| | High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies?Page 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | Hello All,
This is my first post in this section. I was at my Dr's yesterday and had had some blood work done last month. Turns out my triglycerides are literally off the chart! They can't figure out the ratio of good cholesterol to bad because of this! I am 3 points over the high end of scale!
I am now at 31 on Lipid lowering medications. I am being referred to another specialist about this. Family history etc. I have always had higher cholesterol, but this test scares the bejeezus out of me. I guess it has something to do with my liver over producing them or something, as opposed to diet and lifestyle. I am average build, maybe 10lbs over the ideal for my height (so not obese). I have a relatively healthy diet, I eat egg whites over whole eggs etc. So diet suggestions are not what I am looking for, I have seen a nutritionist years ago over this, and found my Triglycerides jumped 1.5 points when on a special diet.
I am looking to see if there are any other suggested natural remedy's to help lower this in conjunction with the med I am now on! I need to get this under control, as I don't really want to be on a lifelong medication at my age.
Thanks for your help! | |

|
| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/20/2009 3:01:43 PM | It has been an ongoing thing over years and have monitored it! This test I had fasted for 13 hours when blood was drawn, so it that sense it is accurate. Discovered originally as a child when my dad developed heart problems, and have always known I tended to run on the high end of scale I watched my diet and intake to avoid increasing it. Was just a little spooked, still am! I started the Lipidil yesterday. I know some say that cayenne or other herbal "supplements" can be used in conjunction to lower levels and this is the advice I was seeking.
Thanks! | |

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/20/2009 4:18:18 PM | High triglycerides are caused by eating too much sugar, refined grains, white flours, pasta, white rice, etc. You can lower then by changing your diet to whole grains. Eating cholesterol doesn't give you high cholesterol. On the contrary- without enough cholesterol from food sources, the body is forced to produce it. Egg yolks are not the problem. How much sugar (+ sweeteners) and whites do you eat? | |
|
| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/20/2009 5:33:41 PM | "whole grains."
There's more good stuff in them that refined/milled grains, but they are still predominantly carbs.
"without enough cholesterol from food sources, the body is forced to produce it"
Your body produces about 2000 mg of cholesterol/day, no forcing required, and average dietary intake is about 200 mg/day. Dietary cholesterol has not been proven to affect serum cholesterol. Cutting dietary intake of cholesterol to zero has little effect on serum cholesterol.
Sounds like she's got genetic problem managing tryglycerides, which is considered "by some" to be worse than high cholesterol. Low cholesterol and high tryglycerides still means CVD. Many people with avg/low cholesterol still die from heart disease.

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/20/2009 10:26:31 PM | op. if your cholesterol level is over 300, it"s genetic and not a huge deal. my former boss had parents that were on opposite sides of the scale. his mother was slim, watched what she ate and her levels were through the roof. his dad ate fatty food constantly, was overweight and his cholesterol was normal. my boss, cycling fanatic, was over 400. watch out for the cholesterol meds! lipitor can destroy the liver. make sure your blood tests are done frequently. to lower your cholesterol naturally take fish oils and flaxseed oil daily. take 2 capsules of each with a meal. i did this myself and dropped my total cholesterol from 233 to 200 in less than 3 months. no drugs. no special diet. still ate fatty foods and candy but exercised 4 times a week. if you exercise, make it high intensity. get your blood flowing. a half an hour three times a week of weight training or high intensity cardio is enough to lower cholesterol. low intensity will do nothing for your cholesterol levels. to keep the science to a mininum, these oils are prostaglandin precursers. these oils have been proven to not only lower cholesterol levels but actually reverse plaque buildup on the arterial walls. side effects? shiny nails, softer hair and improved brain function. also linked to more supple skin but i haven't read enough about that to offer a guarantee. also try garlic. the allicin in garlic is a proven cholesterol agent. more info available on request. | |

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/20/2009 11:27:05 PM | Our son whose been on insulin since he was a baby, had genetic cholesterol issues and he avoids all white foods, be it bread, rice, pasta, potato, sugar, flour. And he eats whole grains, oatmeal, vegetables. fish.
Consider seeing a registered dietician to see how your food choices are and what changes you could do. Also ask your physician if trying niacin which can help boost your HDL. It is tricky and can cause some people to get flushed.

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/21/2009 10:46:47 AM | Thanks bugsbro! This is what I was looking for. I will look into the flaxseed oil and garlic, I knew about the fish oils.
I know that this is a genetic issue. However right now with a level of 5.28 and the normal high for triglycerides here is 2.8, they have decided to put me on the Lipidil. I will be doing liver function tests often and cholesterol tests to to monitor, as they thik its the liver that is creating the high levels to begin with.
Currently I am in an air cast for a nasty sprain and chipped bone in ankle from softball, but normally I am on 4-5 sports teams at any time so I have a lot of activity in my day to day life. I do eat a lot of veggies and fiber, and have cut down massively on the "white" foods way back in January. So diet alone is not my issue, as I had said previously that I have seen a nutritionist before and following that diet caused my levels to jump up 2 points a few years back.
Thanks for the input everyone, hopefully I can get this under control!

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/21/2009 3:06:00 PM | A lot of the time high Triglycerides are caused by sugars. Regular sugar, processed grains (flour) ,beer , sodas ect. You can probably lower it quickly taking these out of your diet. Pancreas problems can lead to blood sugar swings . Did you also get a complete blood work up done? Bun,/ast /got,basophils ect. if not get a complete work up when you can. Foods cause problems and can cure problems . Don't give up trying. | |

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/21/2009 3:08:16 PM | | Sorry I didn't see Landras reply. Most people asume LDL and Triglycerites are the same. They are not. Sugar is your culprit 99% of the time. | |

......... ^^^ what Landra said And a Total Cholesterol number doesn't really tell you much. You need to know the breakdown between HDL and LDL. For HDL, the higher the better.

