| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:19:25 AM | Just spotted pics of Jordan in the newsagent and overhead a conversation:
"My God isn't she thin, it's disgusting what she's doing to herself" "Yeah but she's just naturally thin, when you see her on telly she never stops eating McDonalds" "Oh yeah, my sister is like that she's sooooooo thin but no matter what she eats she can't put on weight poor thing, she's tried everything" "Yeah I have a friend like that, naturally thin, she hates it bless her"
If it's acceptable to be naturally thin and pity inducing to not be able to put weight on, why is it not acceptable to be naturally fat and pity inducing to not be able to lose weight?

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:25:46 AM | Because people are always gonna judge us whether we are fat, thin or otherwise!Dont ya just hate them people who can eat for England though and never put weight on! | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:26:53 AM | | Simply cos there's a social stigma against fat. Fat people are very generally seen as lazy, greedy etc etc whereas until recently being thin was actually seen as a positive thing. | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:30:21 AM | ^^^^^^^ yes Urban they should undergo rigorous testing to find out what happens to make them like that then make it and inject it into everyone, save a lot of money on treatment for medical conditions caused by obestity but then the huge diet industry would fail wouldn't it? We couldn't have that with some of the largest food production companies in the world owning them and some of the largest drug companies in the world making billions out of obestity.
That sort of testing would be far more beneficial in my opinion than say genetically engineering bloody sheep or whatever.
Look at people who don't get fat, look at people who don't get cancer inspite of smoking for 60 years and find out why not.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:36:15 AM | | Firecraka you make some very good points there!Yes why do some people not get fat despite eating a less than healthy diet and why do some not get illnesses related to smoking, drinking over eating etc.Could be some very interesting research done there. | |

why is it not acceptable to be naturally fat
Because being overweight is seen as a sign of not being 'in control' of your food intake & thus you are deemed as weak.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:44:30 AM | Hi, wouldnt have said its been any more socially acceptable than being large, I've lost count of the times remarks about my size/weight have been made.
It makes thin folk just as self concious as large folk, the god youve lost weight, or you need some meat on them bones, or the endless jokes of men prefer something to cuddle to, so I guess were all judged like it or not.
Now at the age of 40 Ive accepted my weight, who I am and the size I am, guess its about how you feel about yourself and stuff everyones elses critical comments.
Weve all got other lovely qualities that are more than skin deep, some folk just chose to see the outer and forget theres more to a person
good topic op xx | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:47:26 AM | there is a fat gene ....... i saw a program on tv ... i didn't watch it but it was on ...
thin women make my blood boil .... in a good way !
although those who aren't blessed with the thin gene seem to take offence at this .. it's just a preference like blonde, polish, thai, younger, older, same sex, no sex, weird sex etc etc

Agree with pinkgypsy. You've no idea how irritating it is to hear another 'you should eat more' or 'you're fading away to nothing'.... always said with one of those 'I feel so sorry for you' smiles.
Most of my friends and family are well overweight, so I hear it often. I've yet to tell any of them that they need to consider a diet or some exercise but for some reason they feel perfectly free to criticise me.

I'm fairly sure that there is only one gene - if the gene is switched on it means that you put on weight more easily than if the gene is switched off. It doesn't make you fat or thin, it just means that if it is switched on you have to work harder at controlling your weight.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:10:54 AM | i was just trying to be polite rather than saying fat people
fat is a word that is usually unwelcome in conversation ... which i can understand ... but have it as you will

