| Best way to increase cardio in 3 weeks... Posted: 3/27/2009 9:20:41 PM | In 25 days my daughter goes into hockey try-outs – a grueling 7-10 day period where she will be skating flat out for an hour and a half each night. In addition to about 3 days/wk on the ice, she’s been working about 2 days/wk in the gym since January… mostly core strength (weights) and a little cardio. She wants to get to a higher level this year and will need to bring quickness and stamina in order to do it.
Her cardio is not good enough: at her current fitness level she won’t be able to skate with intensity for 1.5 hours and do it night after night.
What can she do to get the best results in about 3 weeks?

Posted: 3/28/2009 11:11:26 AM | | Sport specific training for hockey --- hockey involves short bursts of power and speed, performed mainly in the lactate zone. Cardio should primarily focus on sprint-type training. Even though she will be on the ice for 1.5hrs at a time, the drills themselves will be of the sprint-glide-rest nature, so she should be focusing on cardio that helps with that activity.

Wind-sprints on grass would be good. Google up "running speedwork" or "interval runs." Make sure she has proper lightweight running shoes or (if on grass) racing flats...go to a specialized running store.
