*DERBY MAY PARTY*. Zanzibar, London Road. *FRIDAY* MAY 15th
Posted: 4/5/2009 5:24:21 AM
Hi Folks

Having confirmed the above date with the club, off we go again for some more Derby fun. Please read all details in Post No.1 above before signing up to or attending this event.

OPTIONAL FANCY DRESS: WHAT THEME THIS TIME?

Would-be newcomers please rest assured that fancy dress is entirely optional at Derby-based events. We tend to see between 5 and 20% of the overall attendance participate just for the fun of it. Champagne prizes are also on offer for those who make the effort. The choice, as always, is entirely yours. For details on the normal club dress code, please read Post No.1 above.

Anyway. In the absence of checking back through around a-dozen Zanzibar signup threads since we began in December 2007, I recall past themes have included Vicars & Tarts, Cowboys & Indians, Wizard of Oz, St. Trinians (twice) and obviously Christmas, Halloween, and Valentines where appropriate.

Whilst I like to see and fully appreciate the effort some of you make to look the part on the night, not being remotely into dressing in costume myself means I’m running out of ideas. All I can think of at the moment is Hawaiian, Pirates or even Screen Icons (of TV or Cinema).

The latter I feel gives fantastic scope for attendees to dress as the likes of James Bond, Super Man, Super Woman, Marilyn Monroe, Long john Silver, Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook, Peter Pan, any Disney/Cartoon Character, Batman or Robin, etc., etc. The list would be endless and, to some degree, would add an element of intrigue and might prompt a few participants to keep their costumes secret until the night.

Much to my appreciation, a pyjama theme has also been suggested. Being the red-blooded type male that I am, the thought of seeing a few ladies waltzing around the club in negligees and high-heeled slippers would go down a treat. Seriously though. I guess a PJ party would be relatively inexpensive too – especially for any participants on a costume budget.

Any thoughts and ideas will be most gratefully received, either here or via private mail directly to me. I’ll give it a week or so before updating Post No.1 with the most popular choice.

So, hope to see you all again on Friday the 15th of May.

Regards as always

Dear Nightwisher. Rest assured that by the time Friday May the 15th arrives, Derby will be good and ready for your visit.

To all,

Nice to see the numbers creeping up in typical steady fashion before the mass mail release. Plus, of course, it’s always encouraging to see previous newcomers returning to events too, namely ‘eatongirl’ up to now. I guess the good lady enjoyed our last Zanzibar do sufficiently well to warrant her return to this next one, which is great to see.

I think it’s easy for some of us to forget that we were all first-time POF partygoers at one stage. And although these events can never be to everyone’s liking, it’s testament to a regularly held party’s success when attendees return to re-acquaint themselves with friends that can so easily be made from the outset.

Thanks to all having signed up so far.

PS. Just in case you were not aware. After this event at Zanzibar on *Friday* May the 15th, we’ll be partying in a new venue on *Saturday* the 4th of July. For details on the upcoming 4th of July party, simply click on the link directly below:

http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12124079.aspx

Oh yeah, and if you fancy joining us for a picnic in Markeaton Park on *Sunday* the 10th of May, you’ll find relevant details and the signup button here:

http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12129264.aspx

Don’t get your days, times and dates mixed up now.

Cheers

Dear reiner4

For the benefit of your inquisitive self and any other newcomers, I’ve copied and pasted message No.10 that I penned for our previous promotional party thread held on March the 27th.

“Apprehensive about attending your first POF event? Don’t worry. Consider the following points seriously and you’re likely to gain the most from the experience.

“Although a 'minority' of attendees could be antisocial fuddy-duddies, rest assured that a HUGE majority of POF partygoers are very friendly, approachable folks – particularly those found in Derby!

“Whether you’re attending alone or with guests, you could make use of the pre-meet drinking session arranged at the Royal Telegraph pub (see post No.1 for details). Evidence suggests that some attendees find the pre-meet useful for breaking the ice before moving on to the nightclub. Others prefer to simply head straight to the main event. Either way, you’ll soon settle in and become a valuable contributor to the friendly atmosphere that is now synonymous with Derby-based POF parties.

“Account for the fact that you will not be alone in being alone. Many newcomers attend all events, so you will already have common ground on which to base communication with any partygoer (s). Hence, don’t hesitate to approach anyone to whom you’d like to chat and ask something like the following question. “Hi. I’m so-and-so. This is my first POF event and I really don’t know what to expect. Have you been to anything like this before?”

“Yes folks, although you may have to summon a little courage to spill those words to a stranger (s), breaking the ice really is that simple. Believe me, that one question can lead to an entire evening of conversation with any number of attendees.

