| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 4:18:17 AM | "The Danish government has begun paying compensation to women who have developed breast cancer after long spells working nights.
It follows a ruling by a United Nations agency that night shifts probably increase the risk of developing cancer.
BBC Radio Scotland's The Investigation has been hearing from experts and union leaders in Scotland who said the UK government should be doing more to tackle the dangers.
For years there has been growing evidence that night shifts are bad for you.
Among the symptoms: disturbed sleep, fatigue, digestive problems and a greater risk of accidents at work. "
Morning all. This story has been in the news today. Do you feel that your own job has had a detrimental effect on your health, mentally or phsically?

Does your job affect your health?
Mine can cause the odd bop on the nose [or worse] if I'm not paying attention or switch off. Hazards of the job though I'm afraid , so I'm not complaining and know what to expect.

| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 4:38:38 AM | Ditto plaster. Add breathing in 20-odd years' worth of wood dust, dessicated rodent poop, and assorted period home-related detritus and I'd question the state of my lungs. (Peculiar thing: when stepping outside to escape the airborne crud for a "breath of fresh air" we invariably have a fag and spend 10 minutes coughing.)
Using your hands for a living in all weathers will probably have implications on the joints in later life, too. It goes with the territory. Health risks and other dangers aside though, I wouldn't want to do anything else.
The other thing my job has a detrimental effect on at present is my bank balance. Bloody recession.....

| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 4:54:58 AM | A previous job which was very physical led to me developing bilateral biceptal tendonitis and epicondylitis (sp?) think tennis elbow, both sides of the elbow, both arms and you've got it, strangely enough when i started to need to take time off because of this I was made redundant shortly after, go figure...
I also have worked constant nights, worst 2 years of my life.

However, I do have a concern that one arse cheek will be smaller than the other from all the patting.....

Some of their more unpleasant habits could induce me to vomit, so I would definitely say that my job affects my health.

Worked in a foundry for years and it *Hurrrr, sniff, Hurrr" hasn't effected me although there's loads of people saying they got ill *Sniff, phhhlp, hurrr* Something to do with heat proofing.. Reckon they're all just craving sympathy tbh. *Cough*

| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 10:46:19 AM | Mine could be in a number of ways i guess, but for the main part of my job its just the odd prat wanting to have a dig at me. I did once hase some woman threatening to throw her shoe at me that was quite amusing. | |

| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 10:59:48 AM | I heard a bit on the radio about this nightshift work thingy and have heard bits and pieces about how bad its supposed to be for you before.
What Im wondering is Is it working nights per se thats supposed to be bad for you (which Im sceptical about) or is it the switching between day and night shift and back again which causes the problems (which I can well believe).
Im not convinced about the merits of compensation even if a link is found but if it goes ahead will healthcare workers, police, emergency service staff and other occupations where shiftwork is prerry much essential be eligable as well ?
Personally Ive been in Jobs in the past which did affect my health but thankfully it was nothing permanent and I was able to find other work fairly easily.

This story has been in the news today. Do you feel that your own job has had a detrimental effect on your health, mentally or phsically? I work on a hospital ward, 24 hour inpatient care. This means I have to work nights, on internal rotation, 3 months per year. In fact, I am due to start 3 weeks of nights, tonight, not looking forward to it at all.
Lost 1/2 stone last time, due to not eating properly. I would finish work and after taking my dog out, go straight to bed. I would be in bed from 8am-4pm, getting up at 1pm to take my dog out again. Even though I'm in bed for most of the day, I only get about 4 hours broken sleep, Jake just won't let me sleep.
I wake up/get out of bed at 4pm, and I have a bowl of cereal. Chill out for a bit, about 7pm have another bowl of cereal. On the way back to work, call in Tesco's and grab 2 sandwiches to last me through my night shift.
Night shift to me = Poor diet/appetite. Poor sleep. No social life.

| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 11:08:27 AM | I think nightshift isn't healthy for the simple reason, your body knows it should be sleeping at that time. I did nightshifts for a year, 4 on 4 off, 12 hour shifts, I hated it, I looked ill, I felt ill, on my days off I still couldn't sleep properly. At 4am when I was working I would feel literally sick with tiredness, also found that I got around 4 hours sleep when I got home.
I've also done the early, late, nights and sleepover shifts on a rota and didn't like that either. I've worked with many managers who couldn't understand how awful certain shift patterns made you feel, when they were on a 9-5 themselves.
|
| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 11:18:45 AM | Personally I dont have a problem working nights (In fact I prefer it) Its the switch from Nights back to days that I couldnt take.
A permanent night or evening shift is ideal for me. More money, Less traffic on the way to work, Easier to get to shops and appointments on the way home etc
|
| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 11:23:28 AM | I hated it, I did it at the time because I was working part time and at uni a couple of days a week and my part time hours weren't enough to keep me afloat financially, the only other job going was permanent nights. It just didn't suit me, I don't mind working a backshift but I don't like earlies or nights and I've done enough of them. I used to have to get up at 5 for an early shift, as I said, I think your body knows when it wants to be asleep. At the moment I work 3 late nights a week and I don't mind that too much, only when it's a late then an early, shift work leaves me feeling like I'm constantly sleep deprived which I probably am, I think my sleep pattern has been destroyed by years of working shifts. | |

| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 11:34:32 AM | In one of my past jobs I swam with sharks, dangled off a football stadium roof, walked barefoot across hot coals, got sunstroke doing a 60 mile bike ride, broke a toe doing a 26 mile hike and kidnapped a manager. Hazardous? Not at all.
Now I work a combination of days, lates and nights and have to breathe solvent fumes all shift. I'm SURE that can't be good for me either, but the money certainly is :D
|
| Doe your job affect your health? Posted: 3/16/2009 11:38:32 AM | Actually, on reflection, I think the most hazardous thing in BOTH jobs is the canteen food though.
Deep fried eggs and bacon with more grease than a John Travolta tribute night? Shocking.
At one place I asked... "What's today's special please?" The woman replied "I don't know, we're still waiting for the lab-results."
I never found out if she was joking or not.

Yes I am knackered all the time but I have dropped a dress size in the last 3 weeks so that more than makes up for it. I used to get high on perm solution in the 80s but thats enough about my private life

Some of them think they are funny giving my arms a nip here and there, a wee tug of the hair etc. And the verbal abuse is second to none, but I know what to expect and it's part and parcel of the job.
I'm sure there are many people who are in jobs they don't like, but because of the economy they are stuck in 'em. That can be stressful when every day seems like torture.
