Caught it on the news last night that it was determined that an accident last year where a young man died was caused in part if not totally by the fact that he was text messaging when his pick up truck jumped a concrete median and slammed head on to another car in the opposite direction.

WOW......so there you go.

Question.... like the other thread about Banning Smoking in car with young kids inside.....do we now look for laws banning cellphones...phones....texting in an operating vehicle?

Question:
Do you text while you drive?

I never text when driving or any other time.

I have instructed my cell phone service provider to disable text messaging on my account years ago.

Rich Coleman was just featured on the news and said we already have a law to deal with driving while texting:

"driving with undue care and attention".

I think that would also cover the situation of a driver trying to select a CD from the CD holder that straps on to the sun visor. Such tasks gets increasing difficult as we age, for our eyes cannot change focus from near to far as quickly as when we were younger.

WWR, yes I would advocate laws prohibiting using cell phones while driving. If caught, the offender should recieve at least a $1000 fine and have his/her cell phone seized and destroyed on spot.

Lately I've been practicing texting with one hand without looking. Yes...I'm really that lame.
I generally drive with one hand anyway so its not much of a difference. No more distracting than changing songs or radio stations on the stereo.

Un, Beleivable.

I question, where the guys brain was at, in the first place.

Text messaging while driving, good lord.

Those fingers of the hands are suppose to be on the steering wheel, and the brain paying attention to the road ahead.

"Do we now look for laws banning cellphones...phones....texting in an operating vehicle? "

No, we shouldn't have to bring in more laws for banning the operation of cellphones...phones....texting in an operating vehicle.

If people have not got the smarts, to know when, and when not to operate cellphones...phones....texting in an operating vehicle, then hey, let them kill themselves, for their stupidity, like the guy did.

"Question:
Do you text while you drive? "

No I don't, becase, I want to live, and I occasionally, I SAID OCCASIONALLY, I use the cell phone while driving, but for most of the time I don't use it at all, while driving.

I believe studies have shown that even just talking to someone on the phone, hands free or not, causes the problem too. So having some hands free device won't really matter. Hell I think it was even on Mythbusters. So when you're driving... No phoning.

I saw a kid texting on his phone while he was riding his bike. Well I guess he was so occupied that he didn't see the light had JUST turned red, and yet he continued on his merry way. I wish you could kill the stupid (and get away with it) sometimes.

I had my texting de-activated years ago when I signed up on my contact. At work, I type all day and find cell texting highly aggravating. Sorry, but I want to hear your voice and its different tonal inflections when using my cell phone, but that is just me.
As for texting and driving, my God, texting while moving in general can be dangerous. Example, the number of people texting while walking and who have smashed into hard, immovable objects (power poles/light stands, garbage receptacles, buildings) and wound up in hospital.
As for hands free devices, the cost of a Bluetooth device has come down considerably. I have one and love it. Safe and easy to use with the touch of one button. If using it, I tend to answer and end the call as quickly as possible as (believe it or not) I am not one to yack incessantly on the phone.

No, I do no text when driving. I do not even talk on my phone. Counter Attack is just as concerned these days with drivers who drive while distracted as they are with drivers who drive drunk. Interestingly enough, there is some research out of North Carolina that shows that distracted drivers drive like drunk drivers.

I heard or read this somewhere as well and I call BS!!
Do people not talk to each other in the cars all the time already. We drive and change stations, discs, tapes whatever!
There are more statistics these days then there are people!!

But I do agree that texting is taking it a bit too far.

Jim Morrison said it best....

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD AND YOUR HAND UP ON THE WHEEL

I think it's just "natural selection"! But it's always unfortunate when an innocent bystander is caught up in someone elses stupidity!!! It's unfortunate in todays world when people feel the urgent need to respond, and get annoyed when they dont get an instant response.

I think cell phone use in cars by drivers needs to be illegal in Canada.

According the stats Dr. Phil presented on todays’ show:
9% of your attention is given to driving while texting…….the other 91% is taken by the process of ‘texting’ .

You are talking of unbalanced? I went to look at your profile only for the reasons that I wasn’t sure if I should laugh with you or cry.

Well 42 year old woman that named self Fartsalot with Skid Marks, do I give anything you have to say as credible. NOT!..lol

The response above is really uncalled for and I have no idea nor do I care to understand where it is coming from. It was rude. Clouding yourself with all the drama around your name does not give you permission to insult others.

All I am feeling is an overwhelming sadness reading your response again and am sure we all know what that feels like.

When I listen to new information, be it the news or Dr. Phil, The individual is secondary but does have an influence.

However I do understand he was probably presenting someone elses' study, but why people like him or even quote him I don't know.

Honestly I can't believe anyone would really attempt doing both at once.

Believe it! You just experienced it…let it be a new experience for you. Really it’s not about you, why take it as a personal insult?

Just a notion, reject it if you must, the coping skills you displayed in response to my post is learned. Just think, you’re children have adopted them as well. Scary thought huh? OR does anything matter to you anymore?

This thread is not about Doctor Phil being balanced or not. It is soooooooooo obvious that if you text and drive that most of your focus will be on texting.

Mixing texting and driving is dangerous stuff. I imagine it will become illegal - state by state - province by province.

I never text while driving, but anything we do that removes our focus from driving can be hazardous ... searching for a radio station, plugging in a CD, sex/foreplay, fixing make-up, driving while sleep-deprived or under the influence of drugs & not just alcohol, turning your head to check on the kids, searching with one hand for that bottle or toy that your baby has dropped while driving with the other, etc.

