| | The names we give our childrenPage 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | Just wondering as Im often found to be doing, did you name your child(ren) before birth or did you name them after birth.
Why did you choose the name, how difficult was it to settle on a name?
If you dont have children what names would you like your offspring to be called?
Are you happy with your own name, if not what would you prefer to be called?
I was over ruled on both the firts names I wanted for my children, I wanted to call my daughter Erin, and my son Indiana (he was always going to have James as his middle name, as its also mine) Indiana James after my childhood hero. I had to agree to Asia and Jude which Im very happy with and would'nt wish them to be called anything else now.

Mind you - will be interesting in years to come when there are old people's homes full of Lambretta's, Diesals and Vespa's..........and yep they are all real names at a local primary school.
No idea really why we chose our kids names - we just liked them

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 10:43:54 AM | I was convinced my first child was a boy, hadn't even picked a name for a girl so she was nameless for a while! Decided on Zoe (which means life, and she is certainly full of that) and gave her Anna as a middle name which is my sisters name
My youngest I called Holly just because I liked the name and her middle name is Elizabeth after her great-gran who is still alive and kicking and adores her little namesake
My name, Natalie, means birthday of the Lord, as I was born within the 12 days of Christmas ... so the only reason I'd like to change it is to have a birthday in the summer instead of a few days after New Year

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 10:51:26 AM | Both my children are girls, and their fathers (different dads, 9 years apart - no baby daddy drama so no flaming) insisted on boys - so when they both turned out to be girls, I pretty much got free reign on naming. My daughter's name is my maiden name, with her middle name of my mothers - in her memory, so essentially she's named after my mother, backwards. When my youngest was born, my ex and I had decided against the name I chose, because neither of us like the nicknames associated with it. Under the influence of drugs, I changed my mind. It suits her, and we just never shorten it. I recall once while bartending, a man came in talking about his girlfriend being pregnant and he was going to name the baby Turquoise if it was a girl. I begged him not to - that poor kid would be Turkey her whole life! | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 10:54:15 AM | I have a list of names planned out.
Harry, George, Arthur, Alfie and some kind of variation of Henry/Henri/Henrick
Clearly not wanting a little girl..

When expecting my eldest my husband and I (sound like the Queen lol) chose Lee for a boy and Gemma for a girl but my then brother in law called his baby Lee (born 2 months before mine) so we decided on Jason. Whilst in the hospital every little girl about 4 or 5 years old coming to visit their mum was called Gemma which put me right off. Fortunately it was a boy otherwise I've no idea what name we'd have chosen.
Both before and after my youngest was born I couldn't get my partner to agree on any name (he wouldn't let me call him Hendrix ) he didn't get a name until 10 days after he was born. A good friend and neighbour would come round every day and say it's our......whatever name he liked that day finally we settled on Joseph or Joe as we call him.
As for my name Kathryn Ann, my mum wanted to call me Joanne but my Dad didn't like it and as he was the one who went to register me he changed it, the registrar must have come up with the spelling as my Dad couldn't spell. It gets shortened to Kat, Kate & Kath which I don't really mind but dislike Kathy, have been called worse things. Incidently my Dad had two birthdays, he was actually born in early September but if they weren't registered within a certain time limit they were fined in the bad old days so his D.O.B. according to his birth certificate is 1st October.

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 11:07:46 AM | i was 6 months in the club when my wee bro laurie was killed in a car accident , so said then if it,s a baby boy he will be called laurie, and it was. another little laurie was a blessing for my mum n dad. helped them a lot. if it had been a girl i had chose francesca just because i liked it. | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 11:12:56 AM | I chose a very individual name for my child's middle name as I liked it and it had a family connection on his dads side. | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 11:44:34 AM | One of my sons has the same initials as Elvis Presley, blame my hubby for that one. And... he also named his first born son from first marriage by the name Elvis Aaron.. surname started with a P.!
Two of my sons are named after angels. My daughter is not tonight.. Josephine! shortened to various things. Eldest son was going to be named Levi Frank... but we changed our minds on that one and called him Greg.
I changed my name as it's part of my spiritual path of becoming aware in this lifetime, and tbh I prefer my new name to my birth name, it's much nicer, and also very different.

