I have been saying for years that I have dry skin and water around here has chlorine and I know it dries me out, so what could it do to my hair adding the drying effects of even moisturizing shampoo. In the article they discuss how back in the early 1900's people only washed their hair once a month. I could never do that. About every other day is what I am good for. I know that others like me including African Americans have dryer hair types. It does save on plastic in the landfills and a little on your shampoo and water budget. Are there many out there that will shower without shampooing or is shampooing a must every day? (Disclaimer: Shampooing on date night is a must.)

I don't shampoo everyday, but I can't go more than 2 days without doing so due to it looking dirty. I wish I could go longer. I've always felt it was better not to overdo it...mainly because of the need to blow dry my hair.

I agree with this, actually. But, you have to find a shampoo that will help you out. Most shampoos have so many conditioners and things that make your hair feel unclean after a day. I used a shampoo called Nioxin while staying at a friend's house. It was amazing. It's supposed to be for thinning hair. I don't have thinning hair, but I noticed my hair was really, really clean three days later. It was amazing. I haven't used another kind for twelve years. I have long hair and like it to be really clean. This cut the times necessary to shampoo radically. I used to shampoo every day. My hair is cleaner when I wash it than it used to be on a daily basis. Sunday to Tuesday, great. Sometimes an extra day. I don't use other hair products other than the leave in conditioner by the same company). It's funny because I have to buy it at the beauty supply store and they always tell me I'm getting the wrong shampoo. I love this stuff, though. I use the No. 1 for normal hair.

I can get away with washing my hair Sunday, and then Tuesday IF I don't use any product in it. If I put mousse or anything else in it, it needs to be washed every day. I have naturally oily skin, especially in regards to my hair and it gets greasy fast. It's really fine to begin with, but when it starts to get greasy it just looks.. terrible. Limp and stringy.

I also don't wash my hair every day. Way too much work! I usually go at least 2 days, 3 days sometimes. However, running 5 days a week in the winter meant I had to wash it more often. Now the warmer weather means that I can get away with just wearing a headband so it's not as bad.

I also use very little styling product as it tends to make my hair heavy and dull.

I'm not really loyal to any brand, but I tend to buy my products at beauty supply outlets, or lately at Winners and pay $10 for a one litre bottle each shampoo/conditioner.

Interesting. I always wash my hair when I take a shower, and I have terrible dry scalp. Maybe I am shampooing too often!

I didn't really think about it, but when I do use hair spray, my hair does seem to need to be washed sooner.

I think that I will try the Nioxin shampoo too. If it cuts down on hair washing, with a family of 4, that would be great! Thank you!

I am glad to also read that I am not the only one that doesn't wash their hair every day! Thanks all

I shampoo when I shower - every other day.

When I travel, I don't even use shampoo... I stick with soap.

Yikes!!!! Soap on hair??????

My hair is colored and it's best to not wash every day if at all possible. I went from brunette to a golden blonde and I have to be very careful about what products I use. I'll go every other day or one more if it's the weekend and I can get by with a ponytail. If I wash my hair too often, it feels like straw and I don't like that. I generally stick with one or two shampoos that seem to moisturize my hair the best; regular garnier fructisse if I'm buying from a retail store, Kiwi if I can find it at a beauty supplier. For those of you who want slick straight hair I'd suggest you buy a ceramic brush, it made all the difference in styling my hair and I don't need to put a bunch of product on my hair to get it shiny and straight. Buy one from a beauty supplier, not your neighborhood Wal-Mart. They'll be able to sell you the right brush for the style you want.

Yes - soap on hair. Growing up in a rural area, as I did, it's all I knew until my 20s.

Any GOOD hair stylist will also tell you to only shampoo your hair about every three days. When you have a shower you can certainly rinse your hair with water, but don't shampoo it. Stay away from most of the cheap shampoo at the drug store, too much detergent and other additives. Some of the best shampoo is found in health food stores, Herbal Glo (not to be confused with Herbal Essence and those bad commercials) makes some great shampoos and conditioners. My hair stylist also tells me not to blow dry my hair unless I have to, not only does it damage your hair, but it will apparently cause you to go grey sooner!

I, too, use regular bar soap on my hair once per day. My hair is short - an inch on the top - so don't know if bar soap would make a difference on longer hair. (Perhaps it would leave a an oily film of the same stuff as the ring in a bathtub.) But at age 56, I don't have any scalp issues after all these years and don't have any gray hair.

Monfil am so glad you shared this as I listen to NPR, and agree with the article. Am I the only one who uses a shower cap? Have since I was a teen ager because I was taught that washing my hair to much would dry it out and to not use a hair dryer unless its on air only because heat damages hair. ~Beth

I have extremely dry skin as well as dry hair so for me, I shampoo once a week/twice a week in the summer months. Because it's naturally curly, I still have to wet it down each day.

I've found that a lot also depends on what you do with your hair... how much you blow dry it, curl it, straighten it, chemicals you put in your hair (hair products, sprays, gels, etc).

