Cat spayed in pain vets are closed any suggestions?

A friend just asked me if I knew of anything to help his female cats that were spayed today. I know no aspirin or tylenol, but the kitties are in pain. He went to a clinic versus a vet, so I am guessing they didn't give them enough pain medication and of course it is Sunday and all the vets are closed. Any suggestions on helping the kitties?

Doesn't matter whether it was a clinic or vet who performed the surgery - cats will feel discomfort for 7-14 days after surgery. My vet always told me to keep the animal quiet for the first few days - easier said than done, especially with Siamese. And he never sent pain meds home.

There are always emergency vets if your Friend is concenered about his Cat, which I would advise if the animal seems in more distress than the vet suggested is natural after the Op....

Cats CAN safely take Aspirin, but they eliminate it from their systems much more slowly than we do, so the dosage is quite small. I'd have no idea what would be a safe amount, so be careful. You might be able to Google it.

I wouldn't suggest administering any type of pain relief without first consulting a vet, if at all possible. If there is an emergency clinic that can be contacted via phone - whether they are in the area or hundreds of miles away - a quick call can't hurt. The cat might be exhibiting more than normal, 'routine' post-surgical distress, indicating something is wrong. If a med is given that isn't vet-recommended, an improper dosage or drug type could do harm.

I'm not certain about post-spays with cats, but when I had my rabbit neutered they injected him with a painkiller that was to last for 24 hours, along with instructions for me to call them if I felt he was in undue pain. Some pain is expected in any animal after surgery, but it should be manageable. If the owner is worried about the cat being in too much pain or distress, then definitely a call to a vet clinic is needed.

A warm blanket may help the kitty to relax and sleep; tossing one in a dryer and then putting it in the cat's bed or favourite resting spot wouldn't be a bad idea. Cats normally love warm areas to sleep anyway, and the warmth of the blanket can help relax tense or contracting muscles.

He gave them their favorite blanket. He had to go to work. I guess I will find out how they are doing later on today.

please dont give any animal aspirin after surgery without talking it over with the vet- it is a blood thinner & can cause more problems. Know of a dog this was done to & she had a massive hematoma at the incision site. And she could have bled out. Esp since you dont know the dosage.

Vets DO give pain meds after surgery for animals, if yours did not, ask why... you may need another vet! There is no reason for the animal to be in pain after a surgical procedure. There are pain meds/patches now that are safe for animals. My dog was bit in the head(not bad)- massive hematoma that was just lanced & drained on its own. He came home & was on Rimadyl twice a day for 5 days.

let us know how you made out

The blanket seemed to help. They made it through the night with their little cries, but are much better today.

Thank you!

IF the animal is showing more than a little bit of discomfort, sheeesh the surgical cut SHOULD hurt, but if the pain is increasing or the animal seems lethargic or confused or the abdomin seems "board like" you need to get the animal to an emergency animal clinic.

this should help. animals, like people, can and do sometimeshave things go wrong with their surgeries.

Thanks about the er care, but he lives in the boonies about 2 hours from here. If he could have called a vet, that would be great. Sunday night no one is open. That is where the problem was. When I talked to him earlier, like around 4, he was ready to go to bed. Not much sleeping last night.

Is the vet not on-call after hours? I can call my vet anytime, 24/7 and get someone who is on call after the office closes.

They had some clinic in the area. His room mate dropped them off in the morning and he picked them up still pretty much asleep in the afternoon. He said that he was told they did like 60 or 80, sorry can't remember which, that day. He had no clue what the set up was like or he wouldn't have taken them there. I am sure that they are great doctors to work on Sunday and come to a small town etc. I am not trying to knock what they are doing, and animal control should be praised, but gosh I like to know I can call my vet if I have ANY questions. My cats always got pain meds and were about awake when I got them. When I heard the cries on the phone, it was so sad.

They are well today and that is what is important. He will keep a close watch on their incisions to make sure the redness goes away and there isn't any swelling.

