| | Do you give money to street beggers?Page 1 of 5 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) | Just curious as to how many people give money to street beggers (aka bums)...
I'd say that I do 50% of the time... only about a dollar or two, and it depends on how unfortunate they look.
How about ya'll? | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/8/2009 11:55:23 AM | No, for the simple fact there are some out there faking it begging for a living but i will buy them food. The "real" homeless people are appreciative. I'm happy to fill their tummies. | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 12:42:46 AM | | I've bought them food before. One time I saw one outside of wal-mart with a dog. I bought him some dog food and a few things for himself. But I'd be out begging with them if I gave every homeless person I saw money/food lol. | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 1:00:59 AM | | I will always help buy them what they may need (Food, bus fare, clothing). However, draw the line at giving them money, as I don't want to support drug/alcohol problems. | |

Just laying the gutter or a doorway - Yes
I've even gone out and bought some of them food while they were sleeping and just place it next to them.
Later, Bob | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 1:25:37 AM | I have, but not as often as i used to based on a couple of experiences.
Ive seen a lady/man work parking lots (walmart) asking for a dollar to buy their husband/wifes insulin perscription. I watched the lady get over 50.00 in an hour. I dont know how much the man got. But when they were done, they walked to the end of the parking lot and got into their (new model) cadillac. Probably off to the next parking lot.
There was another man who used to hand you a card saying he was def and asked for money, i saw him at a resturant in the south of the state and he could talk and hear just fine.
This is what finaly stopped it. Two girls once came to my house late at night and asked to barrow the phone, then some money. I didnt have much on me but i gave them what i had and went back to bed. They then smashed the window of my car and stole my SO's purse.

How about ya'll?
Sometimes I'll give out food if I have something extra on hand, but I don't usually give out money. I scarcely have enough to get by as it is.

I prefer to give to the local food bank. Where I shop, they have pre-packaged "meals" just for this purpose. You can purchase $5, $10 bags. Of course, you can give anything you like, but this way, I feel that I have helped a family receive a square meal.

He didnt look like a drunk, scammer, or cheat...he just look poor...
I made a left into the parking lot, went over and slip him some money...
Ive ask "abled Bodied" men to com do work at my or moms house...they refuse the offer...the dont have signs that read "will work for food" anymore...
|
| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 5:55:44 AM | No... It won't help them that much... And the little bit of "good feeling" you get will be gone the next time you go by and the same person is begging you for more.
You want to help the homeless? Get in your congressperson/legislator's backside about building treatment centers and hospitals to care for the mentally ill homeless. The bummy druggie and drunk homeless can go back to sponging off of their friends and relatives.
Real problems require REAL solutions.

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 6:25:40 AM | Yes, I do when I'm in the position to do so. Most of the time, though, I'm in my car and they're on another corner, or it would disrupt traffic to pull over or stop.
When I give something away, I do so with an open hand--I don't make judgments, I don't lecture--I decide to give, then let go. That's the real definition of 'giving', right?

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 8:33:22 AM | Whenever I can. When I see someone in that condition, whose life had deteriorated so badly that they are living on the streets, I feel only pity and compassion, irregardless of how they got there. It can happen to anyone, all it takes is a string of bad luck. And I dont care if they spend the money on PCP and whiskey. At least tthe misery is dulled for awhile. | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 8:37:55 AM | If I put anything in their cup, it's spare change floating around in my pocket. However if there is a food vendor close by, I have no problem going and buying them some food and bringing it back to them.
Once, when it was uber cold out, snow on the ground, etc. I saw a homeless man sleeping on a bench and he looked rather cold. I had a sleeping bag with me as we just got done with a big overnight rally so I unfolded my sleeping bag and put it over him. I figured he needed it more than I did.

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 8:51:19 AM | As a trucker I see them all the time, in many places some would not suspect people would live.
I've seen men, women, the elderly, men with their children, women with kids, and sometimes whole families. I always give money, not because it's easier to hand over cash than buy groceries, but because food does not provide shelter when your cold, or medicine when your sick.
I never could understand why people don't like to help others, I mean really, you can't take all your money with you to the grave, and yet people amass a fortune in their bank accounts..for what?
What is money best used for, if not to help hurting humanity? After learning what my Grandparents went through during the depression it changed my mind about the importance of compassion.
How many trips to the Bahamas does one need anyway? Only a small percentage of the homeless have a drug/alcohol addiction, I've volunteered at enough shelters to know the truth on the matter. People make excuses for being selfish.
You really don't see the heart-ache until you get out to the sticks of places like Alabama, Texas and Arkansas. There really are a lot of people in need beyond addictions.

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 9:22:40 AM | I used to. Growing up, homelessness was alway a very sympathetic issue for me. I think that not having a warm home and food is the most awful thing. I used to give a little bit of money to panhandlers I came across. I also used to volunteer at the soup kitchen. However, once I moved to Chicago, they were everywhere. I lost sympathy for most of them. There is just so many homeless people, and unfortunatly I decided not to give any of them money, otherwise I would feel guilty for the ones that I turn down. I would give them food every now and then, but surprisingly many of them would turn down the offer of food. I do feel heartache for them in the winter. It's was horrible seeing homeless people wrapped up in blankets freezing. | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 11:03:17 AM | | Sure, and I don't care what they spend it on...nor do I care how they got to being homeless and poor. Not every homeless person has made bad choices - not is everyone fortunate enough to have been born into a wealth of opportunities. | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 12:12:44 PM | | I might still, but lately I prefer to give my spare change to the suffering multimillionaire capitalist executives and stockholders whose fortunes have fallen farther than the government can bail them out. | |

| Do you give money to street beggers? Posted: 6/9/2009 12:41:40 PM | Yes, I give money to people I believe to be less fortunate. I sometimes wonder if I've just been ripped off but I don't judge. Sometimes it would take a week for these people to explain to me how they got where they are. They once were and may still be somebody's somebody. My cousin died of AIDS while chosing to live among the homeless. He could have returned home to family, warmth and a meal. But on the street he found acceptance, understanding, and unconditional love.
The following song sums it up pretty well.
Homeless (by Guy Clark)
Cardboard sign, old and bent, says "Friend for life -- 25 cents." When did this start makin sense? Man! It's really gettin cold. Sometimes I forget things and I get confused. I could still be workin but they refuse. Now I'm livin with the bums and the whores and the abused... Man! I hate gettin old!
(chorus) Homeless. Get away from here. Don't give em no money. They just spend it on beer. Homeless. Will work for food. You do anything that you gotta do when you're homeless.
Betty sings a song no one hears as the wind begins to freeze her tears. She says "Lord... it's been so many years..." but she's way past complainin. She signs a heart-felt melody, one that begs for harmony. Well... it's not what she thought it would be be... but, hey!, it could be rainin.
(chorus)
Ya know, life ain't easy. It takes work. It takes healin cuz you're gonna get hurt. You can lose your faith and lose your shirt. You can lose your way sometimes. You never really had control so sometimes you just gotta let it go and when the final line unfolds it don't always rhyme.
