Why is 45 such a pivotal age? I still feel young, and I think I look fairly young, too. I seldom have aches and pains, and can still climb stairs and ride a bike, and even curse occasionally. What is it about that number! I am not a senior! What age does one officially become a senior? When you qualify for Social Security? Help!

I dislike lables. Just call me Princess.

I may be a senior when I am 100, but not before that.

I think I starting getting AARP crap at about 55.

It all went straight to the waste can. They finally got the clue and stopped the junk mail.

No one ask but .... to me AARP is nothing but a sham. All they seem to do is sell their endorsement (allow the use of the name for money) to rip off insurance companies.

You've been misinformed -- 45 is the new 25 -- now go bag yourself a young stud!

Seriously, some people tend to think age is meaningless or that it means everything. I can tell you that there are some things better left to the younger guys and there are some things that make no difference what age you are at.

It's your choice to decide if you want to fit into that box or not.

Well, I'm in the same boat.

I feel as young as ever, still like to get out and play sports -- especially with my young son and his friends. But I received my first AARP solicitation a couple weeks back. What's up with that??

Hmmmm...I thought AARP didn't start sending people stuff until they were 50.

OP: you are young!! And gorgeous... I keep thinking how the hell did I get to be 57? You've got 12 years on me and I have no aches and pains and can still ride a bike, go hiking, and do pretty much whatever I have always done. Nothing has really changed except that number. So whoever is trying to make you feel old, ignore them...whoever or whatever they are/it is....Oh and because of the building I work in, I climb many, many stairs every day....

Forty five is not old to me but then age is in your mind.
There may be a cut off in the 45 age bracket because a lot of people have completed the child rearing years. Generally, empty nesters may be considered as older and are thus ,seniors.
I have noticed that senior coffees and cokes and even senior menu food all tastes the same as the "regular" stuff and it's cheaper.

Relax, OP, you have almost half of your adult years remaining before you hit 67 and qualify for full Social Security although you will qualify for Medicare at age 65, if they are still around when you attain those ages. At 50 you can join AARP and get a discount card along with all their insurance and other offers. Joining AAA right now will give you similar discounts although not the senior prices at restaurants or a Golden Eagle pass to the National Parks in the USA. By the way, somebody behind the AARP scenes is making billions off their mailing list, fer shure!

From what I read 43 is the magical age at which women's hormonal balance starts to significantly shift from what it is during their younger, more fertile years. In your fifties you may experience some hair loss on your scalp and sprout a pretty nice moustache. Keep a stiff upper lip and carry on!

I was a senior at one time.
Back in 1969.
When I graduated High School.
Boy that felt good!

These days?
If someone wants to call me a senior.. what the heck, I don't care.
Especially if it's the department store downtown that gives a 20% discount.

Remember, to all little kids... if you're over 30, you're ancient!

To my 91 year old mother.. I'm a babe.

Why is 45 such a pivotal age?
If it is a pivotal age to you, it's your choice to think that.
It wasn't a pivotal age number for me.

When you feel it......

There are times when I roll out of bed in the morning that I feel each and every ache and pain from all the years of being athletic, banging my body, and thinking that I was never going to suffer what others have as they aged.

I creak and crack, and seem to have a hard time not standing at an angle for some minutes in the morning, but alas, as I move and get into my stride, I am physically what I believe I am mentally........until I have to do it all over again the next morning.

We can not stop the total of all the wrinkles that happen, or the graying of the hair, the metabolism slowing down, and all the other things that come with aging, but we can continue to be the best we can be, and not let it happen easily.

I can still do many of the things with my 20 year old son, beat him at some, and take a beating at others, but what I have noticed, is that when doing all that I do, not to many, if any, think of me as a "senior", unless they see themselves that way much before they knew me.

Just my opinion.......

I am not a senior!

Well I am and I like it. I like it even better when I do business with businesses in the States because 55 is their cut-off to be a senior. In Canada, I have to wait until I'm 65.

I cruise and all the cruise lines are based in the States and on cruises the senior rates kick in at 55 years of age. The last couple of cruises I took saved me a whole schwack of money just because I had reached that golden age of 55. When it comes to saving money, you can call me a senior any ol' time you want.

