Why does everyone have their panties in a bunch over swine flu? If you read the FAQ on the CDC website, they list all the same symptoms and precautions that you would see for regular flu. Also, if you read all the media reports, the symptoms are the same as regular flu too. I've confirmed this with friends who work in medicine (doctors, nurses, medical research). They all say it is no different than regular flu in terms of symptoms, severity, length of infection, and contagiousness, and you should just take the same precautions you would normally take to avoid regular flu. So you can't catch it by eating or handling pork. I also heard the Dr. Dean Edel radio show last weekend, and he went through a 15 minute diatribe criticizing the government and media for instilling widespread panic over this matter. Dr. Edel pointed out that in the United States, about 800 people die from the regular flu every week during the flu season, and nobody is calling it a pandemic! And bottom line: I wrote an email to the CDC to either tell me what makes swine flu worse or different than regular flu, or add a statement in their FAQ page saying clearly that it is no different. They have done neither. But why would they care what a little peon like me thinks? lol.

I think the reason is because even the experts do not know enough about it yet. While it appears to have the same symptoms as seasonal flu, it is mutating as it goes along. On a good note, it seems to be mutating weaker and not stronger. A huge concern is and some experts are making the presumption that if it makes a return during regular flu season, it will re-appear stronger than it is now.

As far as eating pork, that is a bogus fear that is being created, I agree. This swine flu is an airborne disease for starters and if people are not properly cooking their meat, they should be more concerned about botulism, E. coli, and other food poisoning illnesses than about contracting Swine flu!!

OK, but regular flu virus also mutates. In fact if you harbor two different strains of flu virus and have the antibodies for both strains, you can still get reinfected if those two strains combine to form a new one, like lego blocks. That is my understanding of the resilience of the flu bug from casual googling. I just want the govt. to come clean with some straight talk. I want to know if the swine flu kills a higher percentage of its victims. And anything else that sets it apart from seasonal flu, besides the fact that it contains the word "swine"!

I don't think it kills more people ...they probably just don't have a vaccine for the strain of this flu...if it should mutate and become stronger then they fear it will become disasterous. Fear does strange things to some people. At first I thought it was sweeps week for tv or a diversion to take our minds off the economy.

but a vaccine can be developed. It just takes time. Just like it does for a regular flu virus. And Beth, you're right, not everyone has their panties in a bunch. I don't, and neither do any of the people I know in real life who work in the medical field. I don't wear panties anyway. However, the government and the media seem to. And so do the public schools. There is one local elementary school in the nearby community of Cornelius that is shutting down until the end of the week. There are several other local schools that are closing for a day or two, and some that have cancelled all extracurricular activities for the week.

I agree it's a media/government developed panic. I feel if a person takes proper precautions, then their chances of contracting it are slim.

There are currently, as of 7am news this morning, only 169 confirmed cases in all of Canada, and only one serious case. A little girl in Alberta that is starting on the road to recovery.

I will not get a (regular) flu shot, because from what I have heard, they (the people giving the shots) can't even tell you what is in them. And, everyone, that I personally know, that have got the shot in the past, has come down with the worst case of the flu they ever had, within a week of getting the shot.

N1H1 (previously called the swine flu) has much the same symptoms as the "regular" flu. The danger lies in it because of the mutations and the availability of the vaccine. Any flu can be deadly in the young, elderly, pregnant, unhealthy persons. In an attempt to contain the virus pandemonium has occurred. If the public would heed the warnings that have been publicized for years the media and infectious control centers wouldn't have to work so hard to warn others. Any time you get the flu, quarantine yourself, wear a mask and commit to proper handwashing. Always remember that hospitals have sick people and germs. If it's not necessary to be there don't. No one listens until the government gets involved.

This swine flu which is recognized as something else now as one poster put is just a different strain of the flu virus. The flu shots we get during flu season constantly need to be enhanced each year in order to protect us. The CDC said they were going to manufacture a vaccine but it might take 4 to 6 months for it to be available in large enough quantities, just what I've heard lately.
On a side note...I love how the world rages over the rapid spread of this virus(granted, I don't want it to spread anymore either) and are trying so hard to prevent it from spreading by handing out masks for people to wear yet HIV is spreading like wildfire too andsome people still don't use condoms.

