| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/13/2009 7:58:09 AM | | Is there a way to know if someone's pics are fake other than by talkiung to them or the pic looking like a model? What does it mean if the pic says POF at the bottom? Is that a sign that it may be fake? My ex was using other peoples pics to spy on me and every one of them had that so I'm wondering coincidence, or something else? | |

| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/13/2009 11:16:58 AM | | It's just a watermark that POF puts on everyone's picture that uploads one on here. There's really no way to know for sure if the person has a real pic on their profile... unless you know them personally. | |
|
| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/13/2009 11:22:49 AM | Ask them for a new pic. Anyone with a camera phone, digital camera or webcam should be able to provide you with a pic in short order. Ask them to hold a certain object, or say you'd love to see a pic of them with their dog/cat/bird/tapeworm named "Harry."
Some people hold up today's newspaper as proof.
I can honestly think of no other ways to ensure that the person you're communicating with is who they're presenting themselves to be.

Is there a way to know if someone's pics are fake other than by talkiung to them or the pic looking like a model? Not really, but if they have only one picture, with the tell tale blurry background and sharp foreground image, it's indicative of a model shot lifted from a net advertisement. Not too many use that technique for candid image shots.
Also look for again, one image that has very low resolution as if it were enlarged or cropped from another picture.
Typically items such as the above, where there is only one picture in the portfolio coupled with a very generic 2 line profile about me and an email exchange that seems to be somewhat evasive may leave you wondering, not all mind you, but a good eyebrow raiser followed by a hmmm.
There have also been some serious dysfunctionals out there that cruise facebook or myspace and steal a series of pictures, and that is difficult to detect.
Also check for any other logos that may be partially overed by the POF logo, also a possible tip off.

Well not a fake it's actually one of my modelling shots... Report the profile via the link down at the bottom that says Report (user name). I already have and the more people that do it, the faster it gets the admins attention.

Live WebCam is the only Way to be sure.
I absolutely insist on at least one session and if they don't have sound then on the phone also.
|
| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/19/2009 1:30:27 PM | I took down my picture because every one thought it was fake.
It seems no believed that anyone else could really be that ugly.
|
| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/19/2009 6:59:19 PM | IF you like their profile, AND they can hold a conversation, you COULD just MEET them? Like people USED to do? Not many people have a webcam. And "many" do not like having their picture taken and/or photograph well. IF he is local, AND you split the driving distance, what are we talking, 15 or 20 minutes to get to a meet? Is that TOO long a drive or effort to make to meet a "good" Fish?
Plus, it is not particularly difficult for people to "appear" thinner in their photos with various angles, poses, lighting etc. even on cam.

| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/20/2009 4:31:05 AM | | You can find web cams under $50 if you can't afford $50 then you can't afford to date. | |
|
| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/20/2009 7:29:30 AM | Hmmm, I've never done the web cam thing, never been asked to, and never asked anyone else to. Frankly, I'd be offended if someone challenged me on the authenticity of my pictures. After all, if I was going to put up fake ones, they'd be a helluva lot better looking than my real ones! | |
|
| Identifying fake pics Posted: 3/20/2009 9:50:40 AM | just where do you shop?
You can find web cams under $50 if you can't afford $50 then you can't afford to date. try downtown spadina and college... 30$ and Bob's yer uncle.

What I think POF should adapt is a simple image verification system where a person whom wants to verify themselfs has to take a photo of themselfs holding a note of their username saying for example "hotgarbage@POF".

|
| Identifying fake pics Posted: 4/1/2009 2:46:09 PM | there's a image search engine where you can upload pics that you suspect to be fake, and it will show you where else on the internet the pics appear. If you get more than one match, chances are the pic is fake. here's the link : tineye.com
the database is not very big, so it cannot identify all pictures. just give it a try. i've busted many fakers before using this image search engine.

I guess that would work if you didnt have any buddies that were better looking then you that you could get to hold that sign in trade for a beer. (wink)

Not many people have a webcam. And "many" do not like having their picture taken and/or photograph well.
Increasingly, most people have live webcams. Almost all laptops sold over the past two years have them built in, and if not, I've seen them at Wal-Mart for close to $30.
I would NOT meet someone, or get very far down the road towards developing "interest" online without a pic, and messaging with live webcam is a great way to get past that initial "mind shock", when you're going on just a static picture.
I honestly don't know why someone who is sincerely interested in meeting in real life would object. In fact, it's an opportunity to see each other in motion, facial expressions, etc..

I agree completely! Was on a site that did that and it was very helpful.
Cowboy, yes there's the chance of using your buddy's picture but the chances that the pictures being used now are either OLD or stolen off the web are even greater. I can't see too many men asking their much better looking friends to pose as them... that wouldn't be good for the ego.

| Identifying fake pics Posted: 4/2/2009 4:48:57 AM | Folks, just because theres a pic of someone holding up a piece of paper with their username on it does not make it them.
I think you're lulling yourself into a false sense of security if you accept this as evidence.
Case in point.... http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x69/cherrilollipop/allison2009.jpg
