said, it is more likely that these sores are from Methicillin Resistant Staph. aureus than a spider. This is a common misdiagnosis and an increasingly common infection.

I had a friend who was bitten by a Brown Recluse spider. He was in the hospital almost a month. That sort of thing happens a lot here in Texas.

That's the first thing that came to my mind. Those bites turn into the most horrendous looking wounds I've ever seen.

wishing you the best

...............................................................

that happened yrs ago to a woman here in Rochester NY- she almost died.. keep getting care, dont let this go. It takes a long time to heal fr what I can remember
good luck.. & get a 2nd opinion if you feel you need one.. from an infectious disease doc.. to make sure you are on the right antibiotics. Hopefully you are seeing a surgeon re: the wound care

I whole heartedly agree with getting a second opinion.. especially if you're not seeing any improvements...
Hope you get this under control and get yourself healed up asap!

OP - Sorry to hear about your experience with American Spiders.. you may want to read up on them a bit and know how to identify them especially around where you live. I hate to break it to you, but depending on where you live (sorry, I didn't look at your profile before posting...my bad) we also have things like poisonous snakes, scorpions, etc. Do some research about your area so you know what to watch out for and I hope your bite heals up! Good luck!

Black Widows are really nasty, to the point where one can kill you. You just happened to get bitten by one of the worst spiders we have around here. We have a lot of little spiders but most of them more annoying than dangerous.

As someone else mentioned the only one I can think of that's worse is the Brown Recluse. When one of those gets you it makes the tissue start to rot around the bite. Have to get it treated asap and it will leave a scar.

My take on your "bite" is that if it is a spider, it is not a Black Widow (their venom is neurotoxic and would likely cause a very different reaction more along the lines of anaphylaxis - unless this is what you mean by delusionally unaware?), but more likely some other type of spider that may have a necrotizing (flesh killing) enzyme in their venom (Brown Recluse, Hobo Spider, etc.) When some people are bitten by such a spider, the flesh around the bite area dies and then becomes vulnerable to bacterial infections by the skin's natural staphylococcus flora. Keep on top of your medical care if you have a bacterial infection. MRSA is a scary bug.

There are other types of bloodsucking insects you may want to investigate as a potential culprit if indeed this is caused by a bite ie: bedbugs, chiggers....

Good luck.

THANK YOU guys for all the valuable advice and info. i will surely do my homework searching for what to be aware of in my area, snakes, bugs etc, and research some spiders.

my wound finally got better after i finished my medication, it closed, been a week now, and the scab (or what u call it) is getting smaller. seems i am out of the water, thank god.

i am not sure what it was, whether mrsa or spider, but i was on a date and we both got bitten, that's how i knew immediately what it was, he ended up in the VA hospital right away and they told him it was a black widow. i let mine go, i figured i can tough it out, since i don't have insurance, and went it when it blew over, 2 weeks later.

but of course am not sure, who cares, it's gone, and i learnt a valuable lesson. bug bite or not, am looking 'em bugs up after this one!!!

thank u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you described sounds like MRSA, as the other post said. My friends little daughter had that last summer. It is very serious as you have said. I have never heard of a spider biting two people sitting together. That also sounds like something you were exposed to. Her (my friend) son 24 and her 12 year old got it. They're in the Central Valley. Sorry you're having to go through all that. I keep hearing these stories, too the past year or so.

If it was a Black widow there is an antivenin [yes antivenin not antivenom] available but it is very expensive and has been known to cause allergic reations so many physicians will opt for morphine and antibiotic therapy as a first line strategy. Something else to keep in mind is that BW antivenin may sensitize a person to later use of rattlesnake anti venin.

Don't be too sure about that ONE2ENV, wait till you encounter the killer spiders that we have living in North America now, poisonous spiders are popping up in the GTA and other parts of Canada from time to time, you usually hear about them appearing in grocery stores inside fruit boxes, especially Florida oranges. The North American Black Widow is usually the one to be feared the most, however they live in shady cool places so the chances of them popping up in your house is pretty slim, plus they aren't known for attacking people as often as other venomous spiders.

several years ago, i took my kid to the ER for what they "concluded" was a spider bite. where she had gone camping, they swore there were no ticks. speaking to kitchen help that summer, i figured their symptoms sounded like lymes and gave my dr.'s number.

not putting two and two together, which i should have 'cause i have lymes, i began to
observe her little finger twitching several months later. took her for full fledged tick borne illness testing to a lymes literate doc who referred to a lymes literate lab, and she had babesia, another tick borne illness.

the following summer, the camp had all sorts of tick and lyme warning signs everywheres. i believe the kitchen workers took them to task! since then, i never believe it when i'm told it's a spider bite, unless i see the spider or ask how they determined their dx.

There are ALOT of spiders in the US , I've lived in Florida my whole life and have seen afew black widows but not bit by one..although I have been bit several times apparently by brown-recluse spiders. twice in my sleep, just woke to very achy bones[it bit my foot, another on my shin, the worst was spiderbite and reaction to thier spider poisons; one bit me right at my pantyline ,whole inner thigh was visibly swollen thru clothes.Iwas so agitated at the ER Dr.s "routine questions"..guess they get some odd injuries there..
I cannot believe you waited so long to get help after a black widow bite!!! The brown recluse bites cause swelling, bruising, severe pain, cellulitis[severe infected swelling]...you are lucky to be alive ,you need to go to a doctor you trust and forget the ER, there's never been a time I went to the ER and they handled the situation appropriately/completely.If you have an open wound still rom that bite it's likely infected, ask a Dr. for Avelox,it is a very strong antibiotic I took when I had infected recluse bites.
*typed all that and then i saw the question was from afew mos. ago,LOL

Yeah that definitely sounds like a brown recluse, not a black widow. Neither one is any fun but the recluse is the one that will do more permanent damage because the bite causes necrosis of the flesh. Black widow bites I've seen look like a large mosquito bite and the venom causes spasms, cramping, nausea, headache and sometimes fever. It's a rough few days but not usually fatal for a healthy adult.