Fear-mongers and sensationalism.

The goal of any disease, of any parasitic organism, is to co-exist with its host so it can continue to thrive. If it killed everyone it landed on, it'd die out real fast. And diseases don't like to die out. They like to mutate into something harmless so they go on grooving in runny noses and scratchy throats.

But I wonder whose fault it is, the sensationalist media or the people who listen to them? Most level-headed individuals I know have treated the 'pandemic' with just as much sarcasm and disdain.

It's a BigPharma fear-mongering scam to stampede people into getting shots (of untested vaccine), and organizations into forcing, or nearly forcing, people to get the shots. Very much like the Gardisil/HPV scam.

Any time there's this much noise about anything, follow the money.

1000s of US people, mostly very young and very old, the usual victims, die every year from flu and colds. This winter won't be much different. For perspective, nearly 90,000 die yearly from avoidable/preventable medical errors.

the swine flu is the bird flu as well from what i remember. i remember hearing the h1n1 is a combo of the swin flu, bird flu, and another type. That's why here anyway there was a big sweep to start calling it h1n1 in the news, so people wouldnt do dumb stuff. like the egyptian pres calling for the slaughter of so many pigs.

If one looks at the financial relationships between media and other large business organizations, it is not hard to decern that they feed off each other.

Sewing fear in the general population makes it that much easier for them to control the message(s) that garner profits.

As said before....follow the money

What's next? Beef flu? Na....beef packing industry is way to powerful for that...

Our university is in a big tiff about the swine flu and I'm like "but this is a university, why is every university rep and professor still calling it swine flu?" then i realized H1N1 has wayyyy too many syllables compared to one dipthong, it's an oral workout and no one likes working out. The problem with this particular swine flu is that it's affecting kids and teens, not the elderly. You'd think old people would get it since their immune system is crappier but that's not the case, it's affecting people that have good immune systems. Regular flu affects the elderly, swine flu doesn't. See a problem here?

The media and government may be retarded about overestimating the threat of swine flu, and even if it's "harmless" in the long run, you gotta realize that people may be stupid but they can also be extremely powerful at the same time. If you don't to incur the wrath of a powerful entity, you better get friendly with the retards.

Eat fermented kimchi it will help fight the flu. It is believed kimchi was good for SARS too.
It works differently than a vaccine. Fermented foods helps by strengthening the immune system.

I only had the flu once in my life, only once I forgot to eat kimchi. I rarely caught the cold too, I only caught when I wasn't eating any fermented foods.

IMO, the stir about H1N1 is because so many people have no immunity to it. During a full blown pandemic, the economic fallout could be disasterous. Most of our service-type workforce is made up of under 40's, the most vulnerable to this type of flu.

Imagine what would happen if half the people in the workforce under 40 stayed home because of the flu? Plus, those people with young children who were ill would have no place to leave the children, schools and daycares would be closed, consequently, they would also stay home from work. There would be full scale pandemonium.

Last spring, our school district closed for 4 days because of it. You should have heard all the whining and moaning. I don't even want to consider what it will be like if the virus spreads as anticipated.

"4) Vaccine manufacturers have been insulated from liability by the government.

The Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius has granted legal immunity not only to the makers of the 2 drugs being used to treat swine flu, Tamiflu and Relenza, but also to the swine flu vaccine makers, for damages due to their use against swine flu. By effectively manipulating the legal system, the Pharmaceutical Industry through their powerful lobbyists have acquired almost complete and total insulation from any liability for their vaccines and adjuvants, which are additives added to generate a stronger immune response. It is believed that it is these adjuvants which often cause the problems. The last time the government embarked on a major vaccine campaign against a new swine flu was in 1976. Thousands filed claims for side effects such as paralysis caused by the vaccine and a number of people died."

Yeah Monalee- run from the shot! Hey did y'all hear about the lawsuit filed against the fda for SF vaccine? Its Null et al v FDA et al filed in DC district court on Fri as an emergency injuntion to halt cumpulsory vaccination of an inadequately tested vaccine. We're not the only ones squawking about this
