don't you think that if the world was really in fact going broke.. that people wouldn't spend so much time or money.. in the pubs..
not just singles in there either.. so don't use that excuse...
I really don't think that this economy issue has effected their business all that much if at all..
any servers .. or bartenders out there to comment on that??

Saw a show on women in cosmetics last evening...Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden... turns out cosmetics sales soared during the Great Depression. It was an indulgence that was affordable....women thought they deserved a treat....they could not go out and buy the latest fashions or anything extravagant...but a lipstick or a jar of moisturizer made them escape and feel good.
Booze...cosmetics....can't recall what the other item was...but anyhow...it was a cheap escape... a feel good item that was cheaper than a vacation, a new car, a big ticket item.
It shows that you still have the money to have fun.
same with gambling...like slots...small change for a big dream...escape...lottery tickets.

Posted: 3/25/2009 10:31:38 PM | There have been lots of books and blogs written about the continued need to socialize in bad times.... two areas that seem not to suffer when the economy sucks... liquor and prostitution... or so I have heard
I manage a bar and I wonder what people are giving up to go out... but then, being alone at home makes the bad times worse... yet here I am, on my night off, sitting here perusing the POF Forums... sad but true

Posted: 3/26/2009 3:39:20 AM | Personally ive been cutting back on the nights out, as i can no longer be confident of finding part time work to fund those nights out. ive started using pof more to replace the nights out. i can still meet women on here. the bars must be getting quieter as the majority have stopped recruiting staff, and some are reducing staff numbers.
As for people in relationships going out still. they still need to have nights out together. a pub is a cheaper option.

Im from Downunder.......and,apparently sales of confectionary,in particular Easter eggs (already),cosmetics and wine have all increased. Seems people still feel the need to spoil themselves a little, even during hard times....
Cheers!

Pub food is great ... cheap wing nights & food specials ... an unlimited supply of ... casual, relaxing atmosphere ... great place to hang out with friends, family or to meet for that first date (or 2nd or 3rd, etc.) ... you can talk loudly, laugh loudly & be a little nutty without getting kicked out like in a restaurant ... there's one or more pubs in just about every neighbourhood ... nobody wants to cook after working all day ... & everyone knows that bartenders are also supposed to double as counselors & their real job is to listen to you vent.

going to the pub to make amends while remaining anonymous to the tax man
liquor tax, gst, pst, increase the taxes payable by pub owner and staff
many other benefits as well: entertainment; you can also throw all the rest of not needed cash and play bingo, poker, returning much needed revenue to the government
good for the health: moral; effect of alcohol is greater and all positive than the results councilors and shrinks have physical;
beer and wine increase fluid levels, end up flushing the system, in extreme cases a real cleansing
great prostate test, generally accepted as more pleasant than the finger
great exercise (save money for gym) for wrists, arms and neck, legs from jogging to the loo and waiting in line
long term the liver will go and you will reincarnate to a yeast, hopefully before collecting your pension
mental; eventually alcohol will kill those little nasty brain cells that make you think, worry or god forbid reason
It's all good, cheers | |

YUP, life goes on, even with a bad economy, people will find ways of doing things no matter what.
Whether it be out at a pub, having a few drinks with a few friends, or no matter what it is.

Or maybe, the ones out having a good time have a good job and deserve to have fun! It's all in the eye of the beholder...

Life seems to be going on normally for most people I know, so I think the recession may be having less impact on us than people in the USA.

And people wonder why I drink in my backyard,,
George Throughogood, You and I could kick it back old school one weekend.
I doubt if anyone would remember this BUT you could ask for home delivery back in the day from a few lower mainland breweries.

Posted: 3/27/2009 9:32:07 PM | Wealthy or not, employed or not, people are still going to frequent pubs and other such establishments. Add to that the fact that many 'choose' to drive there, being able to afford gas and insurance, AND they are generally brazen enough to drive back home while fully aware that they are likely over the legal limit. Always will wonder why there are parking lots at 'neighbourhood pubs'. How many of us drive there and only have one drink? What's the point of that? Of course it's cheaper to drink at home but that's not being very social is it? And, if unemployed and not drinking, there's also the bingo halls and casinos. But, the line has to be drawn so I challenge everyone who cannot afford the misc. decant luxuries to leave the car at home and WALK to the nearest 7 - 11 to purchase your lottery tickets.
