| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/19/2009 7:56:46 AM | OK exactly how much money did the city put forth to have THAT train wreck built? Has anyone else seen this eyesore? It looks like a pile of twisted metal, ready to collapse. Now, I'll be the first to admit to not having the most artistically gifted eye, but holy crap (as Ray's dad would say)... what a load of ...well... crap! Artistic? Sure. They should call it "Aftershock" because it sure reminds me of remnants of an earthquake. | |

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/19/2009 10:46:09 AM | They're rebuilding it on Churchhill Square... but I drove by there last week and its nowhere near being finished yet. I've seen some pics on their website though: http://www.artgalleryalberta.com/content/view/66/104/
I think the new gallery looks pretty cool, and I'm very excited to check it out when it opens (early 2010).

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/19/2009 9:21:21 PM | | OK well the fact that it's still a year away from completion makes me feel somewhat better. I was told by the people I was with that it was supposed to open in June of 09. The artist's conception on the link you supplied certainly looks a whole lot better than my vision of what it would look lik ein two months ha ha | |

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/20/2009 5:08:18 AM | yep rbg, i drove past that a few wks ago, i realize its in the "building "stage.however damn , i guess we know where the money is being siphoned off to, insane architects lol.
its no different than the new carpenters union hall they built for 42 million dollars, its another wreck. funny thing about the hall is that the window that actually caters to the members, is about a 3x4 opening and the rest of the building is devoted to the upper crust. itll be interesting to see tho when it is competed as to how much actual space has been set aside for the usage of the regular patrons rather than the upper crust of the artwork society

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/20/2009 10:15:51 AM | Wonder if they will serve breast milk cheese on toast at the grand opening day like the Mexican artist Raul Ortega Ayala did at a art exhibit in London England
good greif

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/20/2009 10:53:53 AM | Seems to me that, being as we are human, human breastmilk cheese would be more natural than that of a cow... But still, eeew. Yay art.
I used to take art classes at the old gallery all the time. I haven't been there since they temporarily moved it... but once the new building opens up, I will definitely be signing up for more classes.

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 4/20/2009 3:28:24 PM | Yeah, it's funny we go eww yuck about human milk and not cow's milk. Wait! I go eww yuck about cow's milk... Cheese...now that's another story...yum. Wait! Cheese is made from milk! *shudder | |

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 5/10/2009 7:04:20 PM | I love the look of the gallery. Why must all buildings look Stalinistic to make people happy?
People complain when older buildings are torn down in Edmonton yet, complain when new ones that have style are built.
My thoughts on this are, lets make Edmonton buildings something to see and admire. they dont all have to be square cheaply built places.
In all probability i will never visit the art gallery. it isnt what I do. but, Anything that puts Edmonton on the map and draws visitors is good for the city.
I am not a visitor to the city. I have lived here most of my life and am very pro- Edmonton.
Think ahead, when tourists come here they want to see interesting places... not just cheaply built square blocks.
If that is what you want, then move to Hamilton.
BTW, the gallery is mostly funded by the province and not the city. Hence the name "Alberta art gallery".