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:21:50 AM | | yeah hear you there Minnx, its like when a certain store started selling smaller clothes for thinner folk, omg the national outcry, its promoting ill health blah blah, umm hello, did any thin person complain when stores for many years have sold larger clothes for the slightly bigger ladies or guys out there, it should be live and let live, no one is asking anyone to be the other person, buy smaller or larger etc, but guess its human nature to have something to get our teeth into and analyse or debate lol xx | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:22:26 AM | | Its all to do what society says looks good, is acceptable, is trendy. Thin is acceptable and trendy on models but not on real people in society. Society has crap taste on what looks good. I think models should be an average size. Then there wouldn't be such a stigma against people at either end of the scale. | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:27:08 AM | My younger sister went through hell as a teenager because of this... Back then the smallest off the peg size you could get was a size 8 and she was barely a size 4...
She'd get called Lucky Legs, Annie Rexic, Skinny Minnie... The list goes on...
She'd eat everything and anything but it got to the point that her school reported her condition to Social Services who ordered mum to take her to a nutritionist... She was weighed every month and was prescribed protein shakes to bulk her out.. Mum felt like a criminal and my sister felt like a freak...
Nothing happened and she remained below 7 stone at 5 foot 7 until she fell pregnant at the age of 26...
She's now a healthy 9 stone but can still stuff her face without putting an ounce on... Different kettle of cats with the red wine though... Heh heh!!
|
| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:27:12 AM | | msg 14, Ah yeah but then wouldnt everyone be striving to be that average size, then anyone either side of that wouldnt be happy, guess it would just add another size barrier would it not ;-) just a thought there x | |
|
| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:35:49 AM | I was naturally thin until I reached my late 30's. I could eat anything and never put on weight. I was so skinny that I used to envy those carrying 'a few extra pounds'.
I then changed to being natuarally fat, so can see things from both sides. In fact if you want to see me from both sides nowadays it's quite a walk!

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 4:13:22 AM | | You're always gonna get people who aren't happy but if you set average as average and not to the lower end of you're gonna get guys n girls that think anything above a 10 fat. They think 8 is average and 6 is slim. I'd rather have people striving to be a 12/14/16 than a size 6 | |

You've no idea how irritating it is to hear another 'you should eat more' or 'you're fading away to nothing'.... always said with one of those 'I feel so sorry for you' smiles. Hmm. I do sometimes say it as an oblique compliment - especially if it's someone who's been trying to lose weight. I would never say it meaning it as a criticism - nobody needs to be put down for their appearance.
|
| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 4:26:39 AM | | Yes your right there, some folk will never be content how they are, aided with outside influence and comments, although personally being a size 6-8 and 4ft 11 id not strive to be any other than my size lol as the average guide youve set out there as your opinion, would then put me at the other end of the scale and told to lose some ...guess its down to each individual to set the goals and sizes they are happy with.....and on that note im off to eat my pies lol xx | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 4:30:23 AM | I think people forget it works both ways. My school days were the worst of my life because I am 'naturally thin'. It's been the bain of my life. I was 7 1/2 stone and 5ft 7 when I fell pregnant with my first child and was constantly told I'd have problems carrying my baby because I was under weight etc etc. Funnily enough I had a perfect pregnancy and a perfectly health baby. Same again when I was carrying my twins.
2 years ago I managed to put some weight on and was a size 12-14. I felt great however it didn't last and i'm now a size 8 again. I can't stand being this weight but maybe thats because I've allowed all the negativity from others for all those years to get inside my head.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 4:32:28 AM | | Centuries ago, fat women were considered more desirable as their weight suggested they were rich enough to afford plenty of food. Today we know obesity hinders fertility and longevity. Also, junk food is cheap so fat is linked to poverty. Like it or not, thin is in in our era. Like other animals, humans have always chosen mates on the basis of who looks most likely to survive and pass on superior genetic material. | |
|
| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 4:54:44 AM | Id say large ladies or men are still as desirable to the opposite sex, many of my friends are larger ladies and never been classed as undesirable quite the opposite they look well, curvy, healthy and wear their clothes well, many cultures still desire larger ladies as their personal choice.
My sister is on the larger scale and wow nothings hindered her fertility or longevity i can assure you, so not sure where those stats come from, as are many of my mates large with large family numbers.
large or thin, isnt it down to how you shine as a person, looking good thin or large is just a factor, if you cant hold a decent conversation or show any personality i wouldnt think the size of a person matters at all x

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 5:15:33 AM | I think in real life rather than celebrity, bigger women are actually more accepted and more complimented.
I'm thin, but have little shape, sort of straight up and down kinda figure. There isn't a "complimentary term" for me and my shape, however the bigger woman has the option on here of being BBW (Big Beautiful Woman) with no option for smaller women to be "beautiful". There's also curvy, cuddly, bubbly, busty and many others that relate to the bigger woman.
I think there's a difference between "thin" and acceptable in today's celebrity world. Thin is thin, whereas celebrity thin is having all the right curves in all the right places, which very few of us in the real world actually have.
I think we should all just be happy with what we've got.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 5:19:41 AM | I've always been naturally thin and its hell, Im 5ft 1 and 6 stne, nothing helps me put weight on, didnt even put on any when i was pregnant. Te comments i get are harsh and unkind