I frequently see drivers turning their heads to look at their passenger while in conversation instead of chatting while keeping their eyes on the road. This is what the driver was doing when his landscape truck plowed into the back of my car 'cause he didn't see that I had stopped for a red light, but it could very well have been caused by someone texting instead. Because of his negligence, I lost my job, 6-year relationship, lifestyle, suffered through pain like I never thought possible, needed surgery & spent the next three years in recovery working my way from wheelchair to walker to cane & eventually trained myself to get rid of the limp & walk without the cane. I have regained some of my athletic ability in the last 2 years but am not anywhere near what I was like prior to the MVA. My boys who were 14 & 17 at the time suffered the loss of an active mom during those years & had to help bathe/dress me & take over my chores for the first few months & after my surgery. The other driver? He got a higher insurance premium.

How many people drink hot coffee while driving? I've seen people at 'bucks or elsewhere ask for their coffee extra hot, then get into their car & drive off with their coffee in one hand. I know someone who spilled hot coffee on her thighs when the lid fell off & she ended up getting an ambulance ride to the hospital with severe burns. Luckily she had just left the drive-thru & was still in the parking lot, but imagine if this had happened in a steady stream of traffic. How could anyone maintain their focus on driving safely or even pulling over safely when hot coffee has just burned you?

There are an awful lot of people who eat while driving ... fast food, ice cream, etc. I'm guilty of doing this as well. Something spills on you & the instant reaction is to dig out tissue & clean it off or search for those fallen fries on the seat between your legs. Unless you have the common sense or ability to pull over, this requires taking your focus & probably your eyes off the road for a few seconds ... just long enough not to notice that the light has changed to red & pedestrians are now crossing the road, or that the car in front you has come to a sudden stop.

I hope MVAs & fatalities caused by texting while driving will be used educationally to prevent other senseless deaths.

Obviously you don't work in traffic or beside traffic or anywhere NEAR roads today. Today's drivers are more and more dangerous because of ,,,,,,changing stations, discs, tapes,,,,I-PODS, cels, makeup being put on, GPS units(OMG,,,,ever hear of a road map), DVD PLAYERS!!!! (in a freaking vehicle for FFS!!), face visors(that one is hilarious,,,and I don't care how "fair" your skin is),,,,basically NOT paying attention to what you are doing(um,,,,driving a weapon).

Driving,(ESPECIALLY in today's frantic pace) needs all of our undivided attention!!!! Keep driving the way most drive and,,,you'll die,,,or you'll kill. Either/or,,,you won't be feeling to well the next day.

I watched a driver(on his cel) this morning take a left turn into a roller blader(I- pod in his ear). I jumped out to make sure the blader was okay,,,but as soon as he pulled the ear plugs out, I called them both morons, jumped in the truck and drove away. Oh,,,,I had blasted my horn for a good 5 seconds as I watched the whole scene unfold in front of me. Both of these participants were "too busy" to notice,,ummmm,,,sweat flock all.

You know this should be obvious. You just cannot text and drive.

You should not really cross a busy intersection on foot when texting.

Also, it is really nice that cyclists have another lane on the Burrard Street Bridge but make them wear helmets and not listen to their Ipods. I suspect some cyclists text at traffic lights.

When we drive we or are using the streets, we are all interconnected, so it really is unfair to everyone if any of us are breaking the rules. We have big metal machines on the streets moving at tremendous speeds. Be cognizant of this.

use of cellphone while driving should be prohibited

I agree JS, there is no way a person can text and drive and pay 100% attention the the surrounding traffic. I have a family member who has a new baby and she calls me from her car when she is bored (stuck in traffic) and I refuse to talk to her. I tell her to call me when she gets herself and her baby safely at home.

I believe studies have shown that even just talking to someone on the phone, hands free or not, causes the problem too. So having some hands free device won't really matter

I think that even the hands free cell phone is a distraction, but hard to argue as having a chatterbox sitting in the passenger seat while you are driving is also a distraction, and how do we monitor this???

It scares the Bejeezus (sp??, lol) out of me when I see people trying to juggle their phones, a coffee and supposedly watching the road... Scary shyte. I really hope there is a new law that prohibits all of this. Too many people being killed by lack of watching the traffic closely! Save your texting for when you area at work (lol) at home or sitting on the public transit. Be safe everyone!

Thank you BE for your help in using quotes on my edit.. cleaver fella... xoxo hugz

You are welcome W~W.

I'm a "cleaver fellow"? Did I split someone in two?

So I just got back from a bicycle trip and encountered four boys riding their bicycles. They were aged 10-13???.

One of them was texting (riding sans helmet of course) as he was pedaling.

Please know there was no malice in my posted comment. People make typos all the time and some are funny, and we get ribbed about it.

I've made my share of typos, get teased about it just like every body else does, and have learned to laugh about it, and at myself.

Peace.

WW - No, no, no! Shake such notions off. We post for fun. If you do not choose to edit, that is fine. This is meant to be fun.

Unlike texting and driving which can be deadly, posting on POF is meant to be fun. Don't let the bottom feeders drag you down.

Actually, there are no bottom feeders here. However, some people are more rule bound than others. And like good little fish, we are all a little sensitive when people try to show us the correct path.

But as my old and odd friend Xav said, "There is no right way . . . only ways, ways and ways and other ways." "Dare to swim against the current, Grasshopper. For it is here, you will obtain wisdom and muscle cramps."
