| Couch to 5K Posted: 5/7/2009 2:09:10 AM | | I was just wondering if anyone know anything about this program at all? I'm looking for a way to get some more physical activity in life, and was thinking about taking up running as it seems like a pretty cheap way to get more active. I do walk every day, but want to step things up a notch and am thinking about doing a 5K in late summer/early fall, but I know there's no way I can run it now. And to be honest I have a couple lbs that I wouldn't mind losing. | |

| Couch to 5K Posted: 5/7/2009 4:02:25 AM | This program has been around for quite a while. It is a good program for the beginning runner. I haven't used it, but instead I joined up with my local Running Room store. They have all kinds of regular learn to run clinics, and group runs 2 or more times a week, that are free.
If you've got a Running Room store in your location, check it out. I believe you can sign up on line for their clinics actually. | |

| Couch to 5K Posted: 5/7/2009 5:22:06 AM | There is a Running Room in Winnipeg that you can join (running clinics are about $70 Cdn) which gives you the added bonus of running with a group and learn a thing or two about proper running. I started to run a year ago with the Learn To Run clinic and I'm about to do my second half-marathon. I never, in a million years, imagine I'd be at this point now.
As for running being a pretty cheap sport, not anymore although there will be people who will disagree with me and say they run in anything and they feel great. Fine for them, I know I can't run in track pants nor cotton top and cheap socks.
First, get fitted for shoes. Proper shoes WILL make a difference, trust me. Then socks, shorts, a GOOD bra (gotta keep the girls tight) and a technical shirt. No cotton, you'll die of heat. If you invest in one thing, invest in the shoes.
The Running Room also has practice nights on Wednesdays at 6 and Sunday mornings at 8:30. You'll be amazed how many people join these nights. These practice runs are free. Check the running room website.
Running alone won't make you lose the weight either. Combined with a balanced diet and cross training, you'll see the pounds shed but not by running alone. Oh and easy does it at the beginning but do run 3 times a week.
Good luck! | |
