| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/5/2009 12:56:27 PM | | Last year I ended up going to las vegas for 8 days by myself. I would suggest this to anyone as I thoroughly enjoyed it! I did what i wants, when i wanted for 8 days. My OWN agenda.. I did everything from horseback riding, to the Roseanne Barr stand up comedy, to the Thunder From Down Under strippers(twice..haha). I got to know myself a little better, and truly had a great time and would do it again in a heart beat! | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/5/2009 1:21:19 PM | I've traveled alone. Once, back in my twenties. I went to Washington DC - toured the monuments, zoo, Smithsonian - was bored out of my MIND! I just had to have someone to talk to! A couple years ago I took my daughters to Myrtle Beach for a week - I floated in the lazy river or laid by the pool or on the beach while they participated in other activities - the solitude was magnificent! I guess it all depends on what you're doing and your state of mind at the time. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/5/2009 1:21:36 PM | I recommend doing everything alone, including traveling. You can go when you want, leave when you want and there's always people to meet if you feel like doing so, on the other hand if you don't want company you're good.
It's awesome to know you can just go whether someone else is with you or not, it's a different feeling of freedom.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/5/2009 2:52:47 PM | While I normally fly alone I am usually going to see someone in that destination.
However, next year I am going on a Big Cat Photography Safari Trip and while I am going with a guide and a small group, for the most part I will be traveling alone. While I am used to doing a lot of things by myself this is probably the biggest adventure I have embarked on. I have wanted to do this for a very long time and I just decide what the hell and booked it. I think if you want to do something, you should just do it. Don't wait.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/5/2009 3:20:59 PM | | Travelling alone is a great way to force you to go out and meet people. I find that when I'm travelling with a group of people, I tend to stay within that group. But when you're alone, what else are you going to do? | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/5/2009 5:13:33 PM | Gosh, I've been travelling alone since the mid 1990's. I'm not waiting for Prince Charming - I'd be too old & gray. Places I've been to by myself include: Belize (1997); Costa Rica (1999); Disney World (2000); Bahamas (2002); Holland (2003); England (2004); Africa (2006); New Mexico - Balloon Fest (2007); Barbados (2008); Galapagos Islands (2008). Life is just too darn short to wait on the sidelines. Most of my friends are either married or just plum broke. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/6/2009 5:12:35 PM | | I always travel alone. I just came back from a week in Vegas and I went alone. Although, I'd like to travel with someone who can keep up and has the same tastes as I do. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/7/2009 12:06:33 PM | I'd like to travel alone; if Las Vegas wasn't so expensive I'd go there.. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/8/2009 10:06:13 AM | I travelled alone, backpacking around the world for a year.
Do it. You set quality time aside for certain people, to get to know them, to treeat them, but the same thing happens when you do it for yourself. It is very satisfying to carve your own path, to be truly yourself in new company; and to discover who 'yourself' happens to become.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/9/2009 2:00:33 AM | I would guess that most of us who read/post on the "travel" forum would be solo travellers. I am constantly travelling the world by myself. Most of the time I think it is the best way to travel but sometimes, just sometimes, it is nice to share the experience. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/9/2009 11:49:48 AM | Well I guess it all depends on where you're going. Some places are much more condusive to flying solo!
I would strongly reccommend, however, that before getting really close to someone new, you take a trip together.
There is absolutley nothing like being stuck on vacation with someone who does not travel well. Some people can not handle the different surroundings, possibly rushing for planes, different food, etc.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/9/2009 5:12:20 PM | | I began doing some traveling on my own 30 years ago--a week in Paris. Over the years, I traveled alone a few times. Twenty years ago I lived in Gemany for a year and traveled around Europe on my own. In the past 7 years or so, I've lived outside the States and have traveled to over 20 countries, on my own, although a few times going to visit someone. At times it would be very nice to have a companion, but only to be with that person because I want to be with that person, not just to have a companion. I'd rather travel alone and do my own thing rather than travel with someone just so I'm not alone. Traveling alone has given me a lot of confidence in myself. I love to travel and traveling on your own can be adventurous and challenging which adds to the excitement and satisfaction of travel. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/10/2009 9:43:18 PM | I lived in Alaska for many years and loved every second.
I've walked on glaciers...
Hunted Bear 5 miles in the bush..
Camped next to a waterfall that was so breathtaking...
White water rafted the mighty Keni River..
Walked the trails of Denali National Park..
Got into Cage Fighting and had an 8-2 record..
Sat next to my campfire and listened to the wolves sing...
But to have all those wonderful experiences without someone to share them with, someone to laugh with, someone to support me, someone to remember them with.. makes me very sad.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/12/2009 2:36:25 AM | Traveling alone, especially on extended trips, is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. I do what I want when I want and not have to worry about whether someone else likes it or not. I can do short trips with groups or other people (maybe a weekend) but not long or extended trips. I've done a couple of extended cross-country trips with a couple of different ex-girlfriends over the years and each time come back home being at each other's throats LOL
Even when I'm traveling alone (unless I'm backpacking in the wilderness) I'm still going to meet people. Last year I spent a week in Belize scuba diving. I'm nowhere close to being a social butterfly or much of a talker but hell, I couldn't help but meet and hook up with people and party, etc. I had a blast! You have to remember, most people travel to see new things, have new experiences, get away from the same old daily rut and grind back home, etc. and are far more open to meeting new people and doing things (what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, etc. etc.) Just strike up a conversation. Some people may not give you the time of day but some will be a blast to be around.
Next trip I take out of the country I'll travel alone.
But I guarantee ya, I won't be lonely