Artistic licence Cost of rebuilding downtown art gallery soars to $88M By FRANK LANDRY, CITY HALL BUREAU
Tony Lippino, executive director of the Art Gallery of Alberta, shows a model of the rebuilt gallery that's proposed for the 99 Street and 102A Avenue location. (WALTER TYCHNOWICZ, SUN)
The cost of rebuilding the Art Gallery of Alberta has soared a whopping 55% since 2005 - and it looks like taxpayers will be stuck picking up most of the $88-million tab.
Tony Luppino, the gallery's executive director, said a world-class art facility should be a "pressing priority" for the city. But critics say it's a frivolous expense that should be put on the backburner in favour of much-needed road improvements.
"This is not a frill," Luppino told the Sun yesterday.
"I think that is just a crazy argument when people say things like that. This is essential to attracting the population we need to keep this province growing."
The cost of rebuilding the art gallery at 99 Street and 102A Avenue is now estimated at $88 million, up from from $57 million, according to a new city document.
The province's super-heated economy is being blamed for the massive spike.
With construction slated to begin this spring, Luppino will ask council on Tuesday to increase its contribution to $21 million, up from $6 million.
Similar requests will be made from the provincial and federal governments.
The gallery is also ramping up its own fundraising efforts. So far $10 million has been raised in private donations.
Scott Hennig, with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said the city should concentrate on providing core services rather than doling out arts funding. He said a new overpass on 23 Avenue at Calgary Trail should be a more pressing priority.
"That would certainly rank a lot higher on a lot of people's priority lists than the art gallery," Hennig said.
Coun. Kim Krushell said $15 million seems a tad steep.
"That being said I really would like to see the art gallery go ahead," she said.
Coun. Mike Nickel said both the gallery expansion and an overpass on 23 Avenue are necessary.
The existing 50,000-square-foot building will morph into an 80,000-square-foot landmark - an ultra-modern structure of glass, steel and brick. It would open in 2009.
wow 88 million dollars and counting, for a gallery devoted to displaying the crap we wouldnt put on our refrigerator doors. AND THAT ISNT EVEN THE END COST, JUST AN ADDITION it could surpass 100 million dollars 88 million dollars that could have been spent or delegated to actually taking care of the homeless. providing them with shelters and proper training to enter the workforce and become actual taxpayers.
anyone know how many homeless people could be housed in the winter in an 80 000 square foot auditorium?or shall we just wait and see how many of them end up as dead popsickles laying on street corners next winter
of course the freewheeling council members would love to see this money pit go ahead, as it will be a haven for the morally decrepit for several years to come, or at least until the next group of pate eating wine sniffing morons comes into power and wants a fancier craphole to dangle their watercolor and feces in a jar displays .

| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 5/10/2009 8:33:38 PM | So you would rather the money be spent on the homeless?
There is already a lot more money spent on "training" the homeless to enter the workforce. It does not work. They do NOT want to work and do NOT pay taxes.
We as Edmonton tax payers... could spend all our civic taxes to do what we can for the homeless..
we already do. why do you think Edmonton has such a massive homeless population?
ever heard the saying "if you build it, they will come"?
yah... we cater to the homeless and then complain when they come here.
ask St. Albert, Sherwood Park......... Stony Plain, Spruce grove... etc...
how is their homeless problem?
They do not have a problem because they have nothing there for them (no shelters, programs or pity)
Dunno bout you but, I would rather see my taxes make a profit.

There is already a lot more money spent on "training" the homeless to enter the workforce. There has been more than $88M spent on training the homeless in Edmonton? Break that down for me, please.
yah... we cater to the homeless and then complain when they come here. We cater to the homeless? Where are you getting that from? The governments in Canada cater more to the rich than they do to the poor. Always have. Likely always will.
why do you think Edmonton has such a massive homeless population? ever heard the saying "if you build it, they will come"? Oh yeah... because if I were homeless, living in an area that boasts -30c temps for three months of the year is EXACTLY where I want to live. There are more homeless on the West Coast than antywhere in Canada.
Dunno bout you but, I would rather see my taxes make a profit. Taxes are not supposed to make a profit. Taxes are supposed to maintain a society... at least that's what I have been led to believe. Also, you'll have to explain to me how the Edmonton Art Gallery will ever turn a profit off an $88M tax grab.
|
| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 5/10/2009 10:34:40 PM | | A costly facelift it will be......Crack heads and drunk waste that permeates the area will remain and linger for years to come, as an eyesore.. | |
|
| Edmonton Art Gallery... what the heck??? Posted: 5/10/2009 11:08:55 PM | Well at least Edmonton has a civic art gallery. That is a lot more than what we can saw in Calgary. It is going to be a building that will be a tourist attraction, that is a good thing.
I actually like that there is a bit of controversy about people saying it looks like at train wreck, at least they are talking about art and the public gallery unlike Calgary.