“Most importantly of all, however, please, please, please DON’T stand in a corner like a pot plant (at least not unless you can look happy whilst doing so ). You and you alone hold the key to your own enjoyment from a social perspective. You will therefore only get from events what you are prepared to invest in them. Hence, say nothing to anyone, or stand there with a face as miserable as bulldog chewing a wasp all evening, and you’ll gain nothing whatsoever from your event experience. Consequently, on leaving the event, any critical views you are likely to have developed as a result of your own unsociable behaviour will be wildly inaccurate and therefore misplaced if repeated.

“So, before you become one of those self-appointed POF event critics – based on one party experience at which you made no effort to mingle – give both yourself and others a realistic chance to interact. To be fair, that may mean your attending at least a few events before deciding they are or are not for you.

“The thing to remember is that if you’re rude and/or miserable, you’re likely only to attract attention from other rude or miserable folks in return (that’s assuming, of course, that you can find any of the usually happy POFers to share in your self-imposed misery ).

“On the other hand, show up in view of being as friendly and approachable as the majority crowd and you’re virtually guaranteed to enjoy your experience so much that you’ll return over and over again to party with your newfound friends. Plus, of course, if you’re really lucky, you could meet the partner of your wildest dreams and live happily ever after in that mortgage-free ivory tower of yours.”

Hopefully the above will help from the perspective of what to expect in return for your own efforts. If I can be of further assistance, feel free to mail me privately and I’ll attempt to settle any queries that aren’t covered elsewhere on this thread.

For the record, before signing up, please read message No.1 in its entirety before asking questions already answered there. Thanks to all having signed up so far.

Look forward to seeing everyone on Friday the 15th of May.

Regards

Unfortunately i won't be able to attend this one due to the fact that.......at 11am that morning i will be boarding a national express coach in birmingham and will be Cornwall bound for a week and a bit's holiday in St Ives and by the time this party is starting i will be ordering a well deserved drink of something at the bar of my fave harbour-side pub and listening to whatever band they've hopefully got on.
But i'm sure everyone will have a great time.
Hopefully see you at the next one.
All the best.

Hi All

Just a flying visit with an update on the 'optional' fancy dress theme. Hence the relevant section of message No.1 now reads as follows:

"As usual, FANCY DRESS IS 'OPTIONAL' and always encouraged. The theme for this one is HAWAIIAN, with champagne prizes up for grabs in each male and female category."

So, come the evening of Friday May the 15th, I wonder how many grass skirts and fancy patterned shirts we’ll see?

Catch ya later folks

Hey RockChick, it would be good if you do manage to pop along to sample your first event with us, and rest assured that we'd love to see you make the evening.

I live in ripley and wondered if there is anyone local who would not mind if I tagged along with them, as would love to make some new friends too.

Ah, good old Ripley, eh? I was born and raised there and still hold a fondness for the town - although I've never actually understood why so many folks enjoy the pub crawling sessions that attract so many revellers from far and wide on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Still, as they say, each to his or her own. And it wouldn't do for us all to like the same things. Hope you manage to find that someone with whom you can tag along to Derby on May 15th. If not though, don't let it stop you coming on your little Jack Jones. If you feel apprehensive about attending alone, do as many first-timers do and head for the pre-meet drinking session at the Telegraph pub as a way of breaking the ice before the main club event.

Enter with every intention of mixing with other friendly attendees and you'll be fine. Trust me. For the record, dear lady, you should find all relevant details in post No.1 above.

Thanks again to all having signed up so far.

No worries Mushy. I guess that just like the proverbial boomerang, you're one of those POFers who's destined to return to the fold now and again. Rest assured that as applies to any member that sees fit to come back and party their blues away, a consolation drink and warm welcome back awaits you.

Hi Everyone

Don’t forget that FANCY DRESS is purely OPTIONAL at POF parties – INCLUDING THIS ONE. An average of 10 to 15% of attendees like to indulge whilst the rest of us dress as we would normally on an evening out. Hence, never feel pressured to come to any POF event in anything but your favoured attire. As long as you meet with the establishment’s basic, smart/casual dress code, you’ll gain entry on the night.

Having received a few enquires from guys requesting ideas in respect of the optional Hawaiian theme, you might like to consider the following. ALOHA Shirt (fancy, flowery, leafy garment) in the colour and pattern of your choice. LEI (a flowery, leafy, frilly wreath thingy) to drape around your neck. Plus of course, if you have the legs for ‘em, a pair of shorts is an additional option to complete the costume, as I suppose is dressing in Hawaiian drag if you’re a guy who’s really brave and daring.

