I'm happy he'll be on at 10:30 my time so I can actually watch it and not force myself to stay up like his previous show. Posted: 5/29/2009 3:24:44 AM | When David Letterman had the old " Late Night " show after the " Tonight Show ", it was one of the best shows on TV. He was more grittier and riskier than he is now.
The best years of Johnny Carson were the 60's and 70's. Face it, the last 10 years Johnny pretty much phoned it in.
I find Jay Leno too bland and has become more bland over the years.
Craig Ferguson simply isn't funny enough, he needs better writers.
Conan does a lot of sight gag comedy and can be a little schizoid. I wonder if he'll end up toning down his act, like Letterman did, when he moves to the earlier time slot. | |

Since there are so many other venues where I can see celebrities giving canned interviews...why stay up until 11:30pm to see a monologue consisting of bad jokes...and a tepid interview of somebody pushing a book,TV show or movie?
Conan may well be the LAST host of the show...as it is rapidly losing relevance in today's society. | |

Posted: 5/29/2009 4:43:51 PM | I agree that Conan might lose views since he's pretty different, but he's exponentially funnier than Leno. He's easily my favorite late night talk show host. I have nothing against Leno. He's not bad. But a lot of his monologues are fairly one-dimensional. And to me, he never quite filled Carson's shoes. I never got past viewing him as "the fill-in guy while Johnny was on vacation."
I also agree that Letterman used to be great but hasn't really been good in a long time. The old Late Nite on NBC was great. And the first few years of the Late Show after moving to CBS were really good as well. But I haven't watched him regularly in well over 10 years now as it's become more of a chore to sit through most of his shows aside from the occassional oddity like the recent Joaquin Phoenix debacle. | |

Posted: 5/30/2009 2:55:41 AM | craig fergason is spontaneous. conan is a child. leno inherited johnny's audience and kept a broad based audience level. granted young people are taking over the world and late night tv, it doesn't mean us old folks have to like it or watch it....
thank god leno is moving to 10 pm us old timers can get to bed early and tivo fergason. | |

Posted: 5/30/2009 10:01:22 AM | Letterman used to be my favorite, but I lately had taken to switching back and forth between Letterman and Leno to find whatever seemed to catch my interest that night. I think Letterman's smart and can discuss just about any topic with any guest...maybe he's well prepared in advance by his staff, but nevertheless, it makes for interesting interviews rather than just ads for the guest's latest ventures. I'll miss Leno...I doubt that I'll be using the remote any longer.
My take on Connan is that his humor is based on "silly"...with Will Farrell as his first guest that seems to define his show in my opinion...I pretty much dislike slapstick humor. | |

It took a while, but Conan filled those shoes rather well. Some of Conan's best material was during the writer's strike. His feud with Colbert and Stewert was legendary. That's the kind of host they need for the 'Tonight Show.' | |

Posted: 5/30/2009 12:03:32 PM | I find Conan to be remarkably not funny. I simply cannot find much amusing or interesting about him or his TV presence. His physical mannerisms are annoying as his reliance on nonsensical physical attempts at humor. His interactions with his guests are stilted and uncomfortable at best. Leno may have put a lot of prep work into his show and scripted much, but at least it was humorous and comfortable.
I think he will fail miserably at the Tonight show. At best they are really replacing the Tonight show with Late Night. In essence, this is the end of the Tonight show and the long list of distinguished and funny hosts.
This move proves why NBC is in the ratings morass that they are. They took the one good thing that they had and ruined it.
I will tune in the first week to watch for the same reasons we all slow down to look at a car wreck........ I guess we are all curious to see the carnage. | |

Posted: 5/30/2009 1:06:04 PM | I hope that Conan doesn't get watered down switching to an earlier time slot. I thought the vibe and writers of the Tonight Show were terrible.
Glad to see Andy Richter coming back to the show. He's a good writer and works well with Conan on stage. I can't remember if Max is coming along? I miss the old skits of when they would do really embarassing things to him (ie. Max making love to himself).
Hopefully Conan brings the Masterbating Bear and Pimpbot 3000 to Burbank! I don't want to see Conan's humor tampered with!
Hopefully he drives away the older demographic (people complaining in this thread) and you're forced to watch the incredibly stale Letterman or watch pain dry - which is one in the same. | |