Oatmeal works best. and it must be teh cooked one not the instant one. Whole grains Seem to take the numbers down. I am surprised yoru dr did not advise you of this.

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 5/22/2009 12:30:32 AM | If your eating a well balanced diet w/o sugar and foods that are on the low glycemic index then you may want to look at your lifestyle. If you work with computers, sleep with an electric blanket, or are constantly exposed to high doses of electrical transmissions this could be causing you to produce more cholesterol. My stepfather used to work with supercomputers and his body was manufacturing more cholesterol than it could use. EMF's can be very damaging. If you do/are on medication I would not be taking any herbal remedies as some could be contraindicated. Talk to your Dr. or pharmacist to make sure of any side effects. | |

...MonaVie Pulse nutritionally supports your cardiovascular system...
OP save your money, as MonaVie is typical multi level marketing scam. Although it may have some health benefits they are not any better than just eating healthy and exercise regularly.
The only difference is that stuff will cost you tons of $.

... MONAVIE would not have had a car in the INDY 500 that came in 12th if it was a scam... Having a car in the Indy 500 has nothing to do with the product claims and it matters less what place they finished. All it does prove is that they make enough money from the product to field a competitive car in the Indy 500.
..DR. OZ, DR. PERRICONE, OPRAH etc etc. would not endorse a scam... Oprah is taking a good bashing from news week for endorsing bogus products. From Oprahs web site: ...Consumers should be aware that neither Oprah Winfrey nor Dr. Oz are associated with nor do they endorse any açaí berry product, company or online solicitation of such products, including MonaVie juice products. Attorneys for Harpo are pursuing companies that claim such an affiliation.... So FYI she does not endorse this product and maybe you should let the people know that are feeding you this information. http://www.oprah.com/article/health/nutrition/20090105_orig_acai
...Of course it is up to you what you think, most negative people say negative things.. Most people will a vested interest in the product will say what ever they are feed to make a buck.

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 6/10/2009 3:14:51 AM | Start lifting weights and exercise regularly.
Also what does your current nurtitional regime look like? Quality of fats as well as quality of carbohydrates as well as total protein intake affects triglyceride levels dramatically.
What diet was it that made it jump a few points?

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 6/10/2009 10:16:15 PM | This is a health and medical question best left for a doctor to answer and discuss any suggestions with him first before doing it.
after saying that:
here are a few suggestions: 1. fish oil 2. garlic 3. red yeast rice
fish oil: Benefits
The American Heart Association recommends the consumption of 1g of fish oil daily, preferably by eating fish, for patients with coronary heart disease.[13] Note that optimal dosage relates to body weight.
The US National Institutes of Health lists three conditions for which fish oil and other omega-3 sources are most highly recommended: hypertriglyceridemia, secondary cardiovascular disease prevention and high blood pressure. It then lists 27 other conditions for which there is less evidence. It also lists possible safety concerns: "Intake of 3 grams per day or greater of omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of bleeding, although there is little evidence of significant bleeding risk at lower doses. Very large intakes of fish oil/omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke."[14]
Garlic: Garlic is claimed to help prevent heart disease (including atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure) and cancer.[12] Garlic is also alleged to help regulate blood sugar levels.
red yeast rice: Modern medicine
Red yeast rice when produced using the 'Went' strain of Monascus purpureus contains significant quantites of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin which is also known as mevinolin, a naturally-occurring statin. It is sold as an over the counter dietary supplement for controlling cholesterol (See ref.: Medicine Net). There is strong scientific evidence for its effect in lowering blood levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein/LDL ("bad cholesterol"), and triglyceride levels (see below). Because an approved drug is identical to the molecule it is therefore regulated as a drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
remember discuss this with your doctor to make sure it doesnt affect your medicine.
Hope this helps
Sincerely,
Louis J. Bianco | |

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 6/13/2009 1:44:23 PM | Thanks Louis for finally mentioning fishoil.... Ok two reasons TG are out 1=heredity 2=Alcohol (binging or daily drinking)
Some of this has been mentioned :)...Here is my summary
1. 2Tbsp flax seed powder daily (this will also lower breast ca risk) 2. 2 GRAMS fish oil daily. 2.2 Oats, beans, peas, lentils, brown rice (has soluble fibre in it) 3. Other healthy fats occasionally READ Olive oil, avacado etc 4. 8-10 Servings veggies daily. 5. Cut Sat FAt way back (cream, ice cream, butter) 6. NO TRANS FAT/or hydrogenated fat AT ALL. 6. Get off refined cho and increase whole grains.
And for the kicker....see a dietitian who specializes in this stuff. You can get all kinds of non-scientific info on the net...ie don't eat dietary cholesterol at all (not good advice ...you need some). PPS See "Core Balance Diet" go to louise hay radio and you will see the author...I think it is Christine Northrup.
cheers,

| High Cholesterol ? Suggestions? Remedies? Posted: 6/15/2009 9:12:22 AM | Throw garlic into some kind of fruit smoothie. Garlic increases circulation, which keeps artieries from getting clogged pumping blood, which helps purge bad cholesterol through natural means, urine and feces.
Also Omega 3 & 4 fatty acids are good for promoting healthy blood circulation and purging bad cholesterol. I take them in pill form. Liquid is more quickly absorbed.