He rescued these from a parking lot. His mom got a call about someone dumping kittens. He thought after he got them off the bottle he would give them away...don't we all think that

Benadryl. I used to work for the airlines in flight ops which involves some animal management since we were in a small station and cargo was next door (not to mention the cargo guys were HOT) anyways....

Benadryl. It knocks them right out. Most everyone who ships animals knocks them out with Benadryl and is told to do so by their vet. Use a child's size pill and cut it in pieces. Give pieces 15-20 minutes apart till you see the reaction. Once the cat passes out, you can stop.

I know it's days later and the cat is probably better now, but this is for future readers with the same issues:

never give a cat aspirin. Only in rare cases are cats prescribed aspirin, their body's do not metabolize it like humans. In fact, cats are very difficult to medicate and there aren't too many things OTC that you can give a cat! Please, never give a cat anything without your vet prescribing it!

Next, cats (and dogs) generally are not given pain meds to take home. Some vets may prescribe something, but many do not. Anesthesia is generally good for that first day and especially in cats, stays in their system a good 24 hours, sometimes longer.

After a human has surgery, we are told (and understand) when the doctor tells us to remain on bed rest, stay off your feet, lot's of rest, etc. Animals do not know this rule, it is up to the owner to make sure this happens. When our pets have surgery, post surgery instructions when they are discharged are basically the same with any surgery: watch for excessive swelling and redness at the incision. Prevent the pet from any jumping (on furniture, on steps, the bed, counters, etc.). Limit activity. Lock the pet in a small room for the first 24 hours (kennel, bathroom or other small room is ideal). Check the incision daily for discharge or if it is warm to the touch. Any excessive swelling, redness, red lines, discharge or it feels hot to the touch, call the vet immediately.

When we come home from having surgery, we feel the pain. We know that when we move a certain way, it hurts and we shouldn't do that and if we cover that pain too much, we can in turn hurt ourselves further, hindering our healing process and even possibly doing damage. Pets don't know this. Cats and dogs also have a higher pain tolerance than what you may think. When they jump on the couch and feel that pain, they know not to do that (this prevents internal injury as well as teaches them that "wow, that hurts, I better not do that right now").

A little pain is a good thing for this reason.

I have worked in a clinic and have met people who insisted on pain meds. When they come back for their post-op visit and their pet isn't up to par, this is why. Pets recover very fast and the pain meds cover the pain they need to feel in order to heal.

Hope this helps anyone.

Really great! Honestly should help, I know that it makes sense and if asked again, I will know.

I know when I tried to find anything online, I couldn't find anything. This should hopefully be googleable now.

Just got an update, the kitties are both doing really well. He thinks they are more affectionate today than ever.

Although this is a while ago, the principle holds. In an instance like this, when an animal is suffering, take it to an emergency vet clinic. Most if not all cities and large towns in the US now have an emergency vet clinic that is open on Sundays. In some places, the vet offices around town will take turns being open 24 hours so that there is coverage in your town. If you are rural, drive to the nearest large town if your vet is not accessible.

monfil,

I hope that the kittie is better.

Whenever I get into a situation like this, the last time was when my rottweiler up and ate a segment of my favorite jeans while I was doing laundry, I scoured the internet for information. You'll be surprised at the helpful advice there.

Because not all sites are trustworthy, try several sites, and operate on "convergence." If several sites that look trustworthy are saying the same thing, it's probable that the advice is good.

My sister is a cat rescuer, so I understand the problem that many rescuers face -- if you up and take a rescued doggie or kittie to an emergency clinic, you'll run out of money real quick. For some ailments, you have to do what you can at home, and sometimes that's all that is necessary. Of course, for severe conditions, why, emergency cat clinics during "off hours" is a necessary imperative.

I know this is an old post....but NEVER EVER give a pet Tylenol, apirin, or any meds created for human consumption!!!!!!!!!!!! It is extremely dangerous and life threatening!

There are shots a vet can administer for pain to a pet. And they're are emergency vet clnics out there.