I doubt that the ladies will be stuck for ideas. If they were though, perhaps they’d like to share a few suggestions here. Either way, I’m sure typing in Hawaiian fancy dress to Google will pay dividends to anyone who fancies being in the minority who like to indulge in our light-hearted and always entirely optional themes.

Nice to see the signup list rising steadily. Please feel free to keep adding your names, good people. I’m sure we’ll be in for another splendid and friendly evening, where new love could blossom for the luckier attendees amongst us.

Regards

Welcome aboard Trucker Craig.

I have little doubt that just like most other newcomers who attend the party on the 15th - or any other POF event for that matter - you'll be fine. If for any reason you're apprehensive about coming along, however, you might like to read my message No.6 above for an idea of what to expect from your initial experience. Come to think of it, any other newbies browsing these pages might also benefit from reading the same message.

Thanks again to everyone having signed up so far.

Cheers for now.

Onepinkbit and rockchick66. Great to see two local members communicating to help each other settle in. It will be nice to see you both at the event and, judging by the fact that you’re obviously both approachable people, I’m sure you’ll get the best from the evening and end up making some new friends for your obvious efforts to be sociable, which is naturally the key to every attendee’s enjoyment.

Keep adding your names to the list, good people. In all likelihood, another super duper and friendly Derby party is now well and truly in the offing.

See y' all later.

Hi all

Just popped in to say a huge THANK YOU again to everyone who’s signed up to the Zanzibar party. I can also bring to your attention three more upcoming local events scheduled in date order. Simply click the link below each heading to go straight to message No.1 of the relevant event thread, where you can read all details and sign up as instructed:

*DERBY PICNIC* MARKEATON PARK *SUNDAY* MAY 10th, from 2.30 pm. Attend alone or with your family and friends if they fancy it. No age restrictions here, so children are welcome too, but no dogs or barbecues please:
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12129264.aspx

DERBY BBQ & Profile Photo Event. MACKWORTH Hotel. Ashbourne Rd. DE22 4LY. *Sunday* June 14th. A barbecue event with an ‘optional’ twist. As this is a daytime event, members are welcome to add their children as guests too if they wish:
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12216027.aspx

DERBY JULY PARTY *New Venue* SYN NIGHTCLUB. Colyear Street. *SATURDAY* JULY 4th: STRICTLY OVER 18s ONLY. POF’s debut party at Syn (formerly the Pink Coconut) could well be a real cracker!

Hey babygirlcharly. Good of you to sign up and brave the event as yet another newcomer. And even better that you're bringing a guest along too.

Although from a breaking the ice persepctive it might be better if you did make the pre-meet drinks, I'm sure you'll be equally fine if you come straight to the club. Rest assured that most of the Derby crowd are friendly and approachable folks, and like many who attend for the first time, I guess you'll be keen to come back and join us after your initial experience.

For the record, if you haven't already done so, you might like to read my message No.6 above, which I penned for the benefit of members attending a POF event for the first time.

See you later and thanks again to everyone having signed up so far.

No worries Diane33xx. Glad to note you’re looking forward to it. I’m also confident that like most newcomers who attend POF events virtually anywhere in the world, and especially at Derby UK, you’re almost certain to make new friends from the new folks you’ll meet on Friday the 15th. Thanks for signing up.

hi my friend and i are new comers so come and see and say hello

Dear Blossom39. Much of my above reply to Diane obviously applies to your good self from a newcomer’s perspective and we look forward to seeing you and your friend on the 15th. Don’t forget to add your name to the signup list though. For the benefit of anyone who may be unsure of the process, simply follow the instructions below.

HOW TO SIGN UP TO EVENTS

For the record, SIGNING UP to any POF event is easy and there are two ways of which I’m aware that members can add themselves to the list.

1st: Once you’ve gained access to the opening post of the party thread, and after reading all relevant details, simply scroll down until you reach the top row of attendees' photos. Just above this you’ll see a button that clearly says, “Sign up to this party (login first)”. Click the button and, if requested, log in your username and password. All you need to do then is check whether your name and chosen profile image is amongst those members already signed up. Job done.

2nd: Having gained access to post No1 of the thread promoting the party, scroll to the top right-hand corner and click the ‘login icon’. Now scroll back down the page to locate the signup button just above the top row of attendees already listed, click it and your chosen profile image will then be present amongst the others. You’re now signed up, but please ensure you read all relevant event details in the opening post before raising any questions that are almost sure to be answered there.

Thank you again to everyone having added their names so far. Up to now, complete with guests, the potential number of attendees rests at 81, which, with over a week left before the event, looks very promising indeed. Please feel free to add your names to the list folks. Absolutely everyone is welcome to join us.

Cheers for now