But to have all those wonderful experiences without someone to share them with, someone to laugh with, someone to support me, someone to remember them with.. makes me very sad. Aren't the people on the same trip as you considered someone?

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/12/2009 12:29:31 PM | As many above say, I think holidaying alone can be very good.
The best compromise I've done is to go with a friend, but during the day we do our thing then meet up for dinner in the evening. Then go our own way at some point after during the nightlife phase.
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/14/2009 12:37:41 AM | | Done that many times. No matter where you go alone, you'll always meet new people. But it's always nice to have someone there with you. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/14/2009 12:54:50 AM | I love the concept of traveling alone.
Especially to foreign countries. Life is just... so real... when you can't speak the language and you're lost in the middle of a wonderful cosmopolitan city. It puts a whole new perspective on "What do I want to do now?" (Anything. Anything at all.)
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/18/2009 11:28:36 PM | I've been traveling alone all over the world, for months at a time and you always meet people that are going in your direction and like to hang with. you meet so many people and friends. I'm still friends with a big part of them and I'll stay in contact with them via faceb. So I may leave alone but in between I'm never lonely. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/22/2009 8:46:23 PM | | Traveling alone is underrated. I went to England and France on my own and I had a BLAST. Well except in Paris...I just don't care for Paris. | |
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/23/2009 4:00:10 AM | Traveling alone is as much fun as it is with your friends. You do when you want, where you want, you stay at a place for as much or as little as you want, then move to other place. No one is telling you that you need to do something.
I've done 2 trips last summer. One with my friends, and one by myself. I've seen Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, France, U.K. and Austria. I stayed extra in London, and in Berlin.
I like the idea, it's good. I personally do not like Las Vegas, but that is a question of taste. Anyways, good for you!
|
| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/23/2009 8:22:03 PM | I have never traveled alone. I like to bring friends or family along to share in the experience. International travel is on hold until I meet a great girl who wants to travel the world with me.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/23/2009 10:01:40 PM | ^^^^^you should start traveling the world.....and not wait .....^^^^
I have to say about 90% of my traveling is done alone. Last year I took about 40 flights I wanted to revisit alot of places again...I'm pretty chatty and never seem to have a problem meeting people. I've met people in other countries and have become friends. I never get lonely or bored....I have the curiosity of other cultures. Las Vegas is fun...there is alot to do in the surrounding areas for hiking and day tripping. I enjoy the drive from San Diego-Vegas...stopping off at Peggy Sue's for some old fashioned candy and a choc. malt or going to Calico to walk thru the ghost town, the outlet ctrs, the Roy Rogers museum was fun but, they have moved it back east. Stateline casinos, I'm easily distracted and entertained......

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/24/2009 2:25:25 PM | Allways a fan of camping but often finding it hard to find others with the same level of passion for it i quickly learned solo camping is great. then in my early 20's I started solo backpacking. Granted for safety sake not always best but on moderately traveled/well maintained trails(4-5 people at a site on weekend nights) it can be realtivly safe. I care safety gear and now days I plan on carrying a cell if i go back out. it is nice to be able to set your own pace and take your time or push your self. Granted a patenter dose help push your limits but I like testing my limits on my own.
As far as other traveling I normally travel with friends or family aside from a few car trips. There are advantages to both forums of travel. my uncle and aunt travel alot together and have a great (35yr) marriage but even they travel solo. Every Fall my uncle travels to backpack the smokies mountains and my aunt flies to visit one of our many family members.
traveling alone bottom line can be a great journey of self discovery and testing ones individual limits.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 6/25/2009 1:24:47 AM | how funny it is that people on a dating website, full of singles, are advising other people on said website to travel alone or the benefits of traveling alone. gee, what a surprise. i peeped other threads about the same subject as this one and that revelation just hit me. if i was in a relationship, i couldn't even imagine flying solo if i had the choice.
personally, i prefer to travel with someone for the company and to share the experience. but as a single man, if i gotta go solo, i won't hesitate to do it. just went to disneyquest a couple days ago by my lonesome cuz no one else was available to go with me. in retrospect, that was for the better cuz i was all over that joint. if i was with someone, they woulda slowed me down and i wouldn't have been able to do all the shit i did there. yet, i'm going back to a disney park with a friend this friday rather than solo. so, in my opinion, traveling alone could/should be decided on a case by case basis.
I recommend doing everything alone, including traveling.
