There are hundreds out there... team names that are either in really poor judgement, or just plain silly.

I came across one tonight that I just had to shake my head at: There's a school in Edmonton , the Edmonton Christian School. The school's team name is the Lions! The Christian Lions!!! I mean, come on people... think before you name your team.

There's also a swim team in Northern Alberta... I believe it's Spirit River.... named the Manatees! Now, doesn't that just strike fear into all the other swimmers. I mean, really ... when you think of a manatee, do you think of a fast-moving sea creature, or of a massive mound of blubber lying around, sunbathing in shallow waters?
I know which vision immediately pops to my mind when I think of manatees. Aren't they also known as sea cows?

There are also some good ones.. like the hockey team from Macon, Georgia ... the Macon Whoopie.

Any particularly bad - or good - team names from your area?

There was a Native American basketball team out here (boys) called the White Boys. They were trying to make a political statement about such offensive names as Warriors [I don't see that one] and Redskins [totaly see THAT one]. But what I wanted was for them to have a girls' team as well, and name them the "Lady White Boys"

How's about the Idaho Falls Chukars of baseball? The Montgomery Biscuits? I actually think "dumb" names are good names.

You whacky Canadians have two Rough Riders still in the CFL, don't you?

I wouldn't mind the Carolina Jaguars IF fans could pronounce it...

Nope only one Rough Riders team now... the one that spells it all as one word, the Saskatchewam Roughriders. That was the big difference. The Ottawa Rough Riders and Saskatchewan Roughriders
We also have the Hamilton Tiger Cats... like we'd mistake a tiger for a dog
(It's actually because there used to be two football teams in the area - the Tigers and the Wildcats - and they couldn’t agree on one or the other so they combined them.)
At least Toronto stopped short of calling its baseball team the Blue Jay Birds

I can think of one pro name that is stupid within itself.

Seattle Seahawks - WTF is a Seahawk, it's not even a real bird, It's a made up Hawk.

The Mighty Ducks are now just the Anaheim Ducks.

I also nominate the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They play in Anaheim, but for marketing purposes, they want to be known as the Los Angeles Angels. But they also don't want to outrage the local fans, so they tacked on "of Anaheim" for official purposes, even though they knew that everyone would refer to them as the L.A. Angels for the sake of simplicity.

Denver Nuggets....Everytime I hear that name, I think of McDonald's chicken nuggets with BBQ sauce. Do you remember their old uniforms with the rainbow color?

Some of the old baseball uniforms were pretty "out there” as well... the Astros come to mind.

Back to names: The California State University baseball team is called the Dirtbags

The University of California Santa Cruz Banana Slugs

Best of all: the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes. The story here goes (something like) the people in charge of naming the school team felt the college received too much money in sports funding, so they figured that if they named the team the Fighting Artichokes, athletes would not want to come to the school. At least that's the version I've heard.

Well, lets think:

The Los Angeles Lakers? Has anyone ever seen a lake in California? Does anyone in California know what a lake is? Seriously?

Although my favorite is a local High School near where I am. The Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms.

True. If not for the old Minneapolis Lakers before their move to California after the 1959-60 season. I'm not sure why they kept the name.

Even with the "mighty" gone from the Anaheim hockey team, I think there are better names than "Ducks."

One name I don't like is Raptors. Never liked that name.

I gotta admit that here in the states, there are some of the stupidest 'team' names around!

.....as someone already mentioned....the NHL has the "Anaheim Ducks".....give me a break man....how many times have they been referred to as the 'Anaheim Dycks'

In MLB...you got the Philly Phillies.........the Phillies???...comon now!....wouldn't it better if they were called the Fellas (or even the "GOOD Fellas")

As bad as the sea-hawks are.....the worse one in the NFL gotta be the New orleans "saints"...well saints they aint!.......the "ain'ts" is what they are commonly called".

..and what can we say about the green-bay packers....just what the hell are they packing (besides fudge) up in green bay area?

IMO......teams have to get away from naming themselves after animals......birds, cats, bears, wolves, etc..........its gotten very corny!
********
by the same token, we've also have a few of the best names!......1 of my favorites is the NFL SF 49ers............Now just think of how awesome it would have been be if they were named the SF 69ers instead!

The NBA gives us the St Antonio spurs.......how great would it be if they were renamed as the St Antonio sperms.........macho as hell!

Oakland raiders is also a good one.....as are the Buffalo bills.....too bad they both stink!

I have, in fact quite a few.

There are several hundred lakes in CA. Seriously!

I don’t know if these are bad, but in my view they are funny. There are many youth teams that use “Dirtbags” as their name…one of the more successful is out of NC. They have played in many tournaments and Championships, almost all of their players get recruited by big colleges and some have been signed by ML teams. The Long Beach 49ers also use “Dirtbags” as a nickname. How would you like to have the word "Dirtbag" on your career history.

I have always like the Toledo Mudhens and another team I have read about recently the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, a minor league affiliate of the Phillies.

In my opinion a crappy name is the Montgomery Biscuits, a minor league affiliate of the TB Rays.

In the “unoriginal” category, the Houston Texans.

The Utah Jazz were formally the New Orleans Jazz. Why they kept the name is anyone's guess. Ths Sacramento Kings are a contradiction. Kings of what? Certainly not the court.

The Houston Texans are the least creative name out there. Every fan who goes to a home game can double as the mascot. But, this is is a city who was named the Oilers. Must be Bush country. The Texans are as creative as Oklahoma's license plate: Oklahoma is OK!

New York Knicks....(Knickerbocker) Silly name.

Miami Dolphins also seems silly to me too. I think of the movie Beddazzle when the guy was offerring the girl some dolphin safe tuna....I don't know, its just a weird name.

That's the same with the Calgary Flames (NHL). The franchise originated in Atlanta, giving the team name "Flames" some credence. Why Calgary kept it is beyond me. The most famous fire in Calgary is the Olympic torch and the Flames were in Calgary for a year before the Olympic bid was awarded.

Oh I have 2!
My father went to Greece Athena High school (This is in Rochester New York). They chose the name....Trojans XD
http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/ath/Clubs/trojantribune.html

And then the Fisher Illinois...Bunnies. I'm not kidding the fisher bunnies.

I believe there was a mascot that was either like a mule or some sterile animal, and they called the girl's team "The Lady Mules" I imagine the insinuation that they are a sterile beast of burden didn't go over very well with the players.

I think they kept it because Calgary is in oil country and they referenced the nickname to oil well fires.

Cincinnati Bengals

Has anyone ever seen a wild Bengal Tiger in the state of Ohio before or even in the western hemisphere for that matter?

What about the 49er's where did they get that one from? Now the 69er's I think we all could relate.

49ers were gold prospectors who joined the California gold rush in 1849 (and for a few years thereafter). I suppose the team name could have been different if the gold rush happened 20 years later. There's also the Philadelphia 76ers and a junior hockey team, the Ottawa 67s.

I always thought St. Louis Blues was a good team name. Its a type of music with a rich history and it comes with its own logo and colour.
