| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 3:01:33 PM | Iam so surprised at how many people can't or don't read! I have hosted a few events in the past, and have been sending out mass mail event invites.
I had received several really mean, nasty and even threatening replies! And, here is the funny part, only THAT person can control if they get email for events. It is at the bottom of the page under the topic "Mail Settings".
any ideas?

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 3:10:15 PM | | How about saying straight away in your invitations that the recipient is getting the note because they have the event notification option activated in their profile. | |

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 3:32:28 PM | What the hell is wrong with people?
Seriously, it's a free site and for me it's fun,
The email for events are welcomed and anyone that has a hissy fit about emails to annouce them is probably upset about the only emails they get are for events.
Don't worry about it. | |

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 3:36:59 PM | Same reason that people push on a door marked "Pull" or try to enter via the "Exit".
I understand the rant. Far too many people choose to respond with anger instead of reading the whole message. There are lots that consider it a personal invitation too.
Could be one of the reasons why I rarely host events anymore. Once upon a time ... I didn't mind the abuse. LOL.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 4:10:38 PM | ignore the dolts! .. plain and simple geezuz there's no accounting for some peoples kids is there..
from the glass half empty/half full file ... just think they've helped you weed out another bonehead you wont be wasting time dating or even thinking about dating (and if they're that ignorant over a notification -- just be thankful ... can you imagine what they would be like to have to spend time with? keerist what would they do if it was something really important? )

MY emails DO say, this is a mass email and TWICE it says, "if you do not want to receive mass emails, only YOU can change that on your mail settings'
but that hardly gives anyone permission to email me and threaten to 'tie me up and rape me" omg...
Thank goodness POF and BigFish responded quickly... and for now, that YOUNG man has no profile....
And thanks to the rest of you, for reading and understanding... helps when you feel burnt.
But it does makes one NOT want to host events... We don't get paid, we do it for fun and to meet folks.
Just keep that in mind people... thanks for letting me rant..
grrrr, (looking over shoulder)

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 5:29:26 PM | OP.
So sorry you have to endure with that kind of immature and inappropriate crap.
You might preface any mass email that the message is not a personal contact but is a mass email, a POF function for event hosts, and that you as a host have no control over who it is sent to, the mailing list is determined by users' location and distance from your venue.
However as you have experienced, some people just won't read it, or fail to comprehend, or are just too consumed with other thoughts to recognize your intent.
Be glad those people don't attend your events (and hope they don't procreate).
I'm sure those that attend your events will support you well.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 6:15:46 PM | HnP that is awful! I think you did the right thing letting POF and BigFish look after it.
I've only co-hosted one event and had no problems there, but I have received a couple of really rude emails from dimwits on POF that I had never met. Have also received similar threatening msgs to the one you mentioned, for no apparent reason. Pretty sick people out there, but mostly there are a lot of good people.
You have to know your efforts are appreciated by the majority, don't let the minority get to you.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/15/2009 7:25:18 PM | Hmmmmmmmmmmm . . . interesting. I don't agree with that kind of behavior nor do I support it in way, but in a way maybe it is a sign of the times. Maybe, they are saying leave me alone and let be whatever on my own little island. Perhaps, some fish find the invites intrusive.
Yes, ignore it. | |

I voted on the poll btw: Give up hope for literacy in BC

Posted: 5/15/2009 10:51:46 PM | And, here is the funny part, only THAT person can control if they get email for events. - HamNPineapple That's how it is supposed to work. But I got an event email a week or 2 ago & I'm going "Hmm, I thought I turned that off a year or so ago. WTF?" So, I check my email settings & it IS turned off! I also noticed that even though I do have my emil notification turned ON, it hasn't worked in well over a year. Since I am here numerous times a day, I haven't bothered complaining because it's trivial & I really don't care. Weird, though.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/16/2009 7:27:46 AM | Michaelann, I am not entirely sure but I do think when a mass email is sent out it also goes to people who have attended your events in the past. Therefore, if you signed up for an event then you along with other event attendees to the host's events will also receive the email.
It might not make you feel better about it but it would explain why you received it. JMHO.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/16/2009 8:07:39 AM | ^^^^ You raise a good point.
I recall the one mass email I sent from my previous user profile, the message was sent to ALL users within 10 km (I think that was the stated range) of the postal code of the venue of the event, plus all users who signed up to that host's previous events (not applicable in my case - first event).
My message was sent to 500+ users over quite a range however, extending from Vancouver Island to the Sechelt Peninsula and I think even a few in North Vancouver. I did ask in the Events Hosts Forums section why it went so much further, thought never did see any response. Perhaps the range is expanded if the event is set for areas with few users until a specified threshold (500?) is reached.
Moreover, the mass email was sent to hidden profiles within that range too. I wonder if that is what ticks some people off. They've hidden their profiles and never posted, so believe they lurk in obscurity, and then they get invited to an event.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/16/2009 11:35:36 AM | Funny how some people are filled with such a seething nastiness, and seem to just wait for the most unlikely times to unleash it on someone.....anyone.....anything. Makes me think they are likely ill on so many levels.
I have had interactions like that on here in the past, where people (men) you might have been having relatively normal correspondence with suddenly "turn" like a Rottweiler with rabies......and become rude and abusive. It's scary to think things might have progressed to the point of actually meeting them, if they had managed to con or charm their way past my intuitive defences. That's why if a profile stresses personal meets right off the hop, I'd head for the hills.
Welcome to the internet. Sometimes I fear for the more innocent among us in this venue.

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/16/2009 12:59:12 PM | Hahahahaha,
I just sent them a note explaining how to change their settings and mark it up to "people don't/can't read".
I get hate mail from both male and female members and wish them the best of luck in their search as I know they will find the person they think they deserve.
Taking the abuse pesonally is not an option for me.
I feel that it is THEIR problem, not mine.
It seems to be a problem of people failing to read and get information from said reading.
JMHO

| Hate mail !!! Don't people read anymore? Posted: 5/16/2009 8:15:16 PM | YUP... the hate mael is the biggest prob when hosting an event... and it is normally, in the case for the event mails that I have sent out for events, mostly from 20 something males who accuse me of being gay for sending THEM an e-mail when it it not really me... it is the POF "machine" that selects the list and sends out.
I've also had people click on the REPORT PHOTO FOR NOT BEING A CURRENT HEADSHOT link under my photo and my ine of me holding the WELCOME TO THE POND photo was dleted and I got an Automated e-mail from BigFish stating the pic was removed because it was reported as not showing my face... but it did so...
People just like to complain... and, as chosen in the survey I tend to laugh it off

I didn't know that. But I don't think this was the case. I have only been to a couple of POF events, & I don't believe they were hosted by her (although it was SO long ago, I can't really be sure). Thank you for the possible insight, though.