When choosing a shampoo you should look for one that is PH balanced. This will not have all the detergents that strip our hair. Washing should be done more at the scalp and not so much of the hair. I don't wash my hair daily but I will rinse my hair and condition the ends. Our skin is the largest organ of our body so if the skin is dry then something is going on internally. Lack of oil. Adding more olive oil, flax seed, cod liver, Omega 3 to our diets would not only help the skin, scalp but also keep our joints lubricated. The other poster mentioned going from brunette to blond. The darker the hair dye the smaller the molecules and red/blond dyes have larger molecules so it's a little harder to maintain since they won't attach to the hair follicles the way darker dyes will.

My physician was the one who told me ages ago that one reason women from the Mediterranean countries have such nice skin was due to food choices and the uses of olive oil. Then I heard Sophia Loren say it was the olive oil in her diet that made her skin so beautiful. So maybe besides genetics its the olive oil in my diet.

But I had never heard about the darker the hair dye the smaller the molecules and red/blond dyes have larger molecules so it's a little harder to maintain since they won't attach to the hair follicles the way darker dyes will. Learn something new every day.

I would love to find an olive oil that I could cook with that I didn't find to be over powerful or bearing in its flavor. I don't want to spend a zillion dollars and do a taste test. I just know that the ones I have ever purchased I didn't care for. I end up using butter. I know the olive oil would be healthier, but if I can't eat the food, forget it. As I know what you eat really does show in your hair and skin. Anyone know of a particular brand that is really mild on the flavor? Maybe it is an acquired taste like spinach...blachhhh

Sophia Loren and Rachel Welch, gosh those women have fabulous skin and hair!

I shower every day since I exercise every day, but I will wash my hair only ever 2nd or 3rd day precisely for this reason.

Also, it's important to choose a relatively gentle shampoo---90% of the stuff out there contains some combination of alcohol and ammonia, from the $1 bottles to the $5 fancier kinds, which will dry out both your hair and your scalp. Organic shampoos are great but a little pricey, so baby shampoo is a good compromise.

It's also good to use two applications, but with each application being no more than a quarter sized dollop in your palm. Your hair will be cleaner, with less waste of shampoo.

For general hair/scalp health though it's your conditioner and particularly your styling product that is most important. These are the only two things that I willingly pay crazy premium prices for in order to get organic, alcohol-free stuff because the mass market conditioner and gels make my scalp itch and flake like crazy.

PS. No I'm not a hardcore metrosexual or anything, I got all this info from my ex, who is kind of fanatical about all things cosmetic and indoctrinated me thoroughly. LOL

Monfil, an alternative to use of olive oil would be coconut oil. It's pricy but very good for the body/joints it also helps to support the heart and other organs. It comes with or with out the coconut flavor. It's very high in antioxidants and is a better choice than butter. You will find it in jars. It will be white and solid. Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees so don't be surprized to open the jar and it's liquid. It's still good and has a shelf life of aprox 2 yrs which in turn it will not oxidate as fast as olive oil. I use it on my oatmeal/toast etc. Coconut oil used to be our primary oil here in the states before WWII when we would get it from Japan and asia. At that point hydrogenated products started showing up on our shelves and 15-20 yrs later here comes high colesterol/heart problems.
With regards to olive oil extra virgin is the best choice. I have tried several lighter ones and yes they all have the olive flavor. Flaxseed oil is another good oil.

I will definitely give the coconut a try! Antioxidants, can't get enough! So maybe I will keep my hair a bit shinier from all these great tips, just wish the wrinkles would disappear too. Yeah, can't have everything.

Thanks all!

Am so blessed because we have neighbors who harvest and press and sell olive oil. A good six different neighbors have small businesses like this and make a decent living since olive oil is so popular around here in California.

And because so many around here have pools and outdoor showers, baby shampoo has become the norm for when one gets done swimming and one needs to rinse their hair and take a quick shower. Just a dab is enough. No tears as well....

Monfil, coconut oil is fantastic. But please be careful about which type you chose. Go for unprocessed, unrefined, raw, organic, extra virgin coconut oil. If you get the processed/refined stuff, you will just damage your body. You can do a simple search online or check your local healthfood store. As long as it's in its pure form, using this is one of the best things you can do for your health. It contains lauric acid (also found in breast milk) which builds the immune system & destroys viruses. The capric acid in this oil contains potent antimicrobial properties. The caprylic acid it contains has serious antifungal properties. It's good for so many things but should be introduced into the diet gradually. It does kill off the bad things in your gut so start off slowly, then increase intake bit by bit (over a couple of weeks or whatever works for your body). It's also used in hair as a deep conditioner, on the scalp to take care of dry scalp/dandruff, on the skin for general health, softness & younger looking skin. Seeing as it's an oil, it seems counter-intuitive but it also helps the heart & cholesterol.

Hmmm... I don't have this problem. My hair is pretty strong, I just shampoo everyday.. Rinse it out really well and just let it dry. I never touch shampoo with extra chemicals to make it soft or some expensive brand..

I wash and blow dry my hair pretty much every day. Only time I might not are on the weekend days when i feel certain I won't leave the house. My hair is shiny and soft, though not fine, just regular. I get compliments on my shiny hair. *shrug* depends on your skin and hair. If I don't wash my hair it greases up pretty fast. By about mid-morning the next day I can run my fingers through my hair and you'll see the path. haha, TMI.

Otherwise - fanatic about showering and washing my hair everyday. If I take a shower and don't wash my hair, my whole body feels dirty faster - all psychological I know, but still how I end up feeling.
