Canned Refried Beans
Posted: 6/1/2009 4:34:48 PM
Last fall after getting a couple of food hampers I ended up with a dozen cans of Old El Paso Refried Beans. Other than making bean dip I really don't know what to do with them. The only other thread on the subject is how to make refried beans and not what to do with them afterward. Does anybody have any ideas?

refried beans are eaten as a side dish as mashed potatos or grits would be...

but its a great extender mixed with meat...

My all time favorite way to eat beans is breakfast tacos...soft warm flour tortialls filled with refried beans, thick cut bacon and shreaded melted chedar cheese...the flavors are a great mix.

We also like eating Tostadas...think of whole nachos...
most supermarkets have fried/baked corn tortilla rounds...the 7" size
smear on warm beans
shreaded chedar cheese
shreaded lettuce
top with diced tomato, onion, pickle, black olive, anything you like...

I like tacos of beans and pork...either shreaded pork meat or cooked ground pork sausage or Kiabasa.

the bean and meat can be in flour or corn tortillas and rolled and placed in a baking dish, top with caned enchilada sauce, then top with shreaded cheese and heat in oven till everything is hot and bubbly.

A typical evening meal for me is stir fry veggies - I don't eat much meat. A lot of times I'll drop globs of refried beans in with the stir fry long enough to brown the edges. That's how I get a lot of my protein.

Refried beans are almost as good as hummus as a sandwich spread for veggie sandwiches.

Well let me introduce you to a San Diego staple. LOL

A bean and cheese burrito. This classic must be eaten with a good mexican hot sauce. Here in San Diego, there is a mexican food joint on every corner and the best bang for your buck is the bean and cheese burrito.

Yeah, it's not fancy or exciting. Some might call it the poor mans food. I know that when I was struggling, I could get a huge bean and cheese for little over a buck. It filled the belly and was hearty.

About every school has this on their school lunch menu and yea, I had them in highschool too.

Of course you can add any kind of meat, chorizo and or sour cream to jazz it up.

Oh, quick tasty nachos, just take the beans and cheese and plop it on top of some tortilla chips. Throw some spatterings of sour cream and hot sauce on it. YUM..

Just a dam tasty poor mans staple.

Thanks for the replies so far. Yes,I know what refried beans are and how they're supposed to be eaten;I have eaten in many Mexican restaurants. I usually don't like them as is that much.
My first attempt has been to use them in chili in place of beans. It turned out very tasty, but I will say: make sure you're stocked up on the Beano.

1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion
2 cans refried beans
1 large can diced tomatoes
1 tsp oregano
2 heaping tablespoons chili powder(approx. I don't actually measure spices.)
Spices to taste.
and of course you can add just about anything, mushrooms, peppers, etc.

^^^^^^^^^^^Can I ask a question, why are you adding the canned beans?

Is what your making Chill con carne?

could add a tspn of cumin, garlic and as the beef starts to brown add 1-2 tablespoons
flour and chili powder

mix flour and chili in well then add diced tomato and fill can with water add...

mix all well and keep stiring till gravy forms...

lower heat and simmer till all is thick and hot...20- 30+ min
''
season with salt and pepper...check for seasoning

add whole pinto beans if you like...

They are good in a soup too. Just make up (or if you use canned, use that) a vegetable soup with cabbage , carrot, bell pepper, onion, garlic, celery, corn, tomatoes, peas, zucchini, broth of your choice, or bouillon cubes. Mind, none of these items is sacred to a vegetable soup. Let that cook if it's all fresh, then add the beans at some point and let it cook some more. If you're using canned, just mix them together and add some more broth or water (better with broth). Season with what sounds good to you at the moment--basil oregano, cumin, curry powder, seasoning salt -- all of them are good, just not all at the same time. Good with a sprinkle of romano cheese at serving time. No magic to it. It's just whatever you want to put in your soup, with or without meat, canned, frozen or fresh.
You can actually make cakes, candies and breads with them as well. Unfortunately my house isn't put back together post flood and I can't get to any of those recipes yet, but eventually I will.

Seems like you are looking for different ways to eat them..

Try toast refried beans with lots of bacon -tomato - cheese n whatever else you want.
or

Refried beans in casseroles

Your chili made with refried beans is different.

Add to Pasta..if you want... I wouldn't but you came up adding in the chili