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 11:47:18 AM | | I had Daisy picked out for a girl and George for a boy, but when she came out she was def not a *daisy* shes def a Holly and shes just turned 17 :) weird thing is that name never ever occured to me when pregnant just *knew* when she was born. | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 11:54:46 AM | My ex and I had decided on our first son's name - Fionn - before his birth. He was born prematurely and fought hard to survive, so the name's meaning ("fair-haired warrior") fit. But for some bizarre reason, we changed it to "Finlay" at the 11th hour. I still call him Finn, but dropped the traditional Irish "o" so my family back in California wouldn't screech, "Fee-ONN? What kinda name is that?!?!?!" lol
My second son was named after Liam O'Maonlai, the lead singer of Hothouse Flowers - I love his voice! My ex was against it - it reminded him of Liam Gallagher. Thankfully, LG has slipped back into richly deserved obscurity.
If I ever have a daughter, she'll be Phoebe Rhiannon.

I thought of names for my children before they were born.
I wanted to call my eldest Oriana if he'd been a girl and the youngest Chloe Grace,it wouldnt have suited anyway lol, but as they were both boys i couldnt
I don't like my name but i do use a different one for dancing :)

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 12:38:19 PM | Apparently I was Jonathan right up until I was born! My Dad got to choose my name as my Mum named my brother, but if she'd had a say I would have been Sarah. Don't think I'd have minded either way... Fairly happy with what I got. | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 12:51:15 PM | Prior to the birth of our firstborn , my ex and I were convinced we were to be blessed with a girl and spent ages deciding on names and ended up with Niamh Siobhann, beautiful Celtic names. With hindsight Neeve and Shivon would have been difficult to live with..........
As it turned out a son was born and named after the nurse who brought him into this world - Christopher.
A very fine name and a very fine man.

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 1:21:27 PM | | My two children are a pair of****r spaniels and I was inspired by my favourite movie to call them Bill & Kill | |
|
| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 5:44:15 PM | | my family's tradition has been for a boy to be named after the father and father in law and for girls to be named after the mother and mother in law (within reason) other children will carry other relatives names. it reminds us of where we come from. | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/23/2009 11:52:45 PM | When i had the boys they were both named before they were born but in my mind Marlon was a girl so,he had a girls name in his dads he was a Marlon tho as i chose the other boys name Cailem so instead of Abrah and Cailem we had Marlon and Cailem. And i'm really glad as i would never call a kid Abrah now so he had a luckky escape. | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/24/2009 2:26:27 AM | | MY sons called george after my father [a lovely man] my daughter however was a more difficult one ....the two names in the offing were Lauren and Rose when she was born we opted for Rose and her gran run away telling all and sundry ..... but unbeknown to her we changed our minds and Lauren she is ........Lauren Anne Blanche the Blanche is what i used to call my ex when she behaved like an old Bint....so i wanted it as a name for me daughter so one day when she gets married and im footing the bill at least i'll have a moments pleasure watching her squirm at the altar as the priest announces her full name ......... | |

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/24/2009 6:33:40 AM | We chose names for one before birth but once the baby arrived the names just didn’t suit so changed our minds, the second one was to be named by the first one, but when the baby was born we just couldn’t honour our agreement as our elder child proudly announced that the new baby was to be called “Dartanian”. He was nameless for 3 weeks, and was just the baby until something came to mind.
Tip – never promise an older child that he/she can pick the name for the new baby

| The names we give our children Posted: 4/24/2009 7:49:51 AM | Being a fan of the TV show '24' i wanted to call my son Keifer. However ,his Mum is a big fan of the show 'Lost' and wanted to call him Sawyer. In the end we came to a compromise. Both being avid watchers of Coronation Street we called him Ken Barlow.
