The windows7 release candidate is now available for the general public today to download and try. I've been a tester for the beta version for many months and i love this os.
So, will you be downloading windows7 in the near future or are you going to give it a miss?

P.S you get a whole twelve months to play around with it without having to pay anything

Just an important FYI, it seems if you are still running the release candidate on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to re-install the programs and data that you want to use.

Yes, we are currently have it in our dev lab at work. So far, this version is vastly superior to Vista. My company is a member of Microsoft's JDP. We get all their software in the various beta phases. I dig the XP mode so far. However, I think this is gonna to lead to software/hardware compatibility nightmares. We'll see.

I've enjoyed Windows 7 beta, just burned the install image to a dvd and planning to wipe my old xp drive to make room for the final version (after all xp will need a lot of updates in 1 years time if I haven't bought a retail copy of 7). I didn't care for vista, a lot of the development tools I used had some serious flaws with vista, but all except for one of them seem to work just fine in windows 7. With the changes they did during the last couple weeks of beta I noticed the cpu and memory usage calmed down big time, while it wasn't a problem considering this system is well over the requirements, it sure is nice to have it running more efficiently. However I still don't have equalizer support on my x-fi extreme pci card or my headset which has a built in x-fi, that's a real bummer considering I watch a lot of online video while programming and the quality of online video practically requires an equalizer to keep my subwoofer from exploding.

I have been using it now since the first Beta and I like it, but it's not a must buy if you are running Vista or even XP for that matter.

It's a bit faster and more stable then Vista. The taskbar is mainly the biggest visual change over Vista, but other then that it's pretty much the same look as Vista. The Navigation on some things are easier to get to then in Vista, but other then that it's still generally the same navigational wise as Vista.

Not ideal for Netbooks or old pc's. Anyone running lower-end Netbook or a pc more then 4 years old should stay with XP.

Windows 7 is an intermediate update to the Windows OS. Nothing revolutionary to it, just more improved over the previous generation.

I like it. My only complaints have to do with the elaborate permissions structure, which can block the system's root account from deleting files (very frustrating.) It also blocks anti-virus products from removing infected files that use this fact to their advantage.

They've resolved the gazillion processes running in the background issue of Vista, though that may be because the functions they performed are now integrated into the kernel. I like the new features they added to the start menu/task bar. Haven't tested out the WinXP emulated mode yet.

Good hardware detection in my case - everything worked out of the box. If only it were that easy with Linux :p

What hardware are you using?

I've installed a variety of distros successfully on a pretty wide range of hardware(including home made PCs) and even runs on Mac PPCs. I've found that Ubuntu & Xubuntu will work on almost anything, I'm curious to know what it doesn't work on.

I ran the 32-bit beta from January, and now run the 64-bit RC. My backup PC is below minimum standard (low grade on-board video and only 1.5GB of PC3200 RAM), but it's running just fine. I installed as much of my old software as possible (some required Vista compatibility mode, as they could not figure out what OS I was using), and I've only run into very minor glitches - most of which are the software' issue (when 3 programs can open mpgs with no sweat but the 4th can't, that's not Win7's fault). Only security/permissions issue I've encountered is my Atomic Clock program isn't allowed to update the system clock... yet. I'll work on that when I have time.

i threw it on my laptop and it was pretty cool, i'm contemplating putting it on my desktop but xp works just fine for what i use it for, and this would be more for just fun. also, i've read on numerous sites that activesync and pda's seems to be sketchy at best, and i flash custom roms on my phone all the time and don't want to risk having it brick my phone.

For s***s and giggles I finally decided to download this "final beta" to play around with. It looks like Vista but runs like XP. I'm running it on really generic laptop, Everex brand, with full VIA chipset, so it's already got an odd hardware config to start with. I was pleasantly surprised when 7 fully installed everything right off the bat without requiring drivers. A single driver update later it was fully current.

Now for the "hater" part...... As a guy who uses a Mac for a primary machine... I'm seeing things here that OSX had at least 2 releases ago..... such as the translucent taskbar (our dock is see through). I also noticed that the new Windows Explorer is almost a direct Finder ripoff. The one thing I like about Windows over OSX was the quick keyboard navigation of Windows Explorer. Now, there is no sidebar with drives, just the standard OSX type drives, favorites, shared, etc.

Would I use this for a primary OS upon final release? No. I will still stay with OSX. But I will give MS some props for finally putting out something that actually works (so far..).

P.S. As a sidenote of sorts, I've been a Windows user since day one, Windows 3.11. I have a long history as a tech, and made the switch to OSX last year and haven't looked back.

Oh Man, you guys make it sound so good :)

If RC1 still has the beta fish background (like beta did), I might have to get it and quad boot or make a rc1 vmdk, maybe i'll use bing with it as my home page in IE.

I've just installed it as Virtual Machine thus far. Similar layout to vista in regards to control panel, start button, looks. Microsoft must think people are getting blinder or something, just the default layout seems bigger and more old people friendly, specially the taskbar. Overall its worth an upgrade from vista provided your system currently runs vista smoothly.

Installed office 2010 technical preview. Pretty much all the apps are the same as 2007 with new splash screens the pearl menu has changed. Outlook got the biggest change, it now follows suit with the other 2007/2010 apps and changed to the tabbed menu system. Overall not to bad at all.

The Best of PC World
Call it Microsoft's week of surprises. First, it unleashed Bing--an impressive-looking replacement for Live Search--at the AllThingsD conference. Then on Monday, it stunned us with Project Natal, a paradigm-shifting game controller that Game-On blogger Matt Peckham describes as "Nintendo's Wii without the gangly Wii-remote." But those moves pale in comparison with the announcement on Tuesday that Windows 7 will be available in stores on October 22, months earlier than Microsoft's initial target. Why is that so remarkable? Because Microsoft operating systems are never, never, never early. I've been covering Redmond OS launches since the early 90s, and I've come to depend on the reliability of Microsoft's unreliability when it comes to setting release dates. And now this. I'm tempted to say, "I'll believe it when I see it." But the Win 7 Release Candidate currently available online seems rock solid, and I see no reason why this new date should slip. So while you wait, check out JR Raphael countdown story, "Windows 7 Release: What Happens Between Now and October 22."

Running windows 7 via fusion on my mac (2.4ghz 4g RAM), looking very promising.

Key to virtualizing windows 7 via fusion is to use windows 2008 server, instead of what fusion recommends (Vista).

I've loaded the RC on 3 machines so far, and have been playing around with 7 since the leaked pre-beta releases. I've been *very* impressed with the performance so far, as well as the stability of a non production-release OS (from Microsoft, of all companies).

Test Subjects:
Machine #1: Desktop PC
Athlon 64 3400+
1GB RAM
160GB SATA HD
ATi Radeon Xpress 200 graphics (RS482 chipset)

Machine #2: Dell Latitude D620 notebook
Core Duo T2300
1GB RAM
60GB HD
nVidia Quadro NVS110M Graphics
Intel 945 chipset

Machine #3: Acer AspireOne AOA150, 8.9" LCD
Intel Atom N270 CPU
1GB RAM
120GB 1.8" HD
Intel 945GM chipset

Results are as follows:
Machine #1: no drivers available for chipset/graphics. They are not included with the OS, and Vista drivers did not work. ATi has discontinued driver development for this chipset. Was not able to test further.
Machine #2: A RAM bump might be beneficial, but it runs admirably on 1GB. It is still loaded.
Machine #3: It came preloaded with Windows XP Home. 7 feels faster, and boots twice as quickly as XP.