Me too, Ms. Tink. And it doesn't bother me a bit. I can get kids to do things for me 'cause I'm old, eh ? And people don't expect me to do much, and when I do, it's a big surprise. And when I attend Native Pow-wows in the summer, I can sit with the 'elders' and pow a few wows with them.

I love it. Wouldn't trade any of it ... 'cept maybe the first thing in the morning thing, but ya can't have it all.

I got my first AARP crap last week, and I'm 49. I started coloring my gray hair again because everyone at the stores would ask me if I got a senior discount. Since the hair color, no one has asked. Thank God, lol.

I felt some changes in my thinking and energy level around age 46...kind of a "psychic shift" but the feeling was one of opening up and growing. I felt like that I could think more deeply about life because I had more experiences to look back on, but also felt a new energy for learning. I guess we go through a shift to elder-hood, which comes much later, and if people think I have some wisdom to offer to the younger ones, that will be a plus.

Geez, I'd like to be 45 again...It was an awesome age. The aches and pains started more into my 50s, and then my husband became ill. Now it's ten years later, and my husband has passed, and here I am trying to figure out what I want to do when I finish growing up.

About the AARP letters. He was 4 years older; we both started getting AARP invites right before our 50th birthdays. The saying around here when somebody gets the first one is "You've been aarped!" :) So he lived long enough, we could both say that to each other, though neither of us joined. But I think they send those out around age 50 because the organization focuses on retired people.

In our town senior discounts start at age 55, and I'm happy to take one. What salespeople usually ask is "are you eligible for any discounts?" That way, people who don't want to use a senior discount for whatever reason don't have to. The age for senior housing/retirement housing has gone up though. My sis started looking at the 55+ places only to find that the youngest residents must now be 62.

Personally I like the word "elder" as a term of respect given by the family and community. The word "elderLY" however, is offensive. It's like saying, "Well this peron is old, but we don't want to come out and say it."

If we're lucky to have our health and be loved by others then we are lucky to be seniors and elders eventually. But I agree, that "senior" doesn't start at 45! I'd say 55 if you want to go by when the discounts start, but I don't feel like a "senior citizen" and I've just passed that birthday. I guess I'll claim the term at 62 or so.

Geez I sure liked being 45, justbunky, and I'm glad you are enjoying it too. There is so much to think about and it's a transitional time...but 45 has some energy that 55 doesn't.

Blessings to all on this journey.

You may be a senior when people start addressing you as "sir" or "ma'am" unless you are in the South.

Frankly, I still enjoy being carded when I request a senior ticket at the movies. I even don't mind when I am entering a National Park and they ask for a driver's license when I show them my Golden Eagle pass.

I won't consider myself a senior until I'm 70 or so...I'm very active and view myself as being in the prime of life. Usually no one can guess my age, probably because I don't dwell on it. Men, however, have a much narrower viewpoint; most of the men I know in my age group want to date women in their 30's and a lot of men on POF limit their search to that age group. They don't know what they're missin'

I don't like the term 'cougar' because it seems to be predatory, and I don't feel predatory when I date. I pretty much go out with anyone who I'm attracted to, no matter what their age; I just enjoy the moment!

I'm sixty eight, and I'm an old lady. I'm not a bleedin' "senior" nor a senorita, either. . . .

I wouldn't mind being an elder, but I figure that'll take a few more years to earn.

BTW, I never was a junior, either.

Depends ... (haha) ... on where you live?

Here in Florida we have what are called "55 and over" communities, I think they were marketed as "senior lifestyle" but Florida law has changed and even though they are still allowed to remain 55 and over, they can no longer be marketed or advertised as such. Would I want to live in one? H*** no! Cannot believe I'm old enough now for one of those places.

I think the movies used to be age 55 for senior discount, but the other day it was 68 I think, and the price wasn't lower than a regular adult ticket. A sign of the times I suppose.

I have aches and pains at times, but I had aches and pains at times when I was in my 30's too... I'm also at that age of going through menopause and yikes, maybe I AM a senior?
