| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/14/2009 11:01:28 AM | I have booked a private section at Tipperary's Irish Pub Thursdays at 6 pm.
We have the room every Thursday (except March 26). The room holds 25-30 people.
Reservation is under Plenty of Fish (POF)
http://www.tipperaryspub.com/index.php
From their website:
Tipperary's is located directly across the street from Home Depot on 16th Ave. N.W. — We are just two blocks North of a C-Train Station and 2min West from SAIT Polytechnic.
It’s a long way to Tipperary.
Tipperary is more then a place on a map. It’s a state of mind. It’s about good friends getting together.
It’s great food, cold beer and lots of laughter.
If you are looking for a friendly fun place to watch the game, a place to meet after the game, or if you are in the mood for an inexpensive Sunday breakfast, make Tipperary’s Pub your first choice.
Tipperary's - Hard to leave, easy to find.
We have the room every Thursday starting at 6 pm. We can bring board games but we cannot bring cards (due to the gaming/gambling laws they cannot allow cards) so feel free to bring along your favourite board game. I'll bring Scrabble! There are also pool tables just outside the private section if that is your game of choice.
The room also has tv's so if a game falls on Thursday, we still have the room to enjoy watching the game.
Thursdays are $2 wing nights and $4.25 Corona nights. With large reserved groups there is a 16% gratuity added to your bill (i.e. spend $10, cost you $1.60 - I think I tip more than that anyways). They normally require one tab with group reservations but they are willing to accommodate us and have separate tabs for everyone.
The manager is willing to try this for one month. If they do not get enough interest then we have to give up the private room.
For those interested in arriving by C-train, get off at the Lions Park station. Walk up to the corner of 19th Street and 16th Avenue and it's right there.
For those interested in a sneak peek at Tipperary's Pub, they are having live music and an all day party on St Patrick's Day so I'll be there around 6 pm to check that out. Feel free to join me.
First reservation date is Thursday March 19th so please post here if you are interested in coming. If not enough interest I need to cancel the room on Wednesday.

| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/14/2009 1:20:19 PM | hmm thats pretty brazen of them to "add" the gratuity i mean after they have already tripled the price of the alcohol, they want to just tack on another fee, these guys are getting a lil bit high on themselves where i come from tips are at the discretion of the customer. frankly id deduct the 16% from the bill and thank the establishment for the tip | |

hmm thats pretty brazen of them to "add" the gratuity Yep, welcome to 21st century customer service, trubblmakr. A lot of restaurants are doing that now... and more and more (mostly chains) are no longer taking reservations either ... because lord knows what a nuisance THAT is.

| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/14/2009 2:08:51 PM | Great idea to have a games night! Great idea as well to hold it in a more central location.
I've worked in fine restaurants and never never have added grat. unless the reservation was for 20 or more and the clients were forwarned on making the reservation.
I wouldn't pay my grat. up front. Service in these places sometimes suk and I refuse to pay for poor service.

The gratuity is based on a large group reservation as the room is for 25-30 people. Many establishments do that now.
Great popsicletoes!! I'll bring Scrabble. Is there any other game you'd like to play?

For arguements sake, this usually doesn't happen in a pub setting, especially when each of the 25 are being billed separately. Save yourselves some coin and pick a games night at someone's house.

They are only billing us separately to accommodate us. They said they normally would bill on one bill because we are reserving the room. I personally do not want responsibility for everyone's bill. Is there a preference to have one bill? I thought requesting separate bills would please everyone. The room is booked as one reservation.

Thank you for the advice sambo. You go ahead and have a party at your house if you want to, but I do not want virtual strangers at my house and I'm not going to make this closed to anyone. Everyone is welcome.
Three for Scrabble so far.

| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/14/2009 9:51:26 PM | Yes, April 2 would be the next one. Then we have the room every Thursday after that so long as we utilize it.
I did check with the mods and I can't post this in the events because it's a weekly thing opposed to a one time event so we'll have to keep in touch on this thread on a weekly basis (just like the breakfast one).

| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/15/2009 5:03:19 AM | I have Cranium that I can bring if there is any other interest in it. Hopefully we will have enough folks to play a few different games. It is too bad we can't play any card games.
I like the idea of seperate bills. If some undercalculate what they owe, the folks left at the end are not having to pay to cover them. I think it is very common at restaurants that if you have a table of 8 or more that they add a tip to the bill. Lucklily I have never had poor enough service that it was an issue.
I am looking forward to metting you cherie and castaline.

| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/15/2009 8:17:55 PM | RE: Tip - most common now. I appreciate that we are told in advance. Seperate bills makes sense to me. I hosted one breakfast, made the reservation for 15. There was a 15% tip added on, that I wasn't told about. We have never been back.
Mon Cherie is right, would you want stranger to know where you live?
I can't play this Thursday because I am in Edmonton! HECK!!! I was so ready for scrabble! trivial pursuit!! and upwords? looking forward to finding out what that is!
Best to all! Fly | |

| Thursday Board Games (or just hang out) Night in Calgary Posted: 3/15/2009 9:39:50 PM | Rummoli would have been fun but that's cards and gambling! The whole reason they don't want cards there in the first place, because it is breaking gambling laws and they could get fined for allowing that.
I'm curious about Upwords too.
I'm looking forward to this. It will be nice meeting some new people and I love board games.
