| Special Occasions Posted: 5/4/2009 3:25:04 PM | | How do you celebrate special occasions? Or do you ? Birthdays, holidays, Mom's day, Dad's day etc... Do you go all out with the streamers , balloons, presents and cake? Or do you maybe just buy a little something? OR Is it all silly and a waste of time/money? I suppose as we get older for some it loses its appeal? Do you think all this "hooplah" should be reserved for kids only? or what? | |

| Special Occasions Posted: 5/4/2009 9:38:24 PM | I make a big hoopla when it is for someone besides me.
I have been known to blow up 100 pink balloons and string them on the cherry blossom tree for my daughter's birthday.....when she opens the curtains in the morning she has a big smile on her face.
I have done a Birthday Week for years when I was married. Complete with a piccolo of champagne the eve of the week....then a bottle every night with a gift...then a few bottles on his birthday with a big dinner and more gifts..yup...8 days of birthday celebration...took a lot of thought and planning.
For the kids I don't always have the money, time or patience to do a big thing...since two of them have birthdays the last week of December an it is a busy time for so many people. I do a small affair...but still very festive...not Xmassy... and lots of cake and fav dishes... balloons... the whole shabang!
My kids threw me a Happy Divorsary celebration two years ago....it was so weird! Cards...and a song... and big smiles all around. They were really happy about the 1st year of us ALL being divorced....lol
I never celebrate my birthday.

| Special Occasions Posted: 5/4/2009 10:00:37 PM | I spend so much time celebrating stranger's special events for my job that i never get to celebrate my own.
Even milestone birthdays come and go without much more hoopla that having dinner with my immediate family... and even that gets overblown somehow.
Having someone to celebrate things with might make it more special but
Yeah... whatever...

talldarkand..... (Yes, you are handsome) I still remember in Feb 2006 when I went to my first event at 8 Seconds and you came up to me in your dark suit and black cowboy hat. You looked in my eyes and gave me some chocolate hearts.... Belittling yourself will never make you attractive to a woman ... Jmho.....

| Special Occasions Posted: 5/5/2009 3:03:11 AM | ^^^I suspect with talldarkandhuh's line of work placing him amidst much public exposure, he likely has no difficulty finding anyone to date but probably has a fan club of sorts ... & his profile says he doesn't date.
Special occasions ... I spoil my kids & those I love on special occasions, but personally, I really have no need for anything materialistic & would rather have my loved one/s spend time with me. A card with sweet words of sentiment or even a lame attempt to write a poem goes a long way; a simple bunch of flowers or dinner out is fine too. Most know that if they must give me something, gift cards for local restaurants or the mall are best.

| Special Occasions Posted: 5/5/2009 10:53:58 PM | I love to celebrate special occassions, I love to cook for those I love (although it really ain't much fun cooking for a vegetarian, let me tell you!). Evevryone in my family gets a goodie basket at Christmas, home-made jams, jellies, pickles, cookies, hand-made chocolates. Great fun, without a lot of expense. | |

| Special Occasions Posted: 5/6/2009 2:15:05 AM | For others, I'll do the hooplah. I'll buy them those insanely huge balloons from Safeway and bestow them with it on their day. I'll go all out and get the ice cream cake. I'll wrack my brains for a unique gift and not give them a pen or a mug (unless they truly collect them for reasons beyond me).
Silly? No. Waste of money? No If it makes me happy to do it and if they accept it (their gift to me) then all's good.
For me, I dislike hooplah on my bday or mom's day. Hooplah for me on mom's day is to take us out to White Spot so I don't have to cook breakfast !

| Special Occasions Posted: 7/11/2009 1:01:38 PM | For my birthdays I do the "un-birthday" thing...Yes I've been known to celebrate it backwards. In other words I start by taking inventory of my life and the past year. As an act of gratitude and joy I GIVE cards and presents to those around me who have made my life beautiful and worthwhile, thanking them. And for those who are closest I love to prepare a special dinner for us to share. Whenever I have done this it has made my b'day extra special. Not too long now, August is around the corner.... I'll be keeping an eye on my mailbox for the parcel. I'm guessing you'll send massage oil and scented candles with a big hint. | |
